Well, at least it isn't Barker.

That’s a bit surprising. All Saban era guys. I thought it might be Tyler Watts.

I would have liked Tyler Watts as well, but JPW isn't bad.

Gonna miss Savage.

I mean I obviously respect these guys but are they really broadcast booth types? JPW does a pretty good job on those short clips on al.com breaking down games but a color guy has to keep it upbeat and entertaining.

That was, literally, my exact thought as I read the OP.

Oh and I use the word "literally" in the literal sense.

Savage was excellent.

I’d often mute the tv to listen to Gold and Savage. Kind of a hassle to sync up the broadcasts though.

He will forever be known as the dummy that stepped on two of the most famous calls in Bamma history.

I thought his outbursts when Eli was making the famous calls was lame. I wonder if he got a good dressing down. I still don’t like to listen to Yeldon’s catch against LSU because of his “make a man miss” comment.

huh, I didn't know people were bothered by that. I always liked the "make a man miss" outburst. It added to the moment, a more natural, human element, especially considering how bland Eli can be on big calls/moments.

Me too considering how much more experience Tyler had as opposed to JPW. I'm sure having played for CNS helped him out some. I wonder if they gave them a game to watch and call as a preview to their ability to break it down as it happens, or was this just a straight up interview process and you're hired.

Played a decade in the league and now returns to his Alma Mater

Not bad for a runningback turned safety

I don't know if JPW is the best choice, but he's way better than Barker. I'm willing to give him a chance. That said, I almost never listen to games anymore since they're all on TV. I mostly just hear the radio guys during pre-game, youtube highlights, or the very rare game that I'm not watching on TV.

Glad to see Rashad Johnson back. He was one of my favorite players on those early Saban teams.

I just heard JPW on Jox, and I think he will be fine, even though he still sounds like a college frat kid

Really going to miss Savage. His knowledge and expertise regarding the game and player evaluations was outstanding to say the least. I would often turn down the TV and listen to his commentary especially during difficult games. His perspective was almost always spot on and way better than most TV color men.
Don't think JPW will be anywhere close to that.

Savage was brilliant. Used to always try to catch him when he gave interviews the week before a game. You could tell he had a lot of insight to our staff’s scouting reports.

I know a lot of people like Eli and he isn’t bad, but his call of 2nd & 26 was really lame. Best play in Alabama history and he rolled out a canned line with almost no enthusiasm. Not asking for Larry Munson but Sean McDonough was more excited than Eli.

Yeah, I like him, but that was a pretty crap call for such a huge moment. Imagine Chris Stewart in that moment. I'm in no hurry for Eli to retire, but I do think Stewart will be great (I'm assuming he's the definite heir. If he's not, the hiring person should be fired).
