Josh Pate was on the local radio today and said Bama is using the NIL/Portal the same as Ohio State. Paying the most money to guys on the roster to keep them and adding some additions/depth with the portal. Of course you have outliers, like Downs, but mainly you try to give the most money to the guys that are already here.

and the truth of the matter it is all the same: QB was not a scheme fit but he was a roster fit.

Based on McElroy's comments I wouldn't be so sure about the roster fit stuff.

I think that was a cultural issue rather than a player problem

That would have been a Saban cultural issue then. Moore cleaned up his act after that Vandy game. I saw a pretty discipline defense from that point on

Who’s Josh Pate?

Is he some internet Paul Finebaum?

He's an online college football analyst.

And again he's saying nice things that make a lot of sense about where we are.

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

He could mean either of two things.

1. There was no one on the team who could do what CKD's offense needed to be done to execute it

or

2. Jalen Milroe couldn't do the necessary things in CKD's offense and he wasn't changing QB's.

Either way, Pate is right. We were held hostage by the limitations of the QB position. Hopefully, those limitations no longer exist...

I would agree on both sides of the ball.

The rot set in post Sark with guys like Hall, Billingsley and the LB who was shipped off to TN after hitting a coach. We lost a ton of analysts and the elite assistants and staffers who had always been the glue behind the scenes had been gone for awhile.

I think Saban addressed that round of player issues, but without strong assistants and coordinators in an era of NIL/portal lack of structure led to a decline in culture and when the next group of rogue players came in there was nothing to keep it in check outside of a Herculean effort from Saban.

My hope is that the high level of roster churn we’re seeing is just the result of scheme change, poor evals and clearing out the bad elements from the locker room.

My concern is that the new staff lacks the structure to build a sustainable culture based on respect and excellence but honestly it remains to be seen if any coach is capable of enforcing reasonable levels of control on 85 guys playing on one year contracts.

This is why I keep saying that what Saban did for us from 2007 to 2023 could not be replicated in this environment. Fans should not adjust their expectations toward not demanding excellence but IMO they do need to adjust their expectations as to how we get there. The days of the large and in charge head coach ruling the landscape are gone.

Plus someone a while back actually spoke the words that "DeBoer was too focused on just trying to get the W." The thing is, you get enough W's you get to play for and win the big trophy. And if that's not the main reason for being here, what should be the main motivation for people, then I just don't know.

It's obvious they're not looking at your schedule when they see who's going to play for the big trophy. They're not looking at style points and how many asses you made quit. They're looking at the W's.

I've always been a "just win, baby" advocate because I've been a Raiders fan for 50 years and I revered Al Davis back in the day. Maybe that needs to be the main expectation. "Just win baby."

Nate Oats is the model IMO.

He didn’t fight the storm, he embraced it early.

That roster churns at 30-50% per year most years and he almost always ends up with a better output than the year before.

That would be my approach. You need easy to learn schemes that you can plug and play guys as needed and that they enjoy. Then you do continuous improvement from a roster standpoint with clear and objective expectations for play time (hard hat award, etc).

Finally you use analytics to determine relative player values and scheme fit and WHEN (not IF) the churn happens you’re using the NIL budget effectively and efficiently to ensure you have a championship roster most years.

Well said. Even better thought out.

Another thing is seeing hidden potential. If the coach can do that, he doesn't need a team full of 5 stars to win. I'm not suggesting building a team of 3 star guys, but if a coach can see the potential in a 3 star guy like Penix who almost nobody wanted out of high school, he hopefully can see the same things in the 5 star guys as well.

Pruitt offered Penix out of high school.
Kiffin offered him at FAU, too.
Willie Tagert at Oregon offered him but he got fired and replaced by Cristoball.
And then it was Rutgers, Toledo, Arizona, USF, and Indiana.

Just think if Kiffin had taken Penix to Ole Miss.

We need to pull a SEC starting caliber OT from the portal. Add a couple more prospects and maybe someone will step up. We don't have to have an All American...but just good, solid play would be nice.

I'm comfortable getting a good starting QB from our current 3 options...skill positions should be good, the defense had some key returns and should be very good. It's all about that OL in my mind.

The portal is basically closed unless one of the four playoff teams left loses a stud OT. I think we're going to be OK with Proctor and Formby. They certainly need to make some strides in the off-season, but the majority of the OT issues were firmly at Pritchett's feet. He was cosplaying as a turnstile the back half of the season.

Also, I find it hard to imagine a scenario where our OL doesn't look better across the board with more of a prototypical drop-back passing game and true running game. The whole Milroe experiment top to bottom was just bad for a lot of our personnel, the OL included. He backed into or rolled into so many sacks by being unwilling to step up in the pocket.
