Is this the end of the onside kick?

Easy solution: as soon as the ball hits the ground, no more fair catch.

The kick was kicked into the ground first. Fair catch sign gives the players a yard radius to make the catch.

Kinda hard to call for a fair catch if the ball is skipping across the ground.

Split second deal. Most I’ve seen are airborne for a short distance. The player has a right to go catch it.

I thought once the ball hit the ground, a player couldn't call for a fair catch, even if the ball popped up in the air after it hit the ground? Pretty sure that used to be the rule in college. Maybe the ball never hit the ground?

This team should never need to rely on an onside kick to win or lose a game. They do their jobs and they beat everyone by double digits. I don't understand the need to focus on this.

There was a rule change a few years back, allowing for a fair catch on an onside kick if the ball only took one bounce; this was to address everyone kicking the ball straight into the ground to get a huge hop on onside kicks. Here’s the rule:
“A fair catch of a free kick is a catch by a Team B player who has made a valid signal during an untouched free kick.” Additionally, the rule book states that “during a free kick, a player of the receiving team in position to receive the ball has the same kick-catch and fair-catch protection whether the ball is kicked directly off the tee or is immediately driven to the ground, strikes the ground once and goes into the air in the manner of the ball kicked directly off the tee.”

But the ball never hit the ground, it was kicked up 10 yards.

Kinda looked that way in real time, but the kicker kicked it directly into the ground causing it to bounce up high in the air…

Pop up kicks are blown dead once ball reaches head high in HS now . Pop up is when ball is driven in the turf to make it bounce up. You can still onside kick , it just has to be the squib variety. You can still pooch kick as well but everyone is taught to fair catch that usually
