Yep. I don't want to see Alabama travel to a place like Duke again.

fricking sucks....

No reason why we can't schedule a Syracuse, Iowa State, Illinois, Washington, UNLV, NC State, Cinci, UCONN, Wake, Maryland etc.

There are fans of Alabama who enjoy traveling fwiw as long as its one of the power conferences.

Alabama fans will travel anywhere. Heck, in 1990, we actually traveled to SW Louisiana (now Louisiana-Lafayette) to play a football game at their stadium.

We also traveled to Memphis to play the Tigers in 1991.

In 1978, Alabama's non-conference opponents were #10 Nebraska, #11 Missouri, #7 USC, Washington, and Virginia Tech.

This is true. And Washington and Mizzou were on the road.

But Virginia Tech was a crappy team. And we also only played a 6 game SEC schedule...with a total of only 11 games altogether. The 6 SEC games were against a pitiful Vandy and pretty bad Auburn, Miss. State, Tennessee, and Florida teams...and remember that Florida had never, ever, won an SEC championship. The only SEC team we played that was ranked when we played them was LSU. Besides LSU, the only SEC team on our schedule that was ranked at ANY point in the season was Auburn, who managed to get to #19 the third week in the season, only to lose to an unranked Miami and never be ranked again the rest of the year. You can't really compare schedules these days with 1978, because the rest of the SEC in 1978 was, for the most part, pretty bad.

Against a team like Florida Atlantic, will we even be able to assess how good anyone is? We routinely call teams like Boise and NIU overrated because they looked great against a nunch of nobodies and struggle with real competition. Would they same concept hold true with our QB battle.

It's definitely not just an Alabama thing, but that wouldn't be my point. I hope that these type games will be eliminated for everyone soon. If they want to keep scheduling them though, there should be no complaining when people hit the exits early especially when Saban gets mad when we score late. He shuts down the offense so that we only run up the middle and expects fans to sit there in the heat and watch.

agree ... more fans would stay if he let the 2nd stringers run the playbook ...

This would be nice but unfortunately it won't happen... I predict that by the start of the 3rd quarter, we will be running up the middle and turn it into a snooze-fest... Saban will then berate the fans for leaving early..

He needs to shut up about fans. He should be glad that fans even show up for that one. I wouldn't waste a dime on it.

Has he ever made comments about fans leaving early after cupcake games or just after some of our weaker SEC opponents?

Right.....

I dont get to go to a whole lot of Bama games. But when I do I make the most of it. I watch more intently in the second half of these games to see the young guys.
Pretty sure HaHa is the reason for the run of safeties playing star. Early in his career he was manned up on the slot and covering like a glove. HaHa would have been a pretty good corner.

But if you really watch the youngins you can pick up on future stars.

Plus there is a certain amount of class involved in not destroying a team and the potential for injury of both teams. If the twos ran the full offense we open the door for mistakes and those lead to injuries.

Why should Alabama go above and beyond in scheduling when no one else is? When things are equalized, and only power five teams can be scheduled, then more marquee OCC games will be on deck.

It's between them and Alabama's next opponent after them.

When was the contract signed for FAU, though? Howard had them in a bowl 5 or so years ago. Obviously weren't Top 25 material, but I bet they weren't tragic when we signed them.

I thought that was a unique road trip. Alabama got to play in Wallace Wade Stadium.

Then Alabama needs to stop scheduling the likes of FAU for its home openers.

While I agree with your sentiment, I don't know how practical it is at this time. Today, it's all 'bout the money...and the money comes from home games. That's why many go the way of the neutral opener...you can play a "Power 5" oppononent and get a payday, without having to commit to an away game next year (in a home and away series). If you look at most Power 5 teams' schedules, almost all have at least 7 home games (quite a few have 8) on their schedule. If they're playing that many home games, they're gonna have to look at schools outside the Power 5 to fill up their home schedule; most Power 5 teams won't agree, without an assurance of a home game for themselves next year, or due to the risk of a loss knockin' them out of contention too early. And most of the non-Power 5 schools that are willing to come to your house (and get stomped) are the poorer (both in finances and skill) teams looking for a payday and maybe exposure. Every now and then you'll see an upset (i.e., Ga Southern, App State, Jax State, North Dakota State, and Louisiana-Monroe) but it's the exception far more than the norm...

While I like how we've usually opened up most seasons with a quality opponent, like you, I long for the days where we had home and aways with USC, ND, Oklahoma, Penn State, Nebraska, etc. Would love to see a couple of those type games each season...but I'm afraid those days are long gone...

I think that the coaches do like these games for a few reasons. Unlike in the NFL, College teams don't have any exhibition games or joint-practices. So games like FAU give them a chance to work on things while also rewarding/preparing backups. IMO, there's no real incentive to schedule a bigtime OOC opponent outside of one game a year. That, combined with an SEC schedule, is enough to get you into the playoff if you do what you are supposed to do. The SEC schedule, especially in the West, is brutal so I don't mind us playing a few creampuffs.

I do think that if we continue to see these games on the schedule, then UA should really look at moving away from the neutral site games and play some of these big OOC on campus. Also, Saban has no right to get mad at the fans for leaving early if he's simply running out the clock in the 2nd half.

As for the Duke games, I think we had a handshake deal to play the return game in Bham, Atlanta, or Charlotte. When Cutcliffe was hired, he wanted that game at home, so we kind of got screwed. We should've gotten a basketball series out of that.
