It was Alabama against Fresno State, they should take from the defense what they want. It was more of the same. Quick, easy throws outside the hash marks. Would've preferred to see them actually work on the things he's deficient in since there wasn't a chance of losing.

14-18 for 128 yards simply will not cut it against the toughest teams on our schedule. The percentage is fantastic, the yardage putrid.

The blueprint to beat Bama with Hurts has been drawn: walk your safeties up in the box and take your chances playing man. One of the safeties is a spy on Jalen to keep him contained on the ground. Blitz like crazy and wreak havoc. It stops the ground game, contains Jalen scrambling and we won't make you pay for gambling with the receivers.

We had an opportunity to work on stuff yesterday against a completely overmatched opponent. We didn't do a good job of that. The offense went out there and went through the motions and turned in an ugly but sufficient performance. Bo is not the same Bb that ended the season. He finally started showing glimpses of it yesterday but he's not the wrecking ball with moves and speed he was. Not yet anyway. It's almost as if he flinches slightly from contact. I'm sure it's a mental thing for him but we sure need him 100%. Damien put in his usual workmanlike performance: little flash, lots of substance. Cam Sims emerged as a legit target for Hurts which is good. He had a very good game. Robert Foster is fast as hell. He showed his top gear on a reverse and on an overthrown ball in the end zone and that guy has wheels. We need to involve him more. Shitty game by the offensive line. Not enough push on runs and the pocket was too messy on most passes.
I was really disappointed in Jalen yesterday. He did take what the defense gave him which was usually an open running lane but passing, he didn't do much to improve his game. He had one great pass on the TD to Hentges. Fresno blitzed the outsider backer on that side and Hentges released right to the hole left by the vacated backer and it was easy pitch and catch for 6. Otherwise, we didn't emphasize the intermediate to long passing game, Jalen didn't scan the field much, locked onto his primary target too often and bailed out of the pocket too early and often.

I'm not bashing the kid. I like him. A lot. But there were a lot of coachable mistakes from week 1 against a good defense and I didn't see that a lot of coaching had occurred against a very overmatched defense yesterday. Same Jalen, same mistakes and opportunities. He IS the best we have at this point. But can't we coach him up to be a better decision maker? We have some great playmakers. Teach him how to find the open one and deliver the ball. Don't lock on to #3 and then take off if he's covered.

The coaching needs work too. The offense still has no identity. We don't have a go-to sequence when the shite hits the fan. Play calling is random and disjointed. We don't seem to call plays to set up others later. It's just a mish mash of random shots taken. Daboll sucks. I know it's early but he doesn't know what he's doing, at least calling plays. And running everything out of the shotgun isn't working. I miss the pistol, going under center, etc. that gave us more options of what to do. Defense was very sloppy but effective. A lot of youth on the field, and a lot of youthful mistakes and missed assignments. Thank goodness yesterday and next week aren't powerhouse opponents or we would pay dearly for some of the learning going on. I hate the mush rush and it didn't work yesterday if that was indeed the design. It appeared to be or else our front 4 got their asses whipped most of the day. We were more effective in influencing the play when we turned them loose the few times we did. Secondary kept everything in front of them and tried to limit YAC which they did well but we never tried to jump the route.

It was a very meh performance yesterday. The players weren't into it, the crowd wasn't into it. Hell, BDS sounded like there was a titanic croquet match going on and it was smashing to observe it. I'll take the easy W and be happy for it, but I don't think a lot was accomplished with it and the opportunity was there.

Cotton and Womack are average at best. A change would be nice. Wills may have earned the start but who else can play guard?
