Aaaaand we have reached the part where Stomp says that black neighborhoods have the lowest crime and the best schools and if you post a fact disputing his lies, you are racist.

Seriously, stomp, why not just work to help fix problems instead of lying? What the hell is wrong with you?

Almost everywhere I’ve lived since has been flat and I hate it. I want a place where I can see the mountains every day and would prefer to be within walking distance of some hiking areas.

Don't limit yourself to just Huntsville, then. The two highest points in Jefferson county are visible from my back porch, and both within probably 1000 yards away. Northeast Alabama is full of areas that have great mountain views.

ETA - I live just NE of Birmingham, but there are tons of places in the quadrant bounded (roughly) by I20 to the south and I65 to the west where you can find beautiful mountainous areas and be closer to good jobs than you are now.

I've actually been on the front lines working to make this community safe since the 1990s. And we've made a lot of damn good progress, including finally running out a derelict councilman and school board member who were just fine letting NW HSV rot while the rest of the city flourished. We pushed for not only improved infrastructure and increased development, new homes are being built, and a we've improved community/police relationships.

The area is much safer than it used to be. Is it crime free? No...no where is, regardless of what anyone believes. But I understand that perceptions last longer than realities. The tired, outdated idea of this area being disproportionately crime-riddled is just that...tired and outdated.

As far as the thread topic goes, I'd recommend checking out the subdivision off the south side of Shields Road, tucked under the hillside and close to Monte Sano. Very quiet, nice homes ~3k sq.ft.

Also there are nice newer subdivisions off Winchester close to the Walmart headed to New Market.

Welp. The whole damn city looks like it has high crime based on that neighborhood scout website. Maybe change of plans.

LOL!

All jokes aside, the city is fine.

Here are some areas of "crime ridden" NW HSV

That is admirable.

Yes. I actually would appreciate suggestions, as the area close to me is ignored by elected representatives who seem to only focus on their own micro neighborhoods, rather than the larger areas they represent.

There are numerous affluent neighborhoods in and around Huntsville.

It's a fast-track city well on its way to becoming the most populous area in the state. In land area, Huntsville ranks #1 in Al. Education and institutions of higher learning are unsurpassed in the state.. Mean incomes are the highest in the state as Huntsville has gained the reputation for being THE"SILICON VALLEY OF THE SOUTH!" Dentists do well here. Tell her welcome and jump in, the water is just fine!

Its so beautiful in the Fall. I love taking drives around the surrounding rural areas and taking in the scenery.

We also have so much more entertainment/social venues than ever before.

The more I look at the crime stats it appears Huntsville has a significant crime problem. Wow. Numbers are significantly higher than I would have ever expected.

It’s high in almost every category. What is the issue?

Those links compare Huntsville against a state average. Since Huntsville is one of the largest cities in the state, those numbers would skew higher. The key is to compare Huntsville's data with similar sized southern cities.

Thank you sir! It's not easy, let me tell you. But it's rewarding to see good things come from it. I love this city

There are no real large cities in Alabama, so violent crime probably should not be 3-4 times the National average.

It’s just very surprising that it’s so high. I’d have never expected it because all you hear are good things about the place. Most places I’ve lived you can avoid certain areas and be fine and I’d expect it to be the same in Huntsville, but the data online doesn’t really show that crime is localized and something you can avoid. I work for the govt and Huntsville has an abundance of jobs in my field. I’m just very concerned about the crime now and if I should move there.

i just scanned, briefly, at chattanoogas crime stats. chattanooga is basically higher, percentage wise. but they have about 20k less residents. heres what i'm getting at. are the high percentages skewed due to population. the less population, the higher the percentage, even tho the actual numbers are fairly low. they base it on per 100k in the population. so 22 murders per 100k in a 197k total population shows way higher than 50 per 100k in a 1 million total population. right?

i'm no mathematician, at all and ive never played one on tv. but hey, someone can correct me and let me know how bad wrong i am.

I was honestly surprised how much better that part of the city was looking last time I was in town visiting family. Whatever you guys are doing, keep it up.

I've heard of stories like this but the reality is the so-called "dregs" of society are pushed into another part of the county, etc. Until the roots of generational poverty and blight is addressed, it will still exist.

Why look at Huntsville data if you intend to live in one of the small towns to the east?
