I graduated from Grissom a...bit...after you did.

Grissom HS opened in 1968, due to Huntsville HS overflowing. Johnson HS opened not long after Grissom, due to Lee HS and Butler HS overflowing.

Wow! That’s half the city. What’s the East and west border of the area to avoid?
Obviously, I’m generalizing. Are there safe neighborhoods in north Huntsville? Of course. But it’s a well known fact that north of downtown on either side of 231/Memorial Parkway up to Drake Tech and A&M is the hood and rundown part of town. Anyone who says different is being politically correct.

quote:No, there's a lot of new development on the north side of Monte Sano off of 72 East, including one of my company's ;)
Just looking at it on a map I’d Have picked a spot as close to the foot of the mountains on the north east side of town near a land trust trail head. Is that a bad move?

That's pretty much a lie,
No. It's the truth. Includes the old school districts of Lee HS, butler HS, and johnson HS. Now, it's consolidated to Jamison and new Lee HS. Normal, AL is pretty much a couple hundred yards from north huntsville. Literally 1 red light away. I'm not insinuating anything.. it's just facts.. highest crime area of the city.

Huntsville grows more attractive as a place to live daily. I have family there and visit pretty regularly. Great schools, nice neighborhoods, etc. Good luck and congratulations to your daughter!!

It's a nice area. I don't know what kind of money you make, but you aren't going to find any steals in that area these days. If you're expecting typical Alabama prices, the Monte sano, five points, and historic districts over there might cause some sticker shock.

Generally in any growing metro, demand for desirable residential properties in-town and close-in (less commute) exceeds their limited supply, pushing their market value way up.

The prices are much higher than where I currently live in South Carolina.
I’m looking to downsize in Sq footage so that’s good, but it’s still high. A commute to work doesn’t bother me. My drive to work now is 38 miles one way.
I grew up in Piedmont Alabama and left in 86. Almost everywhere I’ve lived since has been flat and I hate it. I want a place where I can see the mountains every day and would prefer to be within walking distance of some hiking areas. It appears Monte Sano has more to offer than anywhere else is the only reason I’m targeting that area. If there are mountains and trails east of the city that would be fine with me. Gurly looks like it might be a good spot.

Take a look in the New Market area as well if you don't mind a bit of a commute.

My parents live in new market. Great area just out of town. Lots of growth lately...

Really pretty over there. Main problem is Winchester Rd., but they're slowly addressing it.

Just say you "dont like living around n****ers" and get it over with. No need for the circus performance of coding language

What's wrong with not wanting to live in an area where gangs regularly engage in violent criminal behavior?

I resent the statements being made about north Huntsville. I'm from North Huntsville and I have families living there. Not everything is hood or riddled with high crime rate. I really hate it when folks think they know lot of shite about area they haven't visit in 10 years.

It is inaccurate to categorize a larger area of a city as undesirable just because it includes some undesirable "hoods". There are some nice areas in north metro Huntsville. One of my son's ex-wife and children live in a nice neighborhood just south of Meridianville. My other son & his family live near New Market. I don't worry about their safety at all.

Exactly. I grew up there and crime hasn't been a big issue since the early 2000s. Not anymore than any other part of the city.
I mean there was a standoff that ended with the perpetrator being (rightfully) shot by HPD in Five Points last night.

Be honest... you've never actually visited any of these so called "gang infested" areas, have you?
Because if you did, you'd know better.
If gangs were really that big of a problem, why does the mayor keep getting re-elected by large margins?

I haven't lived in Huntsville since 1984. I've gone back a lot to see my two sons and their families who live near Harvest and Meridianville. But I haven't spent time checking out metro Hunstville. I didn't say gangs are a problem in any particular area of Huntsville -- because I don't know. All I meant is that, generally speaking, it seems reasonable to me for people to not want to live in a so-called "hood" where gangs or violent crimes are prevalent, regardless of the city it's in.
