If you perfer quiet area, Harvest, Merdinaville, South parkway are good spots to consider to live in area.

I work on Redstone Arsenal and I'll say this: Traffic are horrible between 7am and 8:30am, 11 to 1pm and 5pm to 6pm.

The only area of the state I’d consider. Smart, diverse people, good schools, decent amount of stuff to do, good restaurants, beautiful topography.

It’s totally different than the rest of Alabama, in the best way possible.

What kind of area are you looking for?

Honestly I’m clueless about Huntsville. I took a weekend trip a few months ago to check the place out. I’m hoping to land a job in the area and move around June.

I’d prefer something in/near the mountains, it could be east of the city I guess, but not a deal breaker. If I had to do it I would live west where it is flat, but definitely not my preference.

My kids are going to be in college when we move so things like school zones do not matter. I just want a safe area with low crime and a house I can afford in a nice area.

Any suggestions?

The area generally from Governor’s Drive north to Alabama A&M University. It’s well known to anybody familiar with Huntsville in the last 40 years that this area has more crime and lower property values. I will leave the rest to your imagination.

i have memories of huntsville. huntsville hospital and dr kendall black's office. many weeks in the hospital and many hours in dr black's office.

i only mention this because this thread led me to look up dr black to see how he was doing. sadly dr black passed away in 2019, a month before his 80th birthday. even after 50 some odd years, i still remember you with great respect. RIP Dr Kendall Black

Oh no, I remember his TV segments back in the day. RIP.

Huntsville is such a great area. It almost feels more like a TN area than AL.

I keep reading stay out of North Huntsville. Where do you consider North Huntsville? And why should it be avoided? I’m planning on moving there next summer and I know nothing about the area. Just looking at it on a map I’d Have picked a spot as close to the foot of the mountains on the north east side of town near a land trust trail head. Is that a bad move?

That's the area with the largest concentration of Black families. Thats what he's really trying to say...

Madison is congested. It sucks. Also, it seems to have higher concentration of auburn fans than other parts of the area.

I live in Hampton cove, east of huntsville. Great place! I always recommend folks move to madison to keep the congestion out of this side of town. LoL

That's pretty much a lie, first off Alabama A&M is located north of Huntsville in Normal, Alabama. Despite what you're trying to allude it's a low crime area.

West Huntsville has crime which is not near there. It's a small area of Bob Wallace, Jordan lane and Oakwood that you could consider medium crime areas.

I lived in Huntsville for 10 years, and know the place like the back of my hands. Owen's crossroads / Hampton cove is the best area up there on the other side of mountains still a small time feel but access to bigger city stuff. Madison is nice but it will soon out grow its boarders. Similar to what you see in Baldwin County cities.

My ex wife was born and raised in HSV from 1963 to 1982. Her mother still lives there. I have been to every nook and cranny, from Hazel Green to the Tennessee River, from Monte Sano to Madison. The area around the old J.O. Johnson HS is crime infested and everybody knows it. I know the city better than you do. Anybody who values their family’s safety would never live there.

Good to see another fellow Tiger alum. When did you graduate?

Born and raised in Huntsville and stayed through college, but plenty of other people have hit the nail on the head in terms of advice for OP so I'll refrain from adding what's already been said.

Born and raised in Huntsville and only left for college (Bama) so only 2.5 hours away. It has really grown into something great. Growing up I was looking forward to leaving as it was boring but it has really turned around the last 5-10 years.

The only negative is the amount of auburn fans here. The town is overrun with them.

Did you know a kid named Freddy Biel around that area. His dad was military and he probably went that direction as well.

Biel doesn't ring a bell.

German, pronounced Bill. He lived around Lacy Springs last I heard. Thanks anyway, your graduation made you a good candidate to ask.

I wouldn’t buy a house anywhere north of 565 until I got to Harvest, Meridianville or Winchester Rd around Buckhorn HS.

Wow! That’s half the city. What’s the East and west border of the area to avoid?

There are almost 300k people in the Huntsville 'burbs, and parts of the city itself are very livable. There's really only a small area not worth living in, relatively. You seem to want to be near the mountains. Just go east of the city to Gurley or further. Or southeast toward Owens Crossroads. If you go out far enough, houses and land are still pretty cheap and you're still only 20 minutes or less from Monte Sano.
