Having NIL type money and spending $3k of it for a pound isn't a big deal anywhere but the south. I'd say most habitual pot smokers have sold it at some point from adolescence to adulthood. So even if he was "distributing," which probably means hooking up a few buddies with a good deal, anyone on here saying this is some sort of moral lapse in character is pretty funny.

Everyone here in CA I've told about getting busted for a nugget of weed the size of a quarter in Birmingham looked at me horrified. Completely archaic way of doing things in Bama.

I’m with you on pretty much everything you said. He just doesn’t NEED to sell it though and he has to understand pennywise and pound(no pun intended) foolish. Even if he was in CA if he were selling it would be a felony because he isn’t licensed.

You’re probably right in that he was probably just selling here and there to friends, but that obviously fricked him over major if someone dimed him out. Making six figures and doing weed man side quests is wild.

I don’t think he did anything amoral aside from let his teammates down by doing dumb shite.

I’m no one to judge because I’ve done some incredibly dumb shite in my life and mostly lucked my way through it. But I never once had potentially millions of dollars that was contingent on me not doing dumb shite either.

For those of us that do not partake, give us an idea of what a pound of weed would look like, a bale of hay? (the small square kind, not the big rolls)

I mean, call me crazy, but I’d say committing a couple of felonies solely to make a little side money and letting down your team and the program that’s invested 100s of thousands of dollars into you and your game is a moral lapse. If nothing else, it’s vanity to think you are above the law.

Counterpoint:

You’re being paid half of million by your quasi-employer and it’s the most important god-damn week of the year

I’m sure I’ll be in the minority with my opinion, and I’m cool with that. But he needs to be kicked off the team and expelled from school. Any other regular student at UA would 100% be so why should he get preferential treatment?

The easier route is that we should just... stop prosecuting marijuana

I also agree with this. Until that day, people with a lot to lose should avoid dealing pot.

Or just don't break the law. It's pretty easy to not get arrested. I've managed to make it 41 years myself.

I contacted West Alabama law enforcement just in case. You can never believe what you see on the internet.

Selfishly I think he should get kicked off the team so that we can at least appear to have a culture of accountability. At some point it's less about the crime and more about just being an absolute moron. I could not care less about someone smoking pot, my college roommate's entire daily schedule revolved around cutting out room for weed breaks in between any activity he planned. But at some point, you just have to not put your entire well being at risk and that of those counting on you.

I can't believe Memphis didn't fire Penny. This news is almost as insane as ours.

Morality aside, the expectation of consequences given the established penalty in the jurisdiction he lives in makes it unforgivably dumb.

Holloway knew he was breaking the law and what he did was selfish and stupid. He's hurt the team not only now but likely next year as well, he has to go.

Jalil Bethea came to Alabama with some hype, time to live up to it.

He’s been removed from campus, whatever that means.
