From all accounts they made up and were very cordial with each other the last few years. I have a hard time believing Saban would have blackballed this Kiffin. Lane still has some renegade in him, but it is much toned down now and he’s much more into family life. Granted, it should have happened long before it did but it finally happened. And until someone comes up with a better idea, he still is the best name available IMHO.
Schumann has turned us down twice for DC. What makes you think he would want the head coaching job at the most pressure packed position in the NCAA? What makes you think he would be a good head coach with zero experience at it? As we learned during the Shula years, Alabama is not the place for on the job training for a head coach.

Friendly reminder about Kiffin: He lost to 4-8 Kentucky at home and to 5-5 Florida last year to miss the playoffs. He loses a game or two like those every year.

Best AD in my life time and I'm 41. Byrne hired according to the criteria set forth by majority of fan base: history of winning, exciting offense, etc. Deboer was the one the said yes. Deep down I bet Greg would be open to hire assistant coach but the boosters would oppose it. Ou hired Bob Stoops, who was dc at UF. OSU hired Ryan Day as oc first but hciw. Texas hired Sark who was oc at Bama. The best part of hiring an assistant is you don't have to bend over with the huge buyout, etc. b/c the leverage is not there.
12 downvotes to 2 up votes. People on this board just cannot handle truth. It’s sad really.
This is 100% accurate.

I think the hope is he grew up with a coach and then has only ever coached under Saban or Smart. The hope is he only knows one way. I’d go Schumann or John Sumrall

Two mediocre baseball hires and what appears to be a disastrous football hire. I'd still give him one more chance because of CNO and his track record at previous jobs, but it hasn't been great.

Nope.
I can name 2 better candidates that weren’t even considered.
Byrne went after Sark and 2 Pac12 coaches who were the hot names at the moment because they were in the CFP. It was lazy as hell.
On paper, who was better at that time that was a realistic candidate? Guy has been successful at every stop, coming off a national championship game appearance and was 2-0 against a guy that was one hurt Quinn Ewers away from being 2-0 vs Saban...

I know a guy who would have walked to Tuscaloosa to take the job who took a 5th-string running back and turned him into a pretty good QB and is the best QB coach in college football. But, he’s not gay so he’s a no-go, apparently.
Is he the same guy that, without Nick Saban presiding over him, got embarrassed by Kentucky (a team worse than Vandy) with Jackson Freaking Dart behind center? As well as an LSU team Milroe dominated?
If you want an upgrade from Deboer, Kiffin ain't that guy...
quote:
Nick Saban had an OC that took Jalen fricking Milroe to the CFP and won the SECCG against UGA.
Nick Saban, the greatest coach of all time, was also one play away from losing to a dog shite Auburn, Arkansas and A&M team that same season... and he had the luxury of Key, Amos, Downs, Latham, Turner, Arnold, Bond, Kool-Aid, Burton, etc. The cracks were already showing that year.

Another friendly reminder: he coaches at Ole fricking Miss— the University of fricking Miserable-arse Mississippi— perennial SEC bottom dweller, where he routinely puts out 10-win seasons.
The fact that you’re talking about the fricking MISSISSIPPI team he coaches just missing the playoffs is a testament to his coaching ability.
We lost to Vanderbilt.
Vanderbilt.
With one of the most talented roster in CFB.
By ANY objective measure, CLK is infinitely better than this cocksucking FCS frickwad we have, now.

No, he isn’t. There are numerous objective measures that DeBoer is better. Kiffin got left on the tarmac after coaching at the best program in the PAC 12, while DeBoer took a much worse program to the NC game. DeBoer is still 6-0 against Lanning, Sark, and Kirby.
DeBoer has never been fired, although that’s going to change. It’s ok to be frustrated with DeBoer, but let’s not just make stuff up.

Fit matters and right now I'm thinking Kiffin - despite it all - is closer to fitting in here than DeBoer having seen 14 games of DeBoer here.

People really underestimate how awful he was. The Nike contract alone is worth saying he’s the worst we’ve ever had.

But, you’re a fricking dumbass if you think Kiffin isn’t better and the best hire we could make.

Got beat by fricking Vanderbilt.
AND was ran off the field by his own player in the same game.

Personally I don’t think anyone blackballed him. But if we did, Bryne wouldn’t be the sole actor

Kiffin was coaching at USC which was fricking decimated by the NCAA before he got there.

And Kiffin got beat by Kentucky who was objectively worse than Vandy. They both blew golden opportunities to make the playoffs last season.

We will have to go through at least one more coach before kiffin would get a chance. None of the other stuff matters.

12 fricking years ago, while DeBoer was the OC at mighty Southern Illinois.
Might as well go back to 2007 when Les Miles was winning championships as Saban was losing to LAMO.

Let’s put it in perspective.
Kiffin’s Ole Miss team filled with mid talent (with the exception of Dart) lost to Kentucky.
Our resident FCS dipshit loser of a coach at the GOAT college football program at the tail end of the GOAT college football dynasty with one of- if not the most talented rosters in college football… lost to fricking Vanderbilt.
AND, in the same game, he had a player so undisciplined that he threw a tantrum on the field of play and when our resident FCS frickwad loser went out on the field to get him, the player ran him off the field.
What’s next on the list? Let’s see…
Our resident FCS dipshit loser at the GOAT college football program with unlimited resources and one of the most talented rosters in all of football went 9-4.
Kiffin at mid-tier Ole fricking Mississippi went 10-3 with 3-star talent.
He’s won, what, 3 Natty’s at 2 different schools as a Div-1 coordinator. The best offensive mind in our lifetime and the best QB coach in history.
It’s really not even a fair contest.
Kiffin is far superior to that trashy piece of FCS shite Byrne stuck us with.
