The FOG boosters need to step the frick up and help cover the excess to get this arena. Oats could be our GOAT if we really commit to our basketball program.

Byrne is the one who hired Oats in the first place.. a little respect is due.

And if he lets him walk out the door without doing everything in his power to keep him then he deserves to be fired.
Look if we break ground on a new arena and extend and raise Oats and he still decides to leave for a blue-blood job then fine. Nothing you can do about that.
But if he heads for greener pastures because we keep putting off building a new arena and treating the basketball program like a club sport then that's not doing his job.

Bill Battle pissed away enough income to pay for a new arena when he locked UA into a ridiculously low-$ long-term contract with Nike. Seems like Byrne could get us a huge donation for a sponsor's name being on the new arena.

So true

Agree we need a new arena, but it's somewhat irksome to see all the people who can't be bothered to show up to Coleman unless it's against UK or AU suddenly start lecturing the AD about supporting the basketball program.

We can blame Byrne all we want, but if he doesn't have the financial support he can't do it. I'd like to think our collective boosters are willing to step up and make it happen, but the reality is that 90% of UA fans would rather see another football title than a Bama final four. And with NIL collectives pulling more money out of boosters than before, most are having to choose which way to send their money. Byrne is going to have to get creative to make this happen.

Sick of this narrative. Give me a break.

Greg Byrne has been BATTLING to get a NEW ARENA and he's going to get it because he's RELENTLESS.
They can say whatever about Greg but he's going to put up a fight regardless of the odds against them.

There are several factors going into the increase in building costs. Material costs (steel, copper, lumber, oil) are up 70 to 80 pct. Labor costs are probably the biggest factor. Cant find skilled labor. Tariffs on imports have raised prices and created delays, along with covid. On top of that Bidens huge infrastructure bill, will put an even greater stress on labor and materials. Most expect construction costs to keep rising. Its just a big cluster.

That's the point. It ain't gonna get any cheaper. Citing inflation as a reason to delay what was approved a year ago is stupid. It's going to get more and more expensive the longer we wait.

This isn't a narrative based on BS. It's legit. Battle locked us up in 2013 with Nike until 2025 at about 5.5 million a year. Other schools are getting 10 million more a year.
We should be well over 20 million a year starting in 2025. That won't pay for the build, but it will certainly help.

Amazed to learn that Texas built their state of the art multi-purpose arena for “no cost” to the University!
It’ll seat 10000 for basketball but can be increased to 17000 if needed. What a great idea.
Greg Byrne better get to UT fast and take notes. No more excuses.

why just Fogs? Those of you who see it this way how much have you pledged to the new building? I am a side walker and agree a new smaller arena is in order but I dont plan on donating money.

Probably easily funded by mega-wealthy oil industry donor(s).

No, no boosters or taxpayers, funded by a company out of Los Angeles. University just leased them land. This company:
Oak View Group LLC, a Los Angeles-based company with a long track record of managing professional sports venues.

Our athletic department gets plenty enough money donated to it, we are one of the top 5 wealthiest athletic programs in college sports. It's time to spend some of that money on something aside from football. We all love Alabama football of course but we have a chance to be a top program in Bball now too, we definitely have the coach for it. There's literally no acceptable excuse for us not to build a new arena.

I dont know how donations work but I started an endowment where I attended and there was specific guidelines for how it was to be used. I assume people do the same thing at all big schools. Their athletic donation etc is ear marked for a specific building or sport, etc. And the University cant just unmark them. So you are saying money comes in to the Athletic department that is not ear marked and is enough to build the new arena tomorrow?
