….is one more guy who would have been a locker room problem the first time this new team faced adversity.

Im not saying they lack character by transferring, but this 30 day portal is a blessing in many ways. Saban had to spend all of the 2007 spring and season figuring out who really wanted to be in his program. DeBoer gets to find that out in 30 days. If this is not what you signed up for and you think there is greener grass, I’d rather you leave now than a year from now after your negativity has spread to others.

The 30 day coaching change portal is like Amazon’s “Pay to Quit” program where Bezos used to offer 5k once a year to any employee who would agree to quit to encourage anyone unhappy to move on.

Every last person who hit the portal can go kick fricking rocks. I understand guys like Blackshire leaving but other than that guys who had chances to start or were starting, we don't need filth like that on this team. I want real players to wear crimson not frauds.

The real crappy part if it is the guys who hit the portal before Saban retired because they didn't see a path to playing time. They sure as hell would have had playing time now.

That's not true.

I'd wager the majority of them love the school and have no issues with the new staff.

But, with Saban gone, the hyenas are circling the kill. The gloves are off and players are being contacted with packages north of 6 digits to play college ball.

It's more economic than anything.

That said, De Boer simply needs to weather the storm and compete this year. His staff is solid and things are in place to right the ship. I think Bama could be anywhere from 7-5 to 11-1 this year, but will bounce back in spades come 2025.

I don't think we need to call them "filth" but I also don't think Bama needs them. There will be some set backs for sure... But football is the ultimate team game and building a team is more long term than buying talent ( and the guys staying are plenty talented.. Just need a little depth to make it the full season)

I don’t feel that strongly, but I also don’t understand people who are having mental breakdowns over this. These kids transferring were going to leave at one point or another. They came here for Saban and Saban is gone. Instead we get to go into Spring practice with a team that has bought into this new system. A few more will leave afterwards due to the depth chart but at least we aren’t wasting time trying to build a culture in the Spring with 10-20% of players who were never going to place their trust in DeBoer anyways.

Yep, Downs and Bond were a problem faced with adversity.

Bond completely gave up with Alabama a play away from losing the Iron Bowl.

Downs brought down the defense after giving up 34 points to Texas. He could have been the best player on defense, oh wait he was.

Get this BS out of here.

We say that but now we’re begging for a WR and a CB out of the portal. So what’s the difference?

They were being offered money with or without Saban here. If Saban was the only reason they turned down the money then it seems like that is proving my point. They aren’t bad kids for taking the money but we need to know who isn’t committed now instead of during what will be a pivotal culture building year.

Did players commit to play just for Saban or Alabama. Looks like many were just loyal to Saban. Many not all

This may be a stupid question, but I don't know much about the portal. Would those guys be allowed to transfer back?

I'm thinking particularly about safety Jake Pope, who transferred to Georgia because he couldn't get on the field behind Downs and DeVonta Smith. If Downs transfers to Georgia, Pope won't be able to get on the field there either.

Downs

Was only here to play for Saban, and did it for less. Saban is gone now, so you might as well shut the frick up.

Bond

Was always only in it for the money. He's the only one of the transfers I will say this about. He's not a high character guy.

Also, you're an idiot.

Im not saying either of them are bad kids. They handled adversity this year because they believed in their coach and his program. I wish they did, but they don’t have faith in a post-Saban Alabama. That’s not the mentality we need at this critical juncture in the program. A bunch of 5 stars who don’t really want to be here is not going to win a championship. Texas A&M proved that.

Again, Im not saying transfers are low character or quitters. The difference is that anyone transferring here now is doing so because they believe in DeBoer and this program in a post-Saban world.

If they've only committed then sure I think they could come back. But if they've enrolled the portal is closed to them because now they're at a school who didn't lose their coach.

I think the respect for Saban and fear of his retribution staved off many of the offers, especially to top-tier talent and starters.

It's game on now with the new guy. Sharks smell blood in the water.

Bama has to break from a unified distribution or get in bed by encouraging others to sponsor players individually to retain the talent.

I'm not sure they want to open Pandora's box, though. And I agree with that, honestly. Take our lumps and build toward the future.

If you really wanna make lemonade out of lemons...I think this does several things:
1) Takes the immense pressure off of coaching staff. They arent expected to do much
2) Galvanizes the guys that stay and provides tons of motivation. Bama hasnt seriously been the season underdog in many many years and I think the players will eat it up
3) Huge selling point for DaBears first recruiting cycle that there is playing time to be earned at the best program in CFB
