Never really listened to him call a whole game. Just individual play calls

He is really not great as a play by play guy.

Does not give the yardage gained or down and distance enough.

Also missed a few calls. Has he just lost the fastball or always like this?

I used to like him but it’s a tough listen now. Really ever since Stabler left the team it’s not been a great listen.

Eli isn’t good. The only reason he still gets the job is because he’s been there forever.

Between him and Christ Stewart, it’s no contest. Time for Eli to shuffle off into retirement. Honestly should’ve been forced out after butchering 2nd & 26.

He's always been like this.

He rose to prominence as Motor Racing Network's lead guy calling NASCAR races and he was REALLY good at it but that's a whole different technique.

In a nascar race, each guy had one section of the track where they called the action and handed off to the next guy. There was no down and distance, field position, and the action was continuous. It went something like this:

"Gordon leads the pack off turn 4, Earnhardt looks low, Gordon blocks, EARNHART SWINGS OUT WIDE AS THEY HEAD OFF INTO 1"

Sounds exactly like Eli's

"Bryce takes the snap, gives to BRob, he swings right, nothing there SEES A HOLE AND CUTS IT BACK LEFT and down he goes"

During the 2nd and 26 game, they had one of those simultaneous broadcasts where you're watching a video feed and listening to Chizik and some other analysts as the game is going, without the broadcast audio. They cut away occasionally and showed Eli doing his broadcast in the pressbox.

He was using binoculars to watch the action and do the play by play.

How the hell anyone can do that, I don't understand. You can't see the whole field.

That may be why on one of the most iconic plays in Alabama history...George Teague's strip of Lamar Thomas...Eli called it a fumble. Maybe all he could do through his binoculars is follow Thomas down the sideline and suddenly Teague had the ball. As a broadcaster, how can you botch a call like that? And it was almost 30 years ago, so it wasn't because he was old.

He's just never been very good.

I was stuck in the car for 3 quarters today and never listened to him call a game. It was just bad.

He's not good. He's bad at the specific play by play stuff and he's not good at big calls.

He's just not good.

Both? Should’ve been forced to hand over the headset after 2nd and 26. That call was a disgrace.

Even before that, he first came to Birmingham to do Birmingham Bulls hockey back during the WHA days in the late seventies. His Wikipedia page doesn't even mention his time with the WHA Bulls. And he was actually good at hockey.

Never cared for his broadcasts. I’m probably in the minority.

I can’t believe he didn’t get canceled when he tried to bang the young temptress.

The quality of his commentary has dropped off considerably. There are plays where he will act like Bama did something great, and in reality we gained 2 yards.
