People don’t want to admit it but based on PFF the OL was actually fairly good at pass pro, it was just the run blocking that had collapsed historically.

So I actually think there’s a scenario where we have a worse OL than last year if the new tackles can’t handle pressure off the edge. In that scenario though I think Carroll would slide back outside again meaning we only have to find one starter level tackle to be functional to good again IMO in that regard.

I think we're making a lot of assumptions based on one scrimmage.

Yeah it takes time for things to work themselves out in camp. About that third going into fourth week things need to get smoother with guys more confident in executing and not thinking too much.

There’s a difference between saying there’s a scenario for something happening and predicting it will.

We lost an NFL 1st round LT and kicked our RT inside. It’s not exactly doom casting to say we have questions at tackle going into 2026.

If we aren’t better on the OL, DeBoer is going to have fans rolling guillotines up to the walk of champions by mid season.

So they better hope they get it fixed or it’s going to bad several years for him and family.

everything I've heard about the OL in the scrimmage suggests that against all odds they've found a way to get worse than they were last year

If this is actually the case come gameday I'll be finding a convenient bridge to jump off of. I'm willing to chalk the first scrimmage up to the OL being mostly new players with a new coach facing off against a fully-installed and experienced defensive front. DeBoer also made a comment that a lot of things that looked like they were the OL's fault weren't actually their fault, which tells me that the QBs probably weren't setting up their protection correctly. Let's hope we get all of that worked out during the rest of fall practice.

Well this is only if we start the pocket passing QB instead of the lighting in a bottle possible 1st pick talent one.

If he rolls out Mack and we have turbulence, then yeah he's going to be in trouble.

The reality it the OL doesn't figure it out by the end of camp, they gel during the season and gain momentum. Hopefully KDB does pander to sentiment and puts out the QB that can give us a chance to win it all.

Not going to get much more convenient than that Lurleen B Wallace bridge

Keep in mind that though the run blocking was poor last year, at least through the reg season the Alabama pass protection was #5 in the SEC in sacks per pass. So, it was above SEC average, at least statistically, in pass protection.

There were 2 NFL rookie starters on that line. There will probably be one more but he’s still at Alabama. There were also other issues than the OL that led to sacks such as RBs not picking up their man, sometimes they didn’t know who to get. (May have been the first OU game that RBs were responsible for 2 of the sacks for which the OL got blamed). Also, Ty sometimes held on to the ball too long.

That statement makes think the people at PFF were smoking a blunt when they came up with that. Formby was one of the worst OT's I've ever seen play the position at Bama and Proctor was at best erratic. Yes, he was obviously a first rounder but that was based on potential.

I'm hoping this scrimmage was a matter of growing pains for this O line and the result of going against a hopefully dominant D line. I suspect they'll get better. Just how much better is the question.

The rest of them were at least adequate pass protectors though. RT was just a turnstile unless Carroll was out there, in which case RG became the turnstile instead. We had 3-4 guys who could pass protect OK and maybe 1 who could run block. That's why they tried like 17 different combinations last year. As has been pointed out though, there is a distinct possibility that they don't get any better at run blocking and regress at pass protection due to inexperience.

Just one guesswork opinion, but I think a lot of the run blocking issue is just that our S&C program is great when it comes to presenting massive amounts of data in a positive way but fricking sucks at improving strength and conditioning. Ballou is basically a corporate VP of nothing whose primary skill is in making compelling power points that make his bosses think he's amazing.

I’m not going to panic about preseason scrimmage leaks. OL is a big concern though.

It is no stretch to say that dismal OL play ended Shula and Dubose. 2000 was one of the worst in school history. OL got progressively worse over Shula’s tenure.

Nothing gets this fanbase more worked up (in a bad way) than Alabama football getting dominated at the LOS.

I mean me, you and the coaches all agreed Formby wasn’t cutting it at RT which is why they had to try half the roster out there before they landed on moving Carroll outside and solidified the position eventually. I will be tracking Formby at A&M this year to see if it was him or us, but I think he probably could’ve been better at OG but likely didn’t want to play there.

As for PFF I agree they’re directional, but there aren’t 3 tackles in the country coaches would’ve traded for Kadyn last year regardless of him spending his offseason weight training at KFC.

The reality is he was talented enough to carry around 30 extra pounds and get away with it even if it meant he never reached his ceiling.

I sincerely hope that Lloyd ends up meeting or exceeding what we got from KP last year, I just need to see it to believe it given the fact that Lloyd despite all the dysfunction at RT never even got a look despite the traditional flight plan for young star tackles being RT -> LT -> NFL.

At least with Jaymes he has a full year of starts in the SEC and only allowed three sacks so hopefully we can get that or better from him this year.

I’ve been saying Ballou is a problem. People forget Sabans last 3 years we were trending down in toughness on the LOS.When Cochran left and Saban tried to go more sports science with our S&C that hurt us. I was pissed when DeBoer retained Ballou

Also, it sounds like the scrimmage plan was to make the QBs operate with a heavy box and a lot of pressure from different places. They were obviously trying to test the OL and that is a good sign. They’re not letting the offense play against base defense all camp. Apparently we want to play more man coverage on defense, so the offense is probably getting the rough end of defensive staff needing to figure out what they’ve got too.

I'm just saying that if Alabama can't field an adequate OL for another year, the fans here are going to get toxic.

I'm not saying that I will be throwing a brick through their window, I'm saying that some gump is going to throw a brick through their window.

Why the hell is this getting downvoted? It's the truth. We went from being the toughest and strongest to getting our shite pushed in in the trenches. That's not dooming, it's stating the fricking obvious.

We are not only team with injuries.

It doesn't matter who is training those players in off season. Injuries is likely happening no matter what each year.

So y'all wanted player to get stronger and Ballou got that done. Y'all want players to slim down, Ballou got it done. The off season training is no difference than any other team. They're tracking data and all that stuff. It's a physical game.

I think the S&C stuff is overblown. Our downfall at the LOS over the 2020s has been technical (coaching) less so strength.
