DeBoer is a good coach who did not do a good job this season. Losing to two 6-6 teams with the most talented roster in the country and missing a 12-team playoff does not meet the standard here. I hope CKD is successful here long-term, but what we saw in the Oklahoma and Vandy games ruined his first season and cannot happen going forward.

Again it’s a stretch to call this the most talented roster in the country unless you think arbitrary star ratings assigned by “experts” to get clicks from fans are gospel truth and incontrovertibly perfect.

The Vandy and Oklahoma games should not be considered acceptable by any standard. That being said, I don't think the sky is falling. I do think CKD can be a consistent 9-10 win a year coach which will be enough to keep him around for awhile, but won't make him super popular with the fanbase.

I’m on record here today as agreeing with you. I think we are capable of winning a NC with DeBoer but our fan base shouldn’t lower its expectations but it needs to understand that college football is a completely different universe right now than it was in the glory days with Saban and things can’t be done the same way.

Fans should lower their expectations compared to the height of Saban's dynasty. That won't happen again. However, fans should always expect to make the 12 team playoff. Every year. If you don't make the 12 team playoff, you're irrelevant and the season's a failure. That is a perfectly reasonable standard to hold the program to.

Saban’s first year at Alabama wasn’t great either

They walked into identical situations.

One other complaint I'd register about CKD's first year is how dissappointing the offense was. This is supposed to be his specialty. You can blame a lot of this on Milroe but CKD is the one who decided to stick with him. This side of the ball needs to be much better going forward.

I have said before that if we didn't make the playoff the season was a failure. I don't necessarily think that it was a failure but it really wasn't a big success either . Given this being his first year and that he inherited some real suitors I will give him 1 more year of not making it before I will say that. Maybe some comings and goings by way of the portal and some new incoming freshman will help him get his guys.

That presupposes that he thought any of the other quarterbacks could do any better and would not be just changing faces. I hope we get to see Ty in the bowl so we can accurately judge his capabilities when he’s “The Man” and not coming in for garbage time. If Milroe is back out there with DeBoer’s blessings then we have problems.

I personally think that it was a disappointment. I thought we had the talent to lose no more than 1 or 2 games, and I was pretty optimistic about DeBoer as an offensive coach. After the UGA game I was even more optimistic. Then we showed up to Nashville not prepared at all and got smacked. That should not have happened. Not acceptable. I didn't think that Milroe would regress as a passer under DeBoer, and certainly not as much as he did. But yeah, he pretty much single handedly lost the UT game. And then we go to Norman totally unprepared, again, with everything set up perfectly for us to cruise into the playoff. Getting whooped by a bad team in that scenario is completely unacceptable. No other way to slice it.
I still like DeBoer, and I like the recruiting class, I'm hopeful for the future, but the 2024 season was a bust. I think that having a more consistent, and more capable QB will fix a lot of things, and I think that there is at least 1 of those on the roster for 2025.

DeBoer’s problem this year was not being familiar with the weekly grind of an SEC schedule. Game prep for every team has to be done before and during the season. That’s why Saban invented the analysts concept.
Many times when playing new coaches and unusual offensive/defensive schemes there is not enough time during a week to coach up your players. We ran into this problem with Vanderbilt, and Oklahoma literally copy pasted their scheme. Even Saban ran into such problems before course correcting.
Let’s see if DeBoer learns anything from this year.

Easy to say. Saban was prepping for Chattanooga before barn last year.
DeBoer had to go on the road to Norman.
Saban never had to prepare for a conference game before barn. Ever.

I said in another thread that the biggest thing he needs to understand is that there are no gimmes, ever, even with the supposed doormats and especially on the road, in the SEC, period. You’ve got to get it up 8 times in this league, end of discussion.

C-
Team was very undisciplined and unfocused. See number of penalties and losses to inferior teams. Can’t just show other your jerseys and expect them to concede. Also couldn’t find a way to play to #4’s strengths.
Beat UGA, Auburn, and blew out LSU. Defense seemed improved. Recruiting seems ok but who knows exactly what that means with the portal. Higher ranked still better though.

I was underwhelmed. His staff seemed unable to make game time adjustments. They showed up woefully unprepared against multiple teams. I don't think the team improved throughout the season. I don't buy into this first year crap...he's supposed to have the skills to walk in and run this place. He just seemed to come in and try to maintain status quo ala Shula... And that doesn't go so well. What can we point to and say, CKD put his mark here on the program? I can't think of anything off hand.

CKD 's mark on the program is that it is worse off then it was at this point last year.
