I get it is supposed to be to make teams take Mid range but my god for Good Guards idc what the analytics say it’s a good shot for the opposing team

I have no issue with it as a base system, but there are times in games against teams that match up against it well where they get in a locked in rhythm of beating it and getting good shots everytime down the floor. You have to throw something else at them (trap the screen, zone, 3/4 court pressure) to snap them out of their comfort zone at least for 2-3 possessions.

That's my thought too. And to be fair, Oats did change it up at around the 3-ish minute mark timeout and it got a stop or two that swung that game the good guy's way.

We were short handed. I got to imagine that drop coverage on screen actions was about keeping our guards out of foul trouble. Regrettably, Philon took some risks in the open court last night that still got him in foul trouble and I think that is why Clemson got back into the game. They didn't have an answer for him on the dribble drive. Philon didn't make all his shots but he was getting good ones all game. When he was sitting, the wheels fell off in the 2nd half.

They got some very fortunate bounces; I'm fine with one-footed floaters from the free throw line. Those aren't going to be sustainable over 40 minutes.

It's the post defense that's a problem. We did a good job at times digging the post guys on the catch to force a pass, but we have to be much better there, because our guys can't be left on an island with the TKRs and RJ Godreys of the world.

I can remember a LOT of coaches wasting timeouts to try to stop runs to no avail. I'll guarantee you Oats has crunched the numbers and made a conscious decision on how he handles those situations

You're probably right. But I'm still gonna bitch about it. Seeing a team with full momentum eat at our lead is so damn painful to watch.

Especially if you know you are gonna get that shot. A floater that opens up spontaneously is a lot different than one that you’re specifically counting on

Thought I posted this last night but that was the most Avery Johnson game of the Nate Oats era

Buuuuuuuut it’s a Quad 1 win with essentially 4 guys in the Top 8 out so I don’t really care

My 1 gripe with Nate.(other than his TO usage) is he doesn’t adjust his defense and stubbornly sticks with it. And that goes back to his first game vs Penn where they just beat us to death with the same action over and over again. It’s nitpicking I know but it drives me insane.

I love Nate by the way he is our GOAT basketball coach

Clemson seems to be a good team. They hadn't really played anyone leading up to last night, and I think they go a little overwhelmed in that first half, but they calmly and collectively clawed back.

it’s a good thing even on Nate’s tough nights that the gap is still very, very wide between him and Avery.

I’d be pretty shocked if Clemson finishes as a Q1 win for us. Highly likely it will be Q2. Heck, LSU is currently top 20 in Net, and they will likely end in the 45-75 range.

I realize this game was a frustrating one, but the biggest takeaway from this game should be that Aiden Sherrell is finding his groove defensively. The biggest question mark for this team was rim protection, and Sherrell (seemingly out of nowhere) evolving into an excellent shot blocker is absolutely massive to this team's upside.

Yep. It's very much a work in progress, but when and if everyone is healthy I think we will eventually have a pretty good defense. Not elite, but good, which is plenty with our offense.
