I read that and always laugh at it a little because it shows how little Ohio State people think of everyone else's culture. I am always like just because he is an "Ohio State type kid", whatever that means, doesn't mean he isn't a "Alabama or UGA" type kid either. I respect the top Ohio State recruiting guys but I feel they have a blind spot with that sometimes. Bama and UGA get plenty of Ohio State targets that fit into "the brotherhood".

I could see people thinking that for sure; I choose (key word here) to believe it is just hyping up OSU's culture and not talking down to others. The top insider for me at OSU is Birm who always says "if Alabama is recruiting him, it is a tough win". I think that is probably mutual for a lot of kids who are top kids (along with UGA kind of as you said)

Larry Johnson who is outstanding

This is true.

Jim Knowles was a good addition as well. Unlike Mattison and Coombs, he actually understands the defensive scheme can change for the opponent and maybe should change at times during the game.

Alabama High School Football: Defensive spotlight

quote:

JAQUAVIOUS RUSSAW

The highly touted defensive end has been flying all over the field throughout Carver's 2-0 start to the season. The four-star notched six tackles and two tackles for loss against Daphne and tallied two sacks against Park Crossing. The Rivals250 product has a top six that includes Auburn, Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Florida, and Alabama State. He plans to be back at Auburn Sept. 17th for the Penn State game, alongside teammate James Smith.

TOMARRION PARKER

The former Penn State commit leads the state of Alabama with 7.5 sacks so far this season. Five of those came in impressive fashion against Hewitt-Trussville in the season opener. The talented four-star has three fall officials planned to Tennessee, Florida, and Clemson.

He's going to finish the season with 30 sacks at this rate.

YHONZAE PIERRE

Eufala is off to a 3-0 start and the Alabama commitment is a big reason why. The Rivals250 talent has collected 10 tackles, four tackles for loss, three sacks, and forced two fumbles so far this season. Pierre has also returned a fumble for a touchdown and caught a touchdown on offense.

JAHLIL HURLEY

In the era of big corners, Hurley stands tall. Hurley is that smooth cover corner with quick hips and a burst that helped him shadow 7A receivers a year ago to the tune of five picks. His Florence High School squad has used Hurley as a free safety at times this season utilizing his speed and knowledge of the game to help stop opposing rushing attacks.

Alabama got the four-star in-state talent to stay home for college on Feb. 2.

TONY MITCHELL

Coming off a 7A state championship, the spotlight is on Thompson High School again in 2023. The Warriors got great contributions from their four-star last season watching him tally 55 tackles, four tackles for loss, with two picks, and an eye popping 11 passes broken up. Mitchell is turning up the heat during his last ride with 17 stops, two tackles for a loss, and three pass breakups already on the stat sheet.

The Crimson Tide closed on the speedy corner on June 26.

JAYLEN MBAKWE

When it comes to a dynamic playmaker on the field, Clay-Chalkville has one in Mbakwe. The 2024 athlete was critical in the Cougars run to a 6A state championship last fall hauling in 36 passes for 677 yards with nine touchdowns. The speed shinned on special teams taking 28 punts for 330 yards and 11 kicks for 167. With all that he can do on offense and in the return game, Mbakwe’s future may be heading to a collegiate secondary. The four-star had two picks last season. The explosiveness in his game has returned carrying a 29.8 yard per catch average covering 268 yards off nine receptions with three touchdowns in three games this season.

That proverbial recruiting fence built around the state of Alabama stands strong for the Crimson Tide. Nick Saban and staff picked up Mbakwe’s pledge on July 26.

Not sure you asking about Perkins or the article as a whole, but the long and short of it is Perkins is probably sticking with Ole Miss when this is all said and done (he really liked the attention with the flip stuff and Bama is his "dream school" ) which has felt obvious for awhile. The Bama analyst don't want to close the door on it but Carlton says a Mississippi recruit taking this long means you can move on. Also says they are unaware of any other current inside linebacker offers.

98% of Mississippi recruits fall into two categories. They either commit out of state early and flip late or they are heading out of state until there's a knock on the door and a duffel bag full of cash appears on the porch ~8 hours before signing. The other 2% of the time the kid realizes that he can just take the cash and go elsewhere, because what are they going to do? Turn him in for taking their money and not signing?

At the risk of sounding like I am making light of what is happening in Jackson at the moment, there really is something in the water in that state that just draws people back to it. I don't really get it. Mississippi seems to be the one state that has been largely immune to an increasingly national recruiting culture.

This is from an OSU insider who spoke to the father of a number of top players (I'm not sure who has that many kids who are being recruited by Bama and OSU so my bet is it is Uiagalelei but not for sure) at the OSU game who compared Bama and OSU in the NIL era and how they "pitch" kids on visits. Figured you would find it interesting

quote:

He said when they went to Ohio State it was a pretty well rounded pitch that included a 2 1/2 hour meeting on an academic plan and a discussion that included sample class schedules, syllabus, and course outlines for his kid's areas of interest. They also met with representatives of the particular department they would be studying in---as well as the head of the academic mentoring program.

The discussion about NIL was really "forward looking" and spoke about future opportunities for his sons were they to head to the Buckeyes. Talked a lot about the size of deals in the recent past and how those might translate to deals for his sons once they hit the campus.

He said it couldn't have been more different at Alabama. He said the academic pitch was about 30 minutes and mainly talked about class schedule and how it would co-exist with the demands of the football team.

Said the discussion about NIL was about potential offers they could see "right then, right now"---and what other players had gotten before, during and after their tenure at Alabama.

Said the main difference was "At Alabama---its ALL about football--developing your son---winning NC's--getting to the league. And getting paid via NIL in the mean time. Period. End. Not saying it was better or worse, but it couldn't have been more different"

Seems to conflict with what a recent recruit had to say about his experience:

quote:

KingJoseph Edwards, 2024 four-star athlete from Buford High School in Georgia, visited Alabama on Wednesday. It was his first visit to Tuscaloosa after receiving an offer from the University of Alabama last month. He sat down with Alabama head coach Nick Saban to learn more about the success of the Alabama program.

"Bama is all that I've heard- prestigious, thorough," Edwards said. "Coach Saban really focused on academics and how the players at Bama are academically successful. They have something like an 85% graduation rate amongst the athletes. That’s excellent considering some don’t graduate because they go to the league. So essentially their graduation rate would be higher.

“He told me to focus on my future after football because eventually football will be finished. He spoke about building good relationships in life so when I graduate if I decide to work for someone else it’ll be easier to get a job and keep it."

"They are in my top three (with Georgia and Ohio State). What stood out was the academic program. From what Coach Saban pointed out to me it’s impeccable. At this point the programs interested in me are top-of-the line. It’s getting harder for me to make decisions. The good thing is I have plenty of time to decide."

You can read the rest here

ETA: Recruiting pitches are tailored to specific athletes interests/desires, so while the general recruiting pitch may be, "Hey, we're Bama, we win championships and get people drafted" the entire recruiting process and strategy is a lot more complicated.

Not really cause there isn't any context. The schedule and presentation is going to change based on what kind of visit, when they came and how long they were on campus. This is pre NIL but I know Deans of some colleges at UA who have spent significant amounts of time with recruits discussing their academic programs on visits. Which OSU Insider was it?

By the way, from what I heard that doesn't sound like Mataeyo's dad at all . It is either Innis, Thurman, maybe Wilson (these are the only 3 at ND I believe who have taken official's to both). I'm not sure Keeley's or Wilson's people talk that much though.

With that being said I don't mean to be dismissive, thanks for sharing.

The next time I'm recruited by a national-level university will be the first, so I have no inside view on this. Having said that, this doesn't jibe at all with what we've heard from multiple recruits, players, and coaches for more than a decade.

From what I understand, Saban (and the rest of the support staff) place a HUGE emphasis on equipping players to succeed in life, not just in football. Alabama has hosted a who's-who of nationally recognized motivational and life-experience speakers over the years. Heck, earlier this week the Today Show did a five-minute segment on how Alabama helps players deal with mental stress.

I'm sure the recruiting pitch would be tailored to suit a particular player's interests, but I find it hard to believe it's as single-minded (especially on NIL) as that quote would suggest.
