Jayson Jones opens up about his Alabama commitment

quote:

Alabama is off to a very strong start in 2020 and their latest commitment has come from Rivals250 defensive tackle Jayson Jones.

The monster out of Calera (Ala.) committed to Alabama over Georgia.

fricking Rivals and their Alabama hate. Jones is ranked #97 overall in their rankings, yet Simmons refers to him as a Rivals250 player and not a Rivals100 one.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

"I still remember when I got the Alabama offer on December 6," said Jones. "It meant a lot. I have grown up in an Alabama household, I have always watched Alabama and I was a big Alabama fan, so getting the offer was something important to me.

"Before the offer came, I had visited Alabama probably four or five times. Alabama was my fourth offer, but it was a very big one.

"I actually committed to Alabama and told them I was coming was January 26. It was on a Junior Day. My parents thought I just got caught up in the moment, but I told them that Alabama was where I wanted to be.

"I already feel very comfortable with the school and the people there. I knew that day that Alabama was where I wanted to be. There was no reason to wait.

"I already have bonded with some of the team and many of the coaches. I am close with coach Key and coach Saban. Coach Saban knows my dad from years ago, so there is a strong connection there.

"It was very hard to keep my commitment quiet this long. So many people have been asking me where I am going. I told me family and a few very close friends, but I have have kept everyone else waiting.

"It is kind of a strange feeling now to let my commitment out. It is exciting to call myself an Alabama commitment.

"Georgia was in it at first, but they did not communicate with me the same as Alabama. Since commitment silently to Alabama, the communication has been great. I have still been bonding with coach Key and I am talking to coach Kuligowski and coach Lupoi now too.

"This is like a dream come true for me. My dad has been a huge fan for the longest and my mom has been a big Alabama fan for the last 10 years or so, so it is huge for the family.

"I will be paying a lot closer attention this season to the team and how they play. Coach Kuligowski says I will be the guy to replace Raekwon Davis, so I will be watching what he does closely.

"Being able to talk about being an Alabama commitment now means a lot. I have known for a long time that I would love to go there and now I have the opportunity.

RIVALS REACTION

Jones has worked hard this off-season and dropped around 35 pounds. He is in great shape and he plans to have a big junior season as an Alabama commitment. Jones does still plan to take other visits and to communicate with other schools, but he is going to be very tough to pull away from the Crimson Tide if they continue to recruit him the way they have for the last six months. He is a big defensive lineman with power and if he controls his weight like he has been, he will only be quicker and better.

STOCK DOWN

quote:

Harrison Bailey

Bailey had a pretty rough start to the day. His reaction time and quickness weren’t what we’ve come to expect from him. Granted, Bailey is just finishing his sophomore year but he’s been a well-known prospect on the camp circuit for a few years now and we’ve seen him play better than he showed in the drills on Thursday. By the end of the day's first session, Bailey's arm talent had taken over. He was very good during the one-on-one competitions and in the 7v7 tournament he helped his team earn its championship trophy. His arm strength was among the best in the group and his extensive experience against elite defenders aided his timing and helped him make good decisions with the ball. Bailey nearly made the "stock steady" section but the finer points of his game still need refinement to justify his lofty ranking (No. 24 in the 2020 Rivals100).

Alabama adds state’s top junior, Jayson Jones, to 2020 recruiting class

quote:

Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide picked up a huge commitment for their 2020 recruiting class Monday when they received a pledge from four-star defensive tackle Jayson Jones.

“Really, just the connection I have to the players and how they carry themselves,” Jones told GN regarding why he committed to Alabama. “It’s truly incredible.”

Jones, (6-foot-5, 322 pounds) from Calera, (AL) High, is considered to be a top-five defensive tackle prospect in the country and a top 55 overall talent nationally in the class of 2020.

“I do think about that,” Jones said regarding his high national ranking. “It’s surprising to me that I’m that high on a lot of school’s boards.”

Jones, who is also the No.1 ranked player in Alabama for the 2020 class, chose the Crimson Tide over offers from Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Tennessee and many others, and did so due in large part to his relationship with Saban.

“Honestly, it’s a very strong relationship,” Jones said. “He loves me and I love him.”

Getting a chance to play for Alabama in the SEC has always been something that Jones has wanted to do.

“I’ve always lived in an Alabama household,” he said. “So, it has always been somewhat of a dream to play for Alabama and it’s honestly very exciting to know that I’m going to get to play in the SEC.”

When asked to describe what type of defensive lineman he is, Jones was short and to the point.

“Pretty much I’m a big guy who is also an athletic freak,” he said.

Jones had this message for the Alabama fan base.

“What we are going to try to do it build the best class. You have to have what it takes. Roll Tide.”

Alabama now has five commitments for its 2020 recruiting class. Jones joins four-star wide receiver Dazalin Worsham (Trussville, AL), four-star cornerback Javier Morton (Stone Mountain, GA), four-star linebacker Jackson Bratton (Muscle Shoals, AL), and three-star quarterback Carson Beck (Jacksonville, FL) as the current members of the Tide’s 2020 class.

This. This is way more of a real thing than the "Bama bump" ever was. It's almost like they got frustrated by that comment and have gone 180 in the opposite direction. That and they are all pissed at Shannon so they're hating on Bama out of spite. It's weird and it's obvious.

Seems like Bama fans would leave their site in droves and cause them to reconsider bashing one of the largest, most rabid fanbases in the nation. That's sort of what happened to Scout.com, I think. They sucked, always underrated Bama guys and they no longer exist. Rivals might be wise to take note.

I know reporting and journalism skills have gone downhill in recent years, but damn ... that's a pretty pathetic couple of typos there.

Unless, of course, 247Sports is actually monitoring the consistency of the bowel movements of these guys. In that case, that's investigative reporting on a level not seen since All the President's Men, and I applaud their efforts to get to the bottom of the matter.

From the LSURb regarding Ishmael Sopsher:

quote:

Man oh man. Word from some of the other sites are that his stock is falling. Slow 40. Was just ok during his workouts today. Was about 50/50 in his 1 vs 1 segments. Said he isn’t looking like a can’t miss prospect at all. Many are questioning his motor and work ethic. Said he takes plays off. He can be dominant when he gives max effort but that doesn’t happen regularly. But stock is definitely falling.

Taulia Tagovailoa recruiting 5-star RB Trey Sanders to join him at Alabama

quote:

If Alabama’s quarterback commit Taulia Tagovailoa gets his way, he’ll help the Crimson Tide land a second commitment from five-star running back Trey Sanders.

The nation’s No. 1 running back prospect for the 2019 recruiting cycle is no stranger to Nick Saban’s program. He was once committed to the Crimson Tide but backed off that decision on New Year’s Day of 2018. It didn’t take Sanders long to announce Alabama still held the pole position in his recruitment and he has remained in close contact with the program despite his decision to walk back his commitment to start 2018.

While the Alabama coaching staff has been pitching Sanders on playing in Tuscaloosa for years, the Crimson Tide now have the assistance of peer recruiting via 2019 four-star QB commit Tagovailoa. The two players are currently in Arlington participating in the latest The Opening Finals camp and Sanders admits he’s hearing about the Tide often from his potential future teammate in Tuscaloosa.

“Taulia is always coming at me. We’re on the same (7-on-7) team (at The Opening Finals),” Sanders recently said according to Josh Bean of AL.com, “and he said this could be the future.”

The two players would potentially come together to form one of the most potent backfields in the nation for the 2019 recruiting cycle if they do end up playing together. While Sanders is receiving the fullcourt press from Tagovailoa and the Alabama coaching staff, his brother Umstead Sanders just officially enrolled in Gainesville despite a last-ditch effort by the Crimson Tide to get him to join the program.

We’ll soon find out which pitch is more impactful on Sanders, the one from his future quarterback or the one from his brother.

Trey Sanders picked up another CB to Bama. It's from Steve Wiltfong, based on several sauces.

They are starting to sense that he will end up in Tuscaloosa. By the time NSD rolls around he will be a 3* caliber recruit who would be better suited for ULM or Tulane than the SEC. Then he will sign with LSU and suddenly all those issues will disappear and he will be arguably the best DL recruit since Clowney.

Some continued discussion on the Georgia mock class you posted in the Jayson Jones thread yesterday. A poster over there contends Webb was listed for 2020 because he has “grade issues”. What is this about?

would be cool to see a 2nd Tagovailoa be the reason bama gets the #1 RB in the class again to come with him. Harris always say Tua was one of the big reasons he really wanted to come to bama
