What's the feeling on McCullough? Is he a take for Bama?

For awhile I thought we were gonna pull him for sure, then silence, haven't heard anything about him in like a month. Released a top 4 the other day, Bama, Barn, SC, Tennessee.

So is Cheney gonna get left out... again ? Weird they took his pledge with so many elite DL in this class looking at Bama.

It's not weird at all. Cheney is good and we didn't want a repeat of last year.

For all we know these kids may not even pick us.

Cheney is a quality prospect and we can't afford to slow-play quality DL prospects like last year. The staff is well-aware of that, and we've seen that with Dale and Cheney, and we'll see that again later this week when Alfano announces that he'll be rolling with the Tide. I think the staff would like to have the majority of the class (including 4-5 DL) signed by the time the early signing period rolls around.

Bama is going to load up on the DL this year. We'll be a little thin this year, and then we lose Buggs, Dwight and likely Raekwon. I expect Bama to sign 6 DL this cycle. That leaves us with 4 open slots currently, and the staff feels really good about Dale and Cheney. Cheney is the kind of kid who is going to come in with a chip on his shoulder, out work everyone and then be a monster by his junior year. Plus, the kid is a nationally ranked 4-star player. Some of you act like he's some 2-star diamond in the rough. He really isn't.

Early Signing Period really baffled Saban, I think he knows he went about it wrong and has thus far corrected it.

Didn't take as many placeholder commits like he usually does, allows a high floor in case they miss on the elite prospects they are chasing.

Is Cheney a placeholder commit? I dunno, but they have existed in Saban's classes historically...

Yeah - he has said as much too......think he got caught a bit flat footed last year.

I agree, Saban got caught with his pants down a little bit with the new recruiting cycle last year. It won't happen again. Saban is a master at adapting. That said, I don't see Cheney as a place-holder commit. Kid is a 4-star DE from the state of GA. Looks like we're working hard to cut inroads into that state and developing relationships with high schools and their coaches by singing their best players goes a long way. This is a win win for Alabama and Cheney. We have plenty of room left for more elite DL this cycle. I say we sign two more DE's and two more DT's.

Bama wants Cheney, and Dale too. Their spots are secure, unless they start waivering, visiting other schools, etc. Alfano will be the 3rd DL. It looks like Bama will take at least 6 DLs total. They might even take 7.

Unlike last year, this DL cycle is off the charts. Be a good year to load up and take 7. I'd gladly sacrifice a TE or WR for an extra trench guy in this cycle.

How epic would this DL class be?

1) Sopsher
2) Tuitele
3) Dale
4) Cheney
5) Alfano
6) Ika
7) Pickering OR Young OR Handy

BTW, out of the MS trio, which is Bama most likely to land?

I think Young is most likely.

I hope that is the plan as well. We really should load up this year.

Cheney
DJ Dale
Tuitele
Alfano
Pickering
Young
Sopsher (minus brother)
Ika
Handy

If we could bring in 6 of these, it would be an tremendous haul.

Yep, should be an EPIC DL haul. And it is doable to take 7. Kudos to Cheney, Dale and Alfano for having the brains to commit early. Alfano might be the best DL in the country.

If everyone on that list wants in, Ika seems least likely to get in, even if we take 7. I may wrong about Ika, tho. I think Tuitele and Sopsher are both definite takes; pehaps Pickering is too. Idk who Bama likes better of Handy and Young.

If Charles Moore (MSU commit) shows no issues from his knee surgery and wants in, he could be in the mix. If DeMarvin Leal (ATM commit) wants in, he could be in the mix too.

I feel really good that we will end up with:

Dale
Cheney
Alfano
Tuitele
Byron Young (the most likely of the MS trio)
Sopsher

If we take a 7th DL, I would want it to be Pickering. I'm pretty sure he's the #2 DE on our board, only behind Alfano. I think he's as good as any DE in the country, and he has the body and talent to contribute from day one. I think Byron Young is better than Handy because he doesn't freelance when the play doesn't come his way, although I think Handy has a committable offer and the staff can work with him. He's explosive getting off the ball and he hits hard.

You'll catch hell from some folks, but most over here will be happy to have ya. Geneschin has caught a lot of hell in the basketball thread but he takes it like a champ. He wins 90% of the debates he get in, if not more . The basketball thread gets pretty volatile though. It's great .

I'll repost this in case you missed it on the rant yesterday. Intern Butch at work
