Harbaugh goes go-karting with Aubrey Solomon

The latest chapter of the Aubrey Solomon saga has Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh, defensive coordinator Don Brown and linebackers coach Chris Partridge in Leesburg, Ga., on a go-kart track wooing the 5-star defensive tackle and his mother, Sabrina Caldwell.

Solomon told SEC Country two weeks ago that Alabama had a ‘huge lead,’ and he felt like his recruitment was going to just be an SEC-only race. His plans have changed tremendously since then. After visiting Southern California this past weekend, he will no longer take any visits before making his commitment on signing day, according to a source at Lee County High School. It now looks like a battle between Alabama and Michigan, with Georgia on the outside looking in.

Alabama continues to remain confident with its chances of landing him, even though there has a been run of Michigan predictions on Solomon’s 247Sports Crystal Ball. The Tide have felt confident with Solomon ever since he visited for the Iron Bowl in late November.

Again, any time I write about Solomon, I am going to have to caution everyone: Alabama is in the running for the most erratic recruit in the Class of 2017. You always need to stay on your toes for what he’s going to do or say next. At various points in his recruitment, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Ole Miss and Ohio State have been deemed his public leader.

Solomon admitted that he was immature earlier in this process, but he has learned from what he’s done up until now, he says.

The 5-star prospect has said his decision is going to come down to which school can offer him a combination of the ability to graduate, how well-behaved the team is and how strong of a football program it has.

Alabama, he has said, hits on all of those levels.

“I would say by what they have shown me recently,” Solomon said. “How their defense is playing. Lights out. Just unreal.”

He did compliment Michigan’s defense, too, almost on the same level as Alabama’s.

“If I could rate defenses, Alabama would be 1A and Michigan would be 1B,” Solomon said. “What they’re doing is unbelievable.”

Will Solomon, who de-committed from Michigan after a clerical error and cursed the program in a video, recommit to the Wolverines? That’s the million-dollar question. If there’s one recruit in the country where none of that matters, it’s Solomon.

Expect Saban and several staff members to be in south Georgia every chance they get before he makes his decision.

Here's that creepy frick Harbaugh riding in a go-kart with Solomon's little sister:

Saban, Sarkisian and Ansley check in on Henry Ruggs III

Saban, offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian and defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley were in Montgomery, Ala., on Monday night in a basketball gym watching one of Alabama’s biggest targets in the Class of 2017, 4-star wide receiver Henry Ruggs III.

After Ruggs’ game, the Alabama staff had an in-home visit with the electric receiver’s family. People closest to Ruggs and those inside the Alabama program still continue to believe that the in-state prospect will commit to the Tide. As of now, the plan remains for him to announce his decision on National Signing Day.

Ruggs will take an official visit to Alabama this weekend.

From the article:

He did say why he felt like several prospects from the state of Louisiana end up leaving for Tuscaloosa, which are his plans right now.

“Mainly because probably every year, they’re beating LSU and they are winning national championships,” Allen said. “Even though this year they didn’t win it, they made it to the game. That’s a huge attraction.”

Ouch!

I mean, Harbaugh does have the face of a pedophile but I would imagine a little girl would probably be safe from him

Rusty Mansell is saying it's not even a sure thing that Saban or Smart get an in-home

if rusty believes that then he's an idiot. you're talking about two of the best recruiters in the country. one in Solomon's back yard and the other from the team that the kid said "leads by a pretty good margin" recently.

I'd be more surprised if BOTH didn't visit in home than if neither did.

Devonta Smith snuck in an OV to Florida State:

quote:

Multiple sources have informed Noles247 that Amite (LA) four-star wide receiver Devonta Smith just wrapped up an official visit to Florida State.

The 6-foot-1, 160-pound speedster arrived in Tallahassee on Sunday and left on Tuesday. His mother accompanied him on the two day trip.

Smith took a visit to LSU on Jan.13, he’ll be at Alabama this weekend and then Miami on the 27th. Alabama is the current Crystal Ball leader by a wide margin.

FSU wasn’t considered a player for Smith until now. We’ll have more details on Noles247 as it develops.

FSU is one of those schools I would definitely visit as a recruit, but I certainly wouldn't bring my mother. There are sins of the flesh to be committed in Tallywood

1. THE MOST CONTROVERSIAL RANKINGS

The final Rivals100 for the class of 2017 has been released with the Rivals250 set to be released today. In nearly two weeks, these prospects will put pen to paper and sign with college programs. Having covered this class since our first ranking back in 2015, I can tell you the five guys who have drawn the most buzz when it comes to their rankings. And I can explain how we settled on their final ranking.

1. OL Trey Smith – Hands down the Tennessee commitment has drawn the most attention simply because another network put him at No. 1 overall and the rest followed suit with a high five-star ranking. For us, Smith is a very good prospect who will either be a guard or a right tackle at Tennessee and have a terrific career. We feel comfortable with him finishing just inside the national top 50. But we never saw No. 1 overall and never truly saw a five-star prospect, especially in a class loaded with elite offensive tackle talent and the best center prospect I’ve scouted in probably the last decade.

2. LB Dylan Moses – Moses has gone for a wild ride in the rankings, starting off at No. 2 in the country, sliding outside the five-star range at No. 32 and finishing right there but earning that fifth star back. He was a middle school phenom who became an elite running back prospect and was then re-classified as an athlete as he tried to transition to linebacker. Between his senior year and his Under Armour week performance, he joined guys like Dante Fowler and Raekwon McMillan in recent years to lose that fifth star only to gain it back.

3. RB Najee Harris – Everyone seems to love Harris, but after Cam Akers' senior film came out, some fell in love with Akers a bit more. While Akers is more of a sure-thing at Florida State than Harris is at Alabama, there is little doubt in my mind that Harris has the higher ceiling in the long run. How can you rank a sure thing over a prospect you’re not convinced could turn into a superstar? That’s the risk you sometimes take at running back. Back in 2009 Trent Richardson (No. 6 nationally) was more of a sure thing than Bryce Brown (No. 1 overall) but Brown had a higher ceiling. Obviously the two had very different careers in college. Time will tell if we are seeing a repeat of that.

4. OL Isaiah Wilson – Some don’t have Wilson in their top 100 and everyone except Rivals feels that Trey Smith is a better prospect as an offensive tackle. The argument could be made that, like Smith, Wilson will either be a guard or a tackle at the next level but in our evaluation he’s taller, longer and is further from his ceiling. This will be a fun one to keep an eye on.

5. DBs DeAngelo Gibbs and Richard LeCounte – Both Gibbs and LeCounte are ranked as five-star prospects elsewhere and are far from it on Rivals. They are polarizing in many ways. Gibbs was a five-star at one time but regressed in coverage and we re-classified him as an athlete, while the highest LeCounte got is his current ranking at No. 58. Both players are still highly ranked, so either they both become first-round superstars and we are wrong or they have excellent careers and we are closer to correct. But our view of the duo is different than others for sure.

Pretty crazy that we almost landed everyone on this list sans LeCounte.

Aubrey Solomon

The latest: Solomon has kept people guessing over the past few weeks, changing official visit plans and also cutting his list to a final four group of Georgia, Michigan, Alabama and USC. After visiting the Trojans this past weekend, Solomon has now seen Los Angeles, Ann Arbor and Tuscaloosa officially and has also made several visits to Athens during his high school career. The one-time Michigan commit isn't expected to wait until Signing Day to announce a decision, but when he does announce and which school he picks is still very much up in the air.

Prediction: Alabama. Solomon recently called the Tide his leader, something he did during the summer before committing to Michigan. Will the same thing happen again?

Farrell just released this article about 10 minutes ago FWIW.

Devonta Smith

The latest: Smith officially visited LSU over the weekend and will visit Alabama and Miami before announcing his decision on National Signing Day. The electric playmaker nearly committed to Alabama over the summer and many think the Tide are still the team to beat. However, the option of staying close to home combined with the new offense makes the Tigers a major player. Miami is the wild card, but Smith was once committed to Mark Richt while he and his staff were at Georgia and the relationship with the Canes coaches remains a major factor.

Prediction: Alabama.
The Tide almost got Smith once and he's one of their last remaining uncommitted targets heading into National Signing Day.

LaBryan Ray

The latest: Ray is uncommitted, but the fact that he’s fond of Alabama has been public knowledge for some time. Ray visited Ole Miss, but a commitment to the Rebs is highly unlikely. Tennessee and Florida are slightly more realistic players in Ray’s recruitment. That said, it will take some impressive recruiting heroics from the Vols or Gators to knock him off his path to Tuscaloosa. Alabama has to be seen as the heavy favorite to land Ray as things stand now.

Prediction: Alabama.
The Tide should be able to seal the deal with Ray.

After watching the title game, I've been hoping we could nab a Mike Williams-type receiver. You know, a big body (6'3 and up) that even when covered well is going to go up and win the ball. I thought Williams was the difference in the game in that he was well-covered on a couple of occasions and still came down with balls that weren't great throws.

Is Shavers that guy? I don't know who we really have with great size at the WR position. Sims is probably our biggest guy right now.
