What happened with Shaun Wade?

As mentioned above, it looked like Wade was a top priority for Alabama for several months. But unbeknownst to SEC Country, the staff’s opinion of Wade changed over time, a source close to the team said on Monday night.

That was evident when Alabama did not conduct an in-home visit with Wade during the contact period. If Wade was truly a top priority for Alabama, the staff would have visited him no matter what, but no coach saw him.

It’s unclear why Alabama’s opinion of Wade changed, but it is apparent that the Tide are not beating themselves up over missing on him. They were upset when they missed on another Ohio State commitment, 5-star linebacker Baron Browning, but not Wade.

It sure is interesting how their opinion changed in a few short months because I was told in early fall that Wade was the team’s top cornerback target.

There are NCAA rules that allow "substitute" recruiters. If Kiffin was removed from the road, since we was seeking a head job, he could have been replaced. Even if temporarily.

Sorry if it's been covered but how much eligibility does Buggs have left?

Buggs becomes the second defensive line commit in the Class of 2017 as he joins 4-star defensive tackle Akial Byers. Buggs will be an early enrollee and start his career at Alabama this January. He is expected to send over his papers to Alabama Tuesday afternoon. He will have two years of eligibility remaining when he gets to Alabama.

High school football seasons around the country are wrapping up and last week Rivals.com released its new 2017 rankings.

There is no better time than now to also update the 2018 rankings. On Monday, the Rivals100 Presented by Under Armour for the 2018 class was released along with seven new five-star prospects. Cartersville, Ga., quarterback Trevor Lawrence remained in the top spot, but there were plenty of changes throughout that list that carried over to this Rivals250 release.

Here are the biggest risers in the Rivals250, with plenty of top prospects moving up in the latest rankings release.

DE Jarell Cherry

Movement: +65

Analyst’s take: “Cherry took November visits to Alabama and Texas A&M and holds five offers. Cherry is big, solid defensive end that still hasn’t fully tapped into the monster he can be. With a lot of physical tools at his disposal, he’ll be an elite pass-rusher.” - Krueger

DE Brenton Cox

Movement: N/A

Analyst’s take: “Cox may be the next great edge rusher to come out of the state of Georgia. Coaches rave about his raw ability and he has ideal size along with a frame that can easily add muscle down the line. Clemson, Georgia and Alabama are among the schools vying for his services.” - Wommack

ATH Matthew Hill

Movement: N/A

Analyst’s take: “Hill has garnered the nickname Clark Kent for his quiet demeanor off the field and his spectacular play on it once he puts on his football uniform. The versatile athlete plays both wide receiver and defensive back and looks like he could easily play on either side of the ball at the next level. Alabama, Georgia and others are already battling for Hill.” - Wommack

CB Julius Brents

Analyst’s take: “Brents is now the top player in Kentucky and with good reason. He's a technician as a defensive back and his quick hips and surprising ball skills make him one of the country's best prospects. Alabama, Louisville and others are already after Brents.” - Wommack

TE Malcolm Epps - Alabama commit

Movement: -78

Analyst’s take: “Epps has been committed to Alabama since February. Epps is a long, lean tight end that excels in winning jump-ball battles, but hasn’t taken the opportunity to show more than that just yet. He’s very much still primarily a pure pass-catcher.” - Krueger

The recruiting battle for the state's top senior player looks like it will go down to the wire.

James Clemens four-star defense end LaBryan Ray laughed Monday when asked if he was ready to go ahead and announce his decision. Ray, whose final five are Alabama, Mississippi Sate, Ole Miss, Florida and Tennessee, hinted that his announcement may not come until National Signing Day on Feb. 1.

"That's what it's starting to look like," Ray said.

"I'm just going on my officials to see. It's a long process. It's a big decision for me."

Ray is the No. 1 player on AL.com's A-List of the state's top senior recruits. He's rated the No. 2 strong-side defensive end in the nation by the 247Sports Composite and was selected to play in the Under Armour All-America Game in January. Ray missed this past weekend's Alabama-Mississippi game due to a shoulder injury.

The 6-foor-4, 270-pounder recorded 124 tackles, 25 stops for a loss, 13 sacks and 16 quarterback hurries this past season.

Ray noted several things that will be involved in his college selection process.

"Of course, one of the biggest things is playing time," he said. "The feel of the place. The position coach. That's important. That's the person I'm going to be with every day. The stuff that he teaches is important so it can make me the best player I can be."

Ray made his comments while speaking to the media after a signing ceremony for his teammates, defensive back Kyriq McDonald (Alabama) and linebacker Monty Rice (LSU).

"I love those guys," Ray said. "Being with them every day is something that I'm going to miss. But I look forward to them doing great at Alabama and LSU. I can't be more happy for those guys."

If the 2016 Heisman Trophy race taught us anything, it's that contenders take a variety of paths to award consideration. Among the five finalists who attended last Saturday's ceremony in New York City, only one—Michigan linebacker Jabrill Peppers—was considered a composite 5-star prospect coming out of high school.

Oklahoma receiver Dede Westbrook attended junior college prior to arriving in Norman, while Lamar Jackson carried 3-star status in composite recruit rankings. Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield didn't even hold a scholarship when he enrolled at Texas Tech as a freshman.

The point is, it's awfully difficult to project which high school standouts will ultimately transition into celebrated college studs. Still, this industry is all about projecting talent and there are plenty of young playmakers who appear primed to potentially emerge as eventual Heisman contenders while assessing the elements of their collegiate outlook.

Weighing skill sets, university fits and possible supporting roster structure, here's a glimpse at 10 prospects who may be capable of rising into the mix for one of sports' greatest accolades in upcoming years.

RB Najee Harris

High School: Antioch (Antioch, California)

Recruitment Status: Committed to Alabama

The Case for an Eventual Heisman Campaign

Much like Leonard Fournette at LSU, Heisman Trophy hype will essentially be unavoidable for Najee Harris whether he sticks with his Crimson Tide commitment or lands elsewhere. It comes with the territory of being considered the country's top-ranked overall recruit, reaffirmed this season by a third consecutive 2,000-yard effort.

Harris, a U.S. Army All-American Player of the Year finalist, gained 2,776 yards and 34 touchdowns on the ground in 2016, per MaxPreps. He tallied 98 total touchdowns during the past three years, and led Antioch High School to its deepest playoff run in four decades this fall.

"Adrian Peterson and [2015 Heisman Trophy winner] Derrick Henry are two that come to mind that I have scouted that I can compare him to. Najee is better out of the backfield than both of those U.S. Army Bowl alumni," Erik Richards, the U.S. Army All-American Bowl national recruiting director, told B/R.

Harris, a human battering ram with rare nimbleness at 6'3", 225-pounds, is set to follow a long line of prolific rushers—including Heisman Trophy winners Henry and Mark Ingram—to Tuscaloosa under the direction of Alabama head coach Nick Saban. Michigan may be the biggest threat to flip him before early enrollment, though immediate opportunities seem likely regardless of where he arrives on campus next month.

QB Tua Tagovailoa

High School: St. Louis (Honolulu)

Recruitment Status: Committed to Alabama

The Case for an Eventual Heisman Campaign

You'll be hard-pressed to identify a college football recruit who has enjoyed a more successful 2016 than Tua Tagovailoa. Committed to the Crimson Tide since spring, he earned Elite 11 MVP honors, broke Hawaii's all-time career passing record and led St. Louis High School to a state championship.

Tagovailoa tallied 2,669 passing yards, 727 rushing yards and 35 touchdowns in 11 games as a senior, according to ScoringLive.com. His ability to impact games as a passer (1,214 yards and 13 touchdowns through the air during a three-game span in September) and a runner (four 100-yard rushing games, including a season-high 136 yards in St. Louis' state title victory) help separate him from the pack.

A natural leader, we haven't encountered many participants at The Opening who have been more respected by their peers. Tagovailoa also carries an exceptional competitive drive, which should serve him well in Tuscaloosa.

Alabama true freshman Jalen Hurts hasn't opened the door for much doubt during his surprising run as offensive catalyst of America's top-ranked team, and he carries three more years of collegiate eligibility. His ascension hasn't deterred Tagovailoa, though late offers from schools such as Florida, Oregon and LSU provide alternatives as early enrollment approaches.

Tagovailoa is one of the most unique quarterback prospects—mentally and fundamentally—we've encountered. Our guess is he'll maximize opportunities—and a star-studded supporting cast—when his moment arrives.

This sounds a bit like sour grapes. Kid just won Gatorade player of the year in what is widely viewed as the best state for football. Maybe he cooled on Alabama too? There was a report out after his visit to Bama that he wasn't "wow'd" while on it.

Could easily have been a mutual parting

Maybe they cooled on him after it seemed as if he didn't give them anything to be excited about. These guys are the best in the business and know when a kid is playing around or serious. Just be happy he decided to stay with ol Urbs.
