Exactly! European professional basketball players should not be allowed to come to the US and take away scholarships from our kids. The only reason they are here is because they get paid more to play here than they do in Europe. And, Bediako never played in the NBA. It’s just total bull crap letting European Professional players come here and play on our college teams.

I don’t either. We are having a good season and it’s gonna be all we hear about. Also he, Baylor guy, and all the other former pros are objectively not good for college sports
Buuuuuut Tennessee and Auburn fans are in full-blown Chernobyl mode on Twitter so it’s not all bad

You can only eval the players available to take. I appreciate that our staff is adapting to the times. Once Baylor made a mockery of eligibility norms, Oats knew exactly what to do.

What American kid is Chuck taking an opportunity from on Jan 22, 2026 through the end of the Spring semester?

What is everyone's thoughts on playing him against Tennessee? I'm torn between waiting it out and playing him right away. NCAA can't penalize us for playing him, but at the same time I feel confident that it would negatively impact NCAAT seeding (probably beyond just a loss) if Bediako isn't deemed eligible for the rest of the season. On the other hand, it would be nice to get him incorporated into the lineup ASAP if he were to be eligible the rest of the year.

This situation is fricking wild. My only concern is if bediako loses the case after this temporary order, would we then have to forfeit any game he plays in? If he wins the case, this team turns into a 1-2 seed immediately. And with as bad as our front court depth has been, I guess it's worth the gamble.

His comments are on taking professionals in general.

I'd say go ahead and play him. We probably aren't winning any hardware without more quality front court depth so if playing him for one game before he's determined to be ineligible gets us knocked down a seed line or two out of spite, oh well.

None. We have a scholarship available and he'd only be here until the end of this season. The point is more that if we allow this to become the norm you're going to have a ton of coaches giving away a ton of scholarships to 22 year old European players who have been playing professionally for 5 years.

It's already a norm so we would be stupid to not play with the new rules everyone else is quickly adopting

I still haven't figured out how he could possibly play when he wasn't in school in the Fall. Doesn't make sense. You can't pick up a transfer at the break.
I love the idea of blowing it all up, but part of me wishes we would rise above and not play him.

I don't but they already have when they let Baylor do that. The rules are different now, adjust or get left behind.

Why do you think that?

I'm kind of surprised that people are so up in arms about all of this. The transformation of college sports into a shite show circus with NIL and transfer portal is already well complete. This doesn't really move the needle for me.

Yes, I agree that Bediako is a different player than Williamson and more like Onyejiaka, but still the point remains that the coaching staff missed here taking a flyer on a guy with a heart condition. Now they are trying to cover it up.
I think this has a lot to do with Byrne saying FU to the rest of the country all of this is insane and needs to be fixed pronto. Nobody cared when Baylor did it but now that it is Bama it will get some people's attention.

Williamson was one of the best centers available in the portal last offseason. Onyejiaka is a reclassified HS prospect that was never really anticipated to be a big contributor and his heart condition was uncovered because UA's medical team is likely the most thorough and qualified group of physicians ever to care for him in his young life.
Framing this as desperation out of some recruiting failure they could have avoided is inane.

1. They did not know he had a heart condition
2. He was not expected to play regardless as a reclassified freshman.
3. You can’t “miss” on a flyer…that’s what makes it a flyer.

I coached in JUCO for a long time. Had to be enrolled in school full time the semester the sport started which, in this case, is the Fall. Although it was JUCO, they mimic quite a bit of the NCAA rules. We were never ever able to bring someone in at Christmas to play January-March. They could practice but not play. I don't think I have ever seen someone change schools or transfer from another division after the break and play the conference season at the NCAA level. Just didn't think it was possible because they weren't in school in the Fall at that institution.

Also Louisville, BYU, UTk, and Oklahoma just off the top of my head.
The reaction to this has been markedly different though from what I've seen. I don't recall Drew, Kelsey, Young, Barnes, and Moser getting raked over the coals for it nearly to the extent Oats has. Like how Seth Davis tried to paint him as a hypocrite by only posting where Oats says he disagrees with this stuff and conveniently omitted the next sentence where he said but if this is how the rules are going to be we're going to look at adding players that way. The criticism had been directed at the NCAA for allowing it, but now that they're trying to stop it suddenly the system works and Oats is trying to destroy college sports.
