I agree with this post... and that is why so many in our age group are losing interest. I think the portal and NIL have destroyed the culture our generation has come to love. The tough, commanding field-generals are dying out and it pains me... it truly does... because THOSE are the guys I have loved/hated for 50 years. Now it is just a bunch of clip-board carrying, sloppy-dressed, mealy-mouthed analytics followers who don't seem to want to turn boys into men.

Here’s a painful reality: No one making decisions about college or professional sports programs really cares what old-line, old-school, old-fart fans think. (And remember, I’m within sight of 70, I qualify as an old fart.)

The attitude … and it’s the same way in the media, I sat through corporate meetings and had to bite my tongue because I was the oldest person in the room and that message was being conveyed … is that if you cater to those people and their wants, you’ll die with them.

Unless you’re 18 to 49, you don’t matter. If Bama’s marketing is effective and successful in that age group, and the product is successful enough on the field to satisfy the money men and trustees, DeBoer will keep his job whether he’s a commanding presence or not and whether a contingent of fans likes his schemes or not. If we’re striking out with marketing to the 18 to 49 demographic and he’s not getting bottom line results on the field, he won’t keep his job.

Even though we’re in disagreement, I sincerely respect your take.

Look I fully agree but this is a sports forum. Every single active board on tigerdroppings is filled with people being rude. People being assholes on forums has been a thing since forums came into existence decades ago

I get you’re annoyed by it but it’s best to ignore those comments and move on. Assholes will not stop being assholes because someone calls them out

I have decided that since putting people on ignore is not an option I am going to have the discipline and self control to just stop responding to some people.

We need some speed rushers. DL was getting penetration yesterday but not fast enough to finish the play. I don’t know if it’s a scheme or personnel problem because we haven’t seen much of the “speed rushers” currently on the roster.

The Vandy game is the only real bad game. I think it's clear the coaches thought we would beat them on talent alone and they weren't prepared when they got punched in the mouth. Offense lost the Tennessee and Oklahoma games.

Turnovers gave Vandy short fields and points as well.

Everybody contributed to lose the Oklahoma game. Even the punter. It was pathetic game planning and piss poor motivational effort.

Some excellent points made in this thread, but to reiterate and expound a little

1) There was an insane amount of talent on the 2023 defense that was lost to the portal and NFL draft, at key positions. Folks said Golding was the issue from 2018-2022, but the 2023 defense still had issues with Steele @ DC.

2) I firmly believe that the Vanderbilt game was the essence of a trap game for a new staff. Does that make it excusable, not in the least. But play them any other time during the season and it’s a struggle win versus a loss.

3) Got our arse flat whipped on both lines of scrimmage versus Oklahoma. The game was the total opposite of complimentary football.

4) We have one DL that fits Wommack’s scheme and that is Overton. He transferred in before Saban retired, so we were lucky to get him.

5) Our DL Coach is a great recruiter. His recruiting assignments reach beyond the defensive line. How much power do you think he had over Saban and two DCs (Golding and Steele) with regards to talent evaluations for DL? Did he decide who the top targets were?

That said, DL development has been lacking.

6) This is a new scheme with a lot of inexperienced players. We have also had some significant injuries. Run defense looks like shite because of this.

7) Defense looks good when we bring pressure because it is in obvious passing situations. So you have played good defense if you get a team behind the down and distance to bring pressure.

8) Adjustments were made versus Oklahoma. At the half.

9) It is a new era with the transfer portal and NIL. That is why Saban retired and you are seeing older coaches like Chip Kelly and Gus Malzahn step away and take positions where they can focus on coaching football versus trying to keep a staff and roster together for 12 months. And younger HC like Wommack jumping up from the Group of Five, which is about to get eaten alive in the next CFP deal.

We look pretty damn good coming off a bye week this year and a little rest
might help some of our younger guys reset for the playoffs on both sides of the ball.

But this team only goes as far as the QB. Same as 2023.

A lot of thoughts:

-It was an adjustment that had to be made for the players...on top of losing almost all the secondary

-The coaches tried to stay steady with a system that the players were struggling with early and frankly it failed. The coaches adjusted to become uber aggressive and to wean in the new style.

-This D is predicated on limiting points and forcing turnovers. It makes offenses have to stay uber focused and sustain multiple long drives to score. A war of attrition kind of thing. On points and turnovers, it has been very successful

-The team is lacking playmakers on front 7. The secondary has some potential but is so very young. Moore for all his hiccups has been the stalwart this D needed in most of the games this season(he had horrible Vandy game)

-Either through recruiting or portal, the team has to get more talented at linebacker for this D to become really good.

This. I don’t think our DL has played poorly, but they don’t shine. No one under Roach’s guidance has been a game wrecker. James Smith, Overton and Payne were all Five Star prospects in high school. They have had their moments but they do not consistently disrupt the opposing offense. I hope there is a meaningful evaluation of Roach and his role within the program after this season. Saban kept him around for years and KDB retained him, so maybe I don’t know shite, but the results on the field from the DL unit have been very underwhelming relative to our DLs from 2009-2017.

Freddie is a cool dude but its time for him to earn his way somewhere other than Alabama. I just highly doubt he is even an average DL coach. Not saying he cant become that, but he didnt get into collegiate coaching because he was a great coach. We need the guy that earned his chops the hard way coaching the DL

Meaning - 5 other SEC teams figured it out. And here's the kicker - Georgia State beat them. GEORGIA STATE.

Well Bama beat Georgia...but lost to Vandy. shite happens. Notre Dame beat A&M...but lost to Northern Illinois shite happens.

Vandy got Bama early in season when they were fresh. Pavia literally had a perfect game where he made zero mistakes and made every right read. All the teams that played Vandy afterwards knew what they were capable of...and they still went toe to toe with all of them, including Texas. Vandy's lack of depth and Pavia being beaten up has worn on them after mid point of season...shite happens

The encouraging thing is that the defense in whole improved as the season went on even though our personnel was young in the back and not necessarily the right type players in the front. The discouraging thing was they also had some inconsistency especially on the line. Saban was obnoxiously foul on weeks we played lesser opponents. Almost to the point of questioning his sanity but now we see that as a staff you have to do something unusual to focus an 18 year old mind on playing your best against a team you should beat. we also learned that any team in division 1 will kick your arse if you don't play hard. I think one thing that really caught DeBoer off guard was how every team views the Alabama game as their superbowl. He didn't get that before. He learned it the hard way this year.

When we bring pressure we’ve looked good. It’s when we’ve been up against power run power option teams that we just sit back and get run on for 3-8 yard chunks that absolutely grind the clock and the defense down.

I think when properly schemed- heavy QB run offenses are really hard to stop, especially if the QB can throw the ball because you can't really stack the box to get the number advantage back. Everyone saw on Friday night when Kirby's defense was absolutely torched by Tech that this isnt just a Wommack problem.

We gave up 28 or more points 2 times (UGA/Vandy). We gave up less than 20 points 7 times (4 times vs FBS opponents).

Our defense lost 8 of our 12 leading tacklers from 2023.

Our defense lost 5 of our top 7 leading tackle for loss performers from 2023.

Our defense lost our top 3 sack performers from 2023.

Our defense lost players that accounted for 10 of 12 interceptions from 2023 (plus Kool-Aid).

We lost all of that, implemented a new system and performed at basically the same level as we have since 2021. We had some ugly performances - the main one being the Vanderbilt game and then a frustrating (but not game losing) one against Oklahoma. There are parts of the season on defense that felt like we struggled to adjust.

But overall, given the fact that we installed a brand new scheme and replaced our entire secondary, both our pass rush ends and depth on the DL, I'd say that the performance was a pretty solid season.

Anyone still ragging on the defense is still just mad about the Vandy game and has let bias cloud the judgment for the rest of the season.

1. Western Kentucky - 0 pts
2. USF - 16 pts (only TD started on Bama 39 via Jam Miller fumble)
3. @ Wisconsin - 10 pts
4. UGA - 34 pts (good team, still green secondary, stepped up with late INT)
5. @ Vandy - 33 pts (clunker here, no doubt about it)
6. USCe - 20 pts (would have been 13 if Bernard didn't score, got late INT)
7. @ Tennessee - 24 points (Defense got 3 1st half TOs that Offense turned into 0 pts)
8. Mizzou - 0 pts
9. @ LSU - 13 pts
10. Mercer - 7 pts
11. @ OU - 17 pts (second TD started on Bama 14 because of Milroe pick)
12. Auburn - 14 pts

This is despite:

1. Losing EIGHT starters on defense from last year (Dallas Turner, Chris Braswell, Justin Eboigbe, Koolaid McKinstry, Terrion Arnold, Caleb Downs, Jalen Key, Trey Amos). Only Lawson, Campbell, Malachi, Keenan, and Tim Smith were even contributors last year. That's a HUGE amount of losses.

2. Running a completely different scheme.

3. Losing 3 of the few veteran players we have throughout the season (Keon Saab, Q Robinson, Deonte Lawson).

4. Playing multiple true freshmen in the secondary out of necessity (Zabien Brown, Jalen Mbakwe, Red Morgan, Zavier Mincey).

So... we lost damn near the whole defense, installed a brand new scheme with brand new coaches, assembled a secondary made entirely of true freshman and transfers (except for Moore), and ended up with a Top 15 defense...

And that's somehow a problem and y'all want to fire the DC?!?!? You've got to be kidding me. Turn off Finebaum and get a grip.
