Relatively weak win to bring in a former player.

Seems odd that we don't have the money to pay him.

He has not hired and OC or DC yet?

This. He knows. He's seeking cash.

Imagine spending $3M to 'buy' a player, and then they get injured. Are you really gonna want to spend $3M on a player again?
Imagine spending $XXM like Ole Miss has in the portal in the hopes of 'buying' a Natty. Then you don't win a Natty. Are you really gonna want to spend $XXM again?
The people spending $3M and $XXM likely have "frick you" money, so I don't think it really matters to them. Maybe they'll be more careful about who they give it to in the future, but I don't think it'll stop them from spending $3M again on a player.
Remember, even if you pay $3M and the guy is injured, at least he's on your roster and not your opponent's.

Does the constant trolling get tiresome for you? I guess I contribute by responding, so I'm part of the problem.

I’m guessing that KD is giving what information he has on roster and staff to the correct people.
I just don’t think you and I are are important bearers of that information

That is a good point.

Lmao this sport is ruined. And I’m not going to wish this dude luck or thank him for shite. He’s chasing cash, it’s a business. The eulogizing and begging of guys like Bond to come back on social media just feeds the ego of these guys. Oh well I’m sure they’ll create rules to reign in NIL and the Portal AFTER our roster and program gets decimated.

I was a season ticket guy for years. I spent Friday night thru Sunday morning dealing with huge tailgating infrastructure. I moved to Georgia, spent a couple of years still doing the Friday night to Sunday morning home game routine. Then I made a decision, with the way colege football has changed and the amount of money the University is asking for each year, was it worth my time and effort?
I chose instead to spend my money other ways. I built a viewing room / theater for watching the games and took back the time associated with Saturdays in the Fall. I have never looked back.
Alabama stopped (for the most part) playing for the A on their chest 10 to 15 years ago. Alabama started recruiting nationally first and the kids were playing for themselves alone. They came to Alabama because they viewed Coach Saban as their ticket to the NFL. Players were processed to make room for the next round of potential stars. And the cycle continued.
NIL combined with the portal gave enough power to the "stars" that the A on the chest did not mean anything to them any longer. The kids who were all about Alabama were support players at best. Most of those "I love Alabama" kids ended up at other schools if they wanted to play. And I ended up sitting on the recliner watching the entertainment rather than in the stadium watching kids that played for the A on their chest like I had done 40+ years ago.

Do you understand what relatively mean? A corner following you to your new school is a relatively weak win compared to losing Caleb Downs.

Losing a future All-Pro and MAYBE bringing in a future fringe roster player is not a trade I'd prefer to be making.
Losing two best returning pass catchers, a sure starter at corner, and best overall player in the portal is basically a big fat L on roster retention by the staff. Probably little that could be done about it but sometimes you take Ls on bad beats.
People need to get their minds right for 8-4 being the optimistic take because I bet Caleb Downs leaving is going to push a few more out the door too. From the outside looking in, the vibe seems bad now and they haven't secured a win big or small on the roster front. Of course, this ignores the wins they have made that just aren't news because staying isn't news...but that isn't how the PR side of this works externally.

Yeah but I enjoyed all those national titles brought in with people who came here for the brand instead of the school.
When people see the product built on just the kids who want to be in Tuscaloosa irrespective of the head coach's brand, they'll be clamoring for the days where Alabama was able to pull kids from wherever to play here.

Texas fans at least are certain that they’ll get him.
I have always felt we cannot straight up win at NIL. We just don’t have billionaires backing our sports that many other schools have. Saban shielded us for a couple of years with his aura. Without that now, we are naked.
We can still compete but recruiting at an elite level may be beyond our means.

I think that the rude awakening our fan base is getting on how disloyal these Uber-talented guys are to the school, team, and fan base, will make 8-4,10-2, even a 7-5 season some years more tolerable. Because 1. A lot more of the guys on the field will actually care and 2. The sport is so fricked anyways that many will revert back to focusing exclusively on beating our immediate rivals.

Consider that it may be worth the investment from several teams to pick off our players. Just enough key cogs to help insure a rocky “look” is all you need to start a landslide of support away from Alabama and the new staff. Unfortunately we are the first big dog to have this occur but it won’t be a singular occurrence. New staff is just going to have to weather it and prove it on the field.

I knew we would lose a number of players, but I didn’t expect to lose what we have so far, with likely many more to follow. I also didn’t expect us to lose all but 2 (about to be just 1) of our recruiting class for next year. NIL and the transfer portal have absolutely destroyed college football. Losing Downs is an absolutely devastating blow. Proctor I hear is likely next. I know some things are beyond this staff’s control, but they need to somehow find a way to hit the brakes to get this program back to being viewed the way it should be, even without Coach Saban. We need to get some figurative bandages from some wins in player retention or the recruiting trail, because this program is bleeding rapidly right now. And the 30 day window is not near over yet.
