What a damned baby.

""A lot of backlash that I received from [the USC game] was that I came out nervous," Barnett told ESPN senior writer Ted Miller. "I think you could ask just about every teammate and they'd agree that I wasn't. But a certain coach went out to the media and said that I was, and so I got that negative reputation from it."

Sideline reporter Sam Ponder said at halftime of ABC's telecast of the Alabama-USC game that Tide coach Nick Saban had said Barnett had been lifted because he looked nervous during the season-opener."

Apparently on the first day of classes at Bama, this douche stood up and announced his name and that he was going to be Bama's next starting QB.

He got a negative reputation because he continued to look like a deer in the headlights. Even against Western Kentucky. The guy has an NFL frame. Seems to understand the game. But is a major prick and has bad nerves.

And he's not a lock to win the job at Arizona State. But I'm sure the new offense with Napier helps.

If he starts, betcha he loses the job before the end of the season.

I don't particularly like the way he left, but I think our fans took the "nervous" comment by Saban and ran with it. I don't think he was any more nervous than other first time QB's. Bama fans were just enamored with Hurts' expressionless face.

I expect him to be a good QB at... wherever the frick he transferred.

I won't disagree but I mentioned to my son after his first series that he looked rattled (and yes, I think I used the "deer in the headlights" phrase)...doesn't mean he was, he just looked that way to me...also doesn't mean he wouldn't have settled down after another series or two. He looked pretty steady when he came back in late in the game.

I suspect he'll do well at Arizona State...other than Washington and at times USC, last year the PAC-12 defenses were not that good...

He can blame whoever he wants to. I don't think the coaches would have put Hurts out there unless they thought he gave them the best chance. At the end of the day, it's Barnett's job to do enough so that it's not even a question. He didn't. Best of luck at ASU.

I hope Barnett does well at ASU, but our coaches put guys in the game that give us the best chance to win. They didn't think it was him. Thus isn't a good look.

Watching the video of his plays vs USC, I don't see much nervousness. The pass downfield to Howard was nice, as was the td pass to Dieter. In fact, every pass was in the hands of the receivers. Wish we'd had that in the Clemson game. I think we would have won it.

Barnett vs USC

edit: The 2 hits he took down near the goal line didn't seem to faze him much, either.

I'm not going to argue whether he was nervous or not, who knows, but there is no reason to be nervous when you go in up by 30.

I won't pretend to know what the coaches saw in the USC game, but he looked like a lost puppy dog against Western Kentucky.

Hurts seemed scared shitless at times last years, bailing out way too quickly, and turned the ball over way too much.

edit: What specifically, reviewing that video, should I look for that exhibits nervousness or fear. I just don't see it.

Only time O.J. was thrown a good enough ball to catch it in stride all year.

Yep. I tend to believe the coaches just really wanted to implement more RPO's. Otherwise, I think Barnett would have won the job. He's a talented player. Hell, he threw two passes in that game alone that were better than any Hurts threw all year.

I'm not gonna get back into this whole thing, but the coaches believed Barnett was much more of a threat to give away games than Hurts.

Maybe they were right, maybe they were wrong.

Yeah. I have said before that I think the coaches initially thought that Hurts could bring some of what Watson did when we played them before. Wrong answer.

This is where the Hurts thing gets frustrating. You can be honest about his season without adding negative things to it.

O.J. literally had an completely in-stride 68 yard touchdown catch in the 2nd half of the national frickin championship game.

OJ Howard 68 Yard TD vs Clemson

I defended him when he first transferred, but he looks like an entitled punk in that interview. Not only was he nervous in the USC game, it was widely reported that he was a nervous wreck in scrimmages.

Hurts was much better in practices against out defense so to think that Barnett would've given us a better shot in any game is foolish at best.

How is it the wrong answer when Hurts did show some of the playmaking ability as Watson in 2016?

As the announcer in that video says...
"Jalen Hurts finally produces a big play in the passing game"

At the time he was 10 of 24 for 117 yards including that play, and unfortunately for us, he didn't produce any more big plays in the passing game.
