I'd already forgotten that guy's name. It's amazing that random bums who never do anything else somehow catch fire against Bama.

Watson beat us in 16 was absolutely a dual threat.
Side note yes it is early but Milroe at this point looks to be our QB.
We will see.

That's because Jimbo threw their game against Miss. State the prior week and spent that entire week game planning for Alabama. He had a perfect plan for us and lost to State when they had no business losing.

I wonder how much NFL Scouts got paid to convince themselves that Mitch Trubisky was better than Deshaun Watson. Any Bama fan would have corrected them for free

LOL it's mid April. Much can and will happen between now and the end of August.

I'd bet money that the first official depth chart for the Middle Tennessee game looks like this.
QB: Jalen Milroe or Ty Simpson

Yep and both guys will see playing time in that game.

If I remember correctly, the competition between McCarron and Sims was alive Week 2 of 2011 when we visited Penn State (or at least we acted like it was publicly)

Yes. Both of them saw playing time against Kent State in the opener that year and it was obvious that McCarron was the better player. Sims transferred after the season was over and the rest is history.

yep

McCarron started the Tide's first game against Kent State but had to share the job with Phillip Sims. This week he was on his own. He gave coach Nick Saban no reason to make a change until the game was out of reach.
Saban, of course, was not about to declare McCarron the unchallenged No. 1.
"We still have a competition at the position," Saban said. "We really do feel like we have two very good players and we want both guys to continue to develop. But I thought AJ did a nice job today."

Wellllllllllll
Alabama v. Kent State Week 1 2011
AJ: 14/23 226 yards 1 td 2 ints
Sims: 7/14 73 yards 0 tds, 2 ints
This place might crash if we get these kind of numbers leading up the Texas game

I also seem to remember our Oline forgetting that the season had started in that first game.

For some reason I think that our offense will probably have better stats than that. At least we hope

Our skill position players are a little better in 2023. I love that 2011 team but Maze, Hanks and Norwood (who I loved as a player) are not on the level of today's athletes.

Wow all the memories are coming back. 4 turnovers and couldn't run the ball. However, still won by 41 because the defense gave up 90 total yards on 70 plays. Their only 7 points came off what was essentially a Pick-6. First indication that that defense was gonna be pretty good

Their QB threw the ball 47 times for 99 yards

This idiotic. The NFL still has the best coaching and best athletes in the world, Jalen and Lamar are proving their other ways to win but also showing guys can get better if you give them time but if you watched the Super Bowl, the one where Jalen was throwing darts all over the field and say that’s “poor Qb-ing” then you’re not very smart or bias for some reason.

I had forgotten Calzada too. I happened to see his name the other day. I had no idea where he was going after leaving the Barn. The answer....................................
Incarnate Word. Yes from beating Bama to Incarnate Word.

How many pocket passers have also done nothing in the NFL? Most QBs stink regardless of their style and if we talk about recent SB winners that’s also hard to judge because recently teams have finally started to not be bias against athletic QBs and most the recent SB were won by Brady. Let’s see the next 10 years I’m sure most will be athletic play extenders

The "freak athlete running QB's who can sorta throw will take over the NFL any day now" narrative has been pushed for the last decade and still hasn't happened. It's still very much a passing league, but guys like Herbert, Burrow and Allen that can scramble on top of being consistently accurate seem to be popping up a lot more frequently.
Has it not happened?
The 32 NFL Starters at the beginning of last season:
NFC:
East:
- Eagles - Jalen Hurts
- Cowboys -Dak Prescott
- Giants - Daniel Jones
- Commanders - Carson Wentz
South:
- Bucs - Tom Brady
- Falcons - Marcus Mariota
- Saints - Jameis Winston
- Panthers - Sam Darnold
North:
- Packers - Aaron Rodgers
- Bears - Justin Fields
- Lions - Jared Goff
- Vikings - Kirk Cousins
West:
- 49ers - Trey Lance (Jimmy G/Purdy)
- Seahawks - Geno Smith
- Cardinals - Kyler Murray
- Rams - Matthew Stafford
AFC:
East:
- Bills - Josh Allen
- Dolphins - Tua Tagovailoa
- Jets - Zack Wilson
- Patriots - Mac Jones
South:
- Titans - Ryan Tannehill
- Colts - Matt Ryan
- Jaguars - Trevor Lawrence
- Texas - Davis Mills
North:
- Steelers - Mitch Trubisky/Kenny Pickett
- Bengals - Joe Burrow
- Browns - Jacoby Brissett/Deshaun Watson
- Ravens - Lamar Jackson
West:
- Chiefs - Patrick Mahomes
- Broncos - Russell Wilson
- Chargers - Justin Herbert
- Raiders - Derek Carr
By my count, there were 10 QBs who were QBs who are traditional pocket passers, and 22 who were threats with their legs off-script.
And the 4 guys who are going in the 1st round this year all fit the latter (Bryce Young, CJ Stroud, Will Levis, and Anthony Richardson), while 3 of the 10 statues are on the way out the door (Tom Brady, Davis Mills, and Matt Ryan) with a couple more soon to follow (Matt Stafford, Ryan Tannehill).
