I just can't believe that he's playing right tackle. He looks so awkward and overwhelmed. Not a tackle body type at all. At some point we have to play the better players even if they're inexperienced.
That’s something I’ve noticed. Watching a new Tackle in high school they look similar. Still trying to figure out how to move and think. It’s weird honestly.

The fact that Owens is starting at RT worries me about George and Latham. If either of them were even close to ready, you'd have to think we'd be seeing them more. That's a concern. How have we not developed any other tackles with all of the talent we've recruited on the OL the last 3-5 years? A washed up center is the best we can do at tackle on the best CFB program in the land? For real? Hard to believe.

As always, Saban values knowing what to do on every single play a lot more than physical ability. Owens probably knows the playbook inside-out by now, and is trusted to understand his assignment within each play.
George and Latham may be world-beaters in terms of ability, but if they blow assignments during practice, they're not gonna see meaningful playing time barring an injury.

I believe George or Latham will take over for Owens pretty soon. Watching that tape is going to be tough. He just doesnt have the requisite arm length.

Definitely important, but what's Owens knowing RT assignments worth if he can't execute them well consistently?

Did you playback Owens film from Miami?
No but I'm planning to tomorrow. I recall him being not good but less of a problem than in this game. I would guess that's because Mercer uses traditional D Lineman on the edge whereas Miami uses undersized OLBs that he can dominate physically (at least when he can get his hands on them).

I saw Dalcourt I believe get blown back like he was shot from a cannon ... Anyone else see this play?
Yes. I actually think on that play Cohen may be a bit to blame. Cohen was supposed to help in a double team but was slow getting there and by the time he did it was too late. Nevertheless he got blown up which is never good. Dalcourt is just a smaller guy and so at times he's gonna get blown up on a bull rush. Overall I thought he was ok, not good, but ok.

But, we won the Natl Championship game and playoff with him.
Yes, but it was at Center, not Tackle. That requires a much different skill set. Like I said Owens when he gets both hands on a player can at least hold his ground. Well, getting your hands on someone is rarely an issue from the center spot. And with the surrounding talent on that line not much more was needed than for him to hold his ground.

Truth is we missed on a few highly rated prospects. Tommy Brown, Amari Kight, and in particular Pierce Quick. Those are the guys who should be filling this spot, but none of them appear even close to qualified at this point to take over. Instead we are having to look for younger players like George and Latham to be ready earlier than they should need to be.

I saw it and im pretty sure it was a double team by the defense. Looked like he was supposed to get help from the guard.

I think Brown is at guard. The other two havent shown up anywhere Ive seen.
Did anybody watch Latham against Mercer? How'd he look?

They were all recruited at tackle. Brown is 6'7 320. Brown and Quick have both mostly worked at guard over the last year.

Are random posters better than Saban & Co. at evaluating and selecting our best five OL?

Well, do you have those evaluations? Can you share them? If not, id settle for just a random poster who watched him play.

Just to be clear, I don't claim to be... the coaches get paid a lot of money to do it for a living and the record speaks for itself. In Saban I trust.
But I just enjoy the discussion, talking ball, and appreciate the others who engage.

I had been enjoying the OL discussion too.
And although I have lots of faith in Saban and his staff and admit I'm not a well-qualified evaluator, I'm still guilty of saying I don't think Owens is our best option for RT.

Gut feeling is we lose Bill O'Brien to USC. I can see us switching him with Helton as OC.
Posted on 9/13/21 at 9:30 pm to RollTide4Ever
Perhaps Tom Herman may be considered for the next OC , assuming it’s a matter of short time till O’Brien is hired as head coach somewhere
Posted on 9/13/21 at 9:40 pm to RollTide4Ever
USC's AD might want Luke Fickell who he hired at Cincy.

I think that would be a smart hire.
