Jobe is working to become a real shutdown corner, looked very good in A-Day game... I agree, Shy played very well last year, but think he was always looked at, after Nickel, as a safety and Mayden is apparently overtaken the "other" safety spot.

With Kelly as the new Safety's coach, I would think everyone is coming from having to impress the new coach...and Kelly must believe in Mayden...Can't believe that Shy wont be on the field quite a bit when the season starts ... he is just too good (nice to have quality back ups in any case... both guys are Seniors)

I think you guys are reading way too much into this re: Carter.

He is one of the clear Top 4 DBs along with McKinney, Diggs, and Surtain and will be on the field in every package.

In base, it will be Carter (FS), McKinney (SS), Surtain (CB), Diggs (CB).

In Nickel, either Carter stays at FS with Jobe coming on as the 3rd CB and Diggs/Surtain moving to Star, or Carter moves to Star and Mayden comes in at FS.

In Dime, Carter slides to Money and Mayden comes on as FS.

Like the OL, we are trying to figure out which guys give us the best combination of 4 (base), 5 (nickel), and 6 (dime), but Carter will be in every combination.

So we have a "really" good offensive line per CNS, 2 really good running backs, probably the best group of receivers we have ever had, IMO-the best quarterback since Richard Todd, and we can be good at TE. So, at least on paper, the offense should be pretty good.

fixed it

I’m ready for game 1. I finally started to get antsy today. I want a no mercy season. No quarter to be given.

I think this is the only way to play it this year. No brakes on offense, play what you have on D. Just bring it.

I wonder how mayden has improved. He’s played in some key roles but just has never seemed to make many plays. Hopefully he’s more confident this year as we will need him to step up

Is he not ready to start from a mental standpoint or do you think he just isn't physically capable of playing at a high level? I'm not really sure who'd step up and replace him at this point. Everyone behind him is a freshman or sophomore, one of whom is a candidate to randomly pack his shite up and leave the team in the middle of the night.

The process is what Saban has built his system on and it's responsible for all the titles.
I saw an interview with him going into the UGA title game and he said he left maybe at that time 2 more national titles of the field.
Based on all the intangibles of both he with coaches decisions and players execution .
There were under class-men who should have played early and maybe would have made a difference a few critical possessions/snaps.
But true to his process that you are gonna have to reach Saban's standards of when he will let you play.
It should not be any-other way as it's the key to getting all these 5 stars to buy into the process.

Saying all this there no doubt 10 could maybe step in now if his weight is right and if he does not flip out again.
We may see take the spot down the line this year.
He will start next year at one of those spots. I think he can handle it right now only because the kids is just a game'er .

Alabama Football: Final fall camp scrimmage may be different by Ronald Evans
quote:

Alabama football will have its second and last full scrimmage of fall camp Saturday afternoon. This fall camp and the scrimmage are different from the past.

Much is always learned about players during the last scrimmage of fall camp. For most positions, the scrimmage will determine who the Alabama football staff wlll invest in for the most future practice reps. The change is driven by a time management reality. Development of all players will be maintained but within a couple of days, practice reps must be apportioned.

Next week’s game-week depth chart will be more fluid than normal. At inside linebacker, and in the trenches, players will continue to battle for at least a few weeks. No disrespect intended to Duke, but the Alabama football staff can afford to be patient until mid-September or later if it so chooses.

Given there is limited competition for many starting slots, Saturday’s scrimmage should not be filled with drama. In fact, the biggest concern on Saturday will be to get through it without any new or worsened injuries.

Specific areas for scrutiny on Saturday

Alabama football fans want to hear about strong performances from at least two inside linebackers, other than Dylan Moses. Markail Benton appears to currently have the lead to start next to Moses. How he plays and how well two potential backups perform is important.

Coming off injuries, neither D.J. Dale or LaBryan Ray should see much action Saturday. It would not be shocking if both are held out. Phidarian Mathis, Justin Eboigbe and Christian Barmore have opportunities to push themselves forward as regular rotators in the two-deep. Crimson Tide fans will be interested to learn how Ishmael Sopsher and Byron Young’s conditioning hold up.

At the end of Saturday, it should be known if there is a close battle for quarterback No. 2. Numerous recent reports are Mac Jones has had a strong camp. If Taulia Tagovailoa is going to push Mac for practice reps and playing time, he needs to stand out during the scrimmage.

Given Deonte Brown’s suspension and both Chris Owen and Matt Womack being nicked up recently, the interior of the offensive line will not be solidified on Saturday. Not including Brown, five guys will continue to compete for the three, guard and center slots. Owens, Womack, Emil Ekiyor, Evan Neal and Lance Dickerson appear to have equal chances of starting in week one.

Alabama football fans will also be hoping for another strong scrimmage by kicker (and maybe punter) Will Reichard. Joseph Bulovas and Skyler DeLong will continue to battle the true freshman.

The scrimmage is scheduled for 12:30 PM. A large number of invited guests will be watching.
