-- In the secondary, Patrick Surtain II looks like the nickel back (aka Star) in the nickel formation with Josh Jobe and Trevon Diggs at corners. Jayln Armour-Davis and freshman Marcus Banks were corners in the second group.

-- Shyheim Carter was the nickel back with the second group in nickel.

I thought Shy Carter played great most of last year. Josh Jobe must really be kicking arse out there. I'm assuming Shy will still play a ton and will be a starter in the Dime package. Feeling a lot better about the secondary going into this year.

Jobe is working to become a real shutdown corner, looked very good in A-Day game... I agree, Shy played very well last year, but think he was always looked at, after Nickel, as a safety and Mayden is apparently overtaken the "other" safety spot.

With Kelly as the new Safety's coach, I would think everyone is coming from having to impress the new coach...and Kelly must believe in Mayden...Can't believe that Shy wont be on the field quite a bit when the season starts ... he is just too good (nice to have quality back ups in any case... both guys are Seniors)

5 things that should scare Alabama fans, futures bettors in 2019 Updated Aug 15, 4:24 PM;Posted Aug 15, 3:50 PM By Christopher Smith
quote:

Will Alabama win this season’s college football national championship?

In the last decade, “yes” has been better than a coin flip. Nick Saban’s program has responded well to postseason losses, and this is the penultimate season for the historic 2017 offensive signing class.

Yet this could be one of the most challenging years in the Tide’s quest for hardware.

Alabama’s futures odds vary by sportsbook. But the Tide are less than 3/1 to win the title, either as co-favorites with Clemson or as a close second.

Investments in Oklahoma (up to 15/1) and Utah (33/1) are more logical, considering the opportunity to hedge and lock in a profit if those teams make the playoff.

The best-case scenario if you’re betting on Alabama is a return of about 250 percent after a five-month wait. That’s great if it were guaranteed.

Alabama is good enough to win another national championship, but there are more obstacles than usual.

1. QB Tua Tagovailoa’s health
The most explosive starting quarterback in program history has suffered a series of bumps in Tuscaloosa.

Injuries to Tagovailoa’s hand, knee and ankle have limited him. He sat out the Manning Passing Academy this summer to protect a tight hamstring.

Alabama lists him at 6-foot-1 and 218 pounds. He talked this summer about improving his body and focusing more on his eating habits.

But Tagovailoa and his backup aren’t a champion weight lifters with injury-protecting tree trunks for legs.

There’s no more safety net in the form of Jalen Hurts.

Tagovailoa played in all 15 games last year, throwing or rushing on 412 offensive snaps. However, in some games, he wasn’t close to 100 percent effective.

You’ll never see No. 13 curl into the fetal position at the thought of a pile-driving SEC defensive lineman. But he’s been susceptible to injury. If he misses significant time, Alabama futures bettors will depend on Mac Jones or Taulia Tagovailoa to protect their investment.

2. The 2019 Clemson Tigers

Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide never will be intimidated. Saban is 3-2 against the Clemson Tigers. But Alabama should respect the ACC’s top program as perhaps its only true peer.

On Jan. 7, Clemson earned the most resounding win by either team in the four College Football Playoff meetings.

Trevor Lawrence should be considered the best NFL quarterback prospect since Andrew Luck in 2012, and his cadre of NFL skill players at least matches what Alabama has to offer. And for those snickering at Alabama’s schedule, Clemson’s toughest ACC games are vs. Florida State, at Syracuse and … at N.C. State? Maybe?

5Dimes listed Clemson at -600 to make the College Football Playoff this season. If Alabama wants another national championship, it will have to take down a school that just beat it by 28.

3. Lack of depth
This seems like an odd concern to graft onto Alabama after four No. 1 recruiting classes in the last five years, according to the 247Sports Composite.

But the Crimson Tide lost 12 players to early NFL draft entry the last two years, a program record. Add in key injuries and transfers, and the team enters the season needing to avoid further attrition at quarterback, running back, tight end and inside linebacker.

Alabama lost Josh Jacobs (first-round NFL pick) and Damien Harris (third round) at running back, and then five-star freshman Trey Sanders suffered what’s expected to be a season-ending injury.

Alabama lost
Irv Smith (second round) at tight end, and then Kendrick James entered the transfer portal.

Alabama lost Mack Wilson (fifth round) at inside linebacker, and then projected starter Joshua McMillion suffered what’s expected to be a season-ending injury.

Pass rusher Eyabi Anoma has left the program, and Hurts now is Oklahoma’s starting quarterback.

4. Improving SEC competition
Alabama has appeared in all five iterations of the College Football Playoff. It won a national championship two seasons ago despite failing to win the SEC West. Six of the last 10 national championship trophies reside in Tuscaloosa.

Get Alabama to December with a chance and the team usually capitalizes. But making it out of the SEC and into the four-team field will be harder this year than it has been since the end of the BCS era.

Ed Orgeron should field his best LSU team. This will be Kirby Smart’s most talented roster at Georgia. Auburn should be better and hosts the Iron Bowl. Texas A&M is good enough to scare top-10 teams on any given Saturday.

One has to wonder if Alabama will get into the College Football Playoff a sixth consecutive time if it fails to win the SEC Championship Game, which is a healthy possibility.

5. Staff turnover
I considered ranking the loss of defensive lineman Quinton Williams instead. He ruined plays for opposing offenses and disguised Alabama’s defensive weaknesses.

But Alabama has hired eight coordinators in five seasons. The majority of the assistant coaches have changed since January. That’s unprecedented staff turnover.

The institution of an early signing period, among other things, caused Alabama’s recruiting class to slip in 2018. Saban responded by hiring a younger, recruiting-friendly staff.

A narrative emerged that those coaches were not good enough at preparing for games. Saban, needing to replace almost his entire staff, swung to the other end of the spectrum with this year’s hires.

Steve Sarkisian (offensive coordinator) and Kyle Flood (offensive line) have head coaching experience, while Charles Kelly (associate defensive coordinator/safeties) and Sal Sunseri (outside linebackers) are grizzled veterans.

At any other school, this level of staff turnover could create culture issues. At minimum, it would lead to less than 100 percent fluidity and confidence on the field.

Saban is so good at running his program that it’s plausible Alabama can get through staff volatility unscathed. But it adds another layer of complexity to this season.

Sixteen Alabama players have been selected to the preseason coaches All-SEC team, which was released Thursday.

That includes a league-high nine first-team selections.

Of the nine first-team selections for the Crimson Tide, five are on offense — quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, running back Najee Harris, wide receiver Jerry Jeudy and offensive linemen Alex Leatherwood and Jedrick Wills. The other Alabama players on the first-team are defensive lineman Raekwon Davis, linebacker Dylan Moses, cornerback Trevon Diggs and then wide receiver Jaylen Waddle as an all-purpose player and also as a return specialist.

In addition, four Tide players were second-team selections — wide receiver Henry Ruggs, safety Xavier McKinney, linebacker Anfernee Jennings and cornerback Patrick Surtain. There were also four third-team selections for Alabama — Waddle as a receiver, defensive back Shyheim Carter, defensive lineman LaBryan Ray and offensive lineman Matt Womack.

— “The focus this week has been on improving," Saban said.

— The second scrimmage will be a little more game-like.

— No new injuries, Saban said. Reserve defensive lineman Stephon Wynn, who got hurt during the scrimmage on Saturday, has a high ankle sprain and will be out another week or so. Nose tackle DJ Dale (sprained knee) is expected to return to practice on a limited basis tomorrow.

— Saban has been complimentary of Florida State grad transfer offensive lineman Landon Dickerson, who has been getting reps at both center and guard.

— Walk-on tight end Giles Amos “has done a nice job.” He could have a role this year, according to Saban. “Giles has done a good job taking advantage of the opportunity he has,” Saban said.

— How the young guys develop along the defensive line is going to be important, Saban said.

— Saban was asked about the toughest quarterback he’s ever gone against. Mentioned Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence as someone who’s played as well as anyone against Alabama in recent years.

Nick Saban provides injury updates on three Alabama D-linemen By Charlie Potter
quote:

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama head coach Nick Saban provided the latest injury updates on a trio of defensive linemen following the Crimson Tide’s Thursday’s fall camp practice session.

“We don’t really have any new injuries,” Saban said in a press conference. “We’ve got guys that are little nicked up or whatever. LaBryan Ray has come back and started practicing on a limited basis. We’ll see how he progresses. Stephon Wynn probably has a high-ankle sprain. He’ll probably be out for another week. We expect DJ Dale to start practicing on a limited basis tomorrow.”

Ray returned to the practice field Monday and is currently going through the acclimation period that, at latest check, has him in shoulder pads and shorts. The junior defensive end suffered an ankle over the summer that kept him off the field for Alabama’s first eight preseason practices.

Dale has missed the last six practices with a sprained knee. Dating back to the second half of spring drills, the early enrollee had been working at defensive tackle with the first-team defense.

Wynn missed much of last year’s fall camp due to injury. He sat out the first two games of his freshman season before getting cleared to play at Ole Miss and saw time in three games in the 2018 season before redshirting. Wynn had been working with the second-team defensive line.

Cornerback Nigel Knott has still not practiced this preseason because of “medical issues.” The last couple of practices, offensive lineman Pierce Quick has not been at practice. According to a source, the freshman suffered a minor ankle injury late last week but should be back next week.

Alabama will return to the practice field Friday, Aug. 16, at 9:30 a.m. CT for its final tuneup for its second of two scrimmages. That scrimmage will begin at 12:30 p.m. at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Saban: FSU transfer has unique perspective given Noles’ recent struggles
Updated Aug 15, 9:58 By Michael Casagrande | mcasagrande@al.com

quote:

In the age of graduate transfers, Landon Dickerson is the second to leave Florida State for Alabama.

Jake Coker
did it first after winning a title in Tallahassee as a backup, then another as a starter in Tuscaloosa. As an offensive lineman, Dickerson’s arrival didn’t come with quite the public fanfare, but he’s already competing for a prominent role in a positional group with strong talent returning.

Asked about his progress in the two weeks since joining the program, Saban on Thursday added another level of significance to Dickerson’s addition.

“I think he has a unique perspective coming from someplace that maybe,” Saban said, pausing for a moment, searching for the right way to word it.

“…the players didn’t have it quite as good as they have it around here. And I hope our players really understand what they have, the opportunities that they have and that their focus is really in the right place, which is on our team being good.”

The Seminoles went 22-17 in Dickerson’s three seasons with the program. The 5-7 mark last year was FSU’s first losing season since 1976 and broke the bowl participation streak that started in 1982. Things had slipped after Coker departed before the 2014 season as the Jimbo Fisher era trailed off.

Alabama’s played in the last four national title games, winning two.

“I think sometimes players don’t realize -- they get a little self-absorbed and they think about how things affect them,” Saban continued, “but really playing good and winning help players more than anything else. And the reason our players get all the accolades that they get and all the notice and attention that they get, is because they’re good players. But it’s also because we win.

“And I think players need to keep that in perspective because that’s a very important part of why we have so many players that get opportunities at the next level and get recognized for what they do here as a football player while they’re at the University of Alabama.”

Dickerson was the starting left guard for Florida State when it opened the 2017 season with a 24-7 loss to Alabama.

Dickerson has been with the first team at center the last few practices after getting some time at guard. He was a starter at times in all of his three FSU seasons, though injuries took him off the field in each of those years. He got a medical redshirt in 2018 giving him two seasons of eligibility remaining
