Guy has Ben Davis listed as a 1st team OLB. Who woulda thought?

I'm pulling for Ben Davis, but I'll be shocked if he holds onto that spot as a starter. Hope he proves me wrong and has a monster year!

On Chase opting out at LSU this late, my 1st thought is that he must not have liked what he saw from Brennan at QB and is worried his stock will drop if he plays. To me, this is bad news for LSU on multiple levels. TAMU may be our biggest threat in the West this year.

He will hold onto it until Anderson proves that he can defend the run and knows his assignments to the coaches' satisfaction. That may not happen this year. I do think Anderson is a 100% lock to be a fixture on passing downs from day 1 though. Every report that comes out describes him in glowing terms and Saban has already mentioned him by name. Saban never mentions freshmen by name unless they frick up off the field or show up ready to kick arse.

I was thinking King M. was the biggest threat to steal his spot, although I do think Anderson will come in on 3rd downs a ton.

That doesn't even matter. Burrow is gone, Brady is gone. No matter how good Brennan is, he's not going to put up those numbers, and neither will Chase. He has already reached his peak NFL draft value. There would be nowhere for him to go but down.
And I don't think this will become the norm. Unless your name is Trevor Lawrence or Justin Fields, it's pretty rare to not have room to improve your draft stock in your junior year. Also, Stingley comes to mind as a guy who could sit out 2021 and still be an early first rounder, but there are only a handful of guys in that boat.

I too am pulling for Davis, but if I'm being 100% honest, this concerns me a bit.

If I had to guess, which is all I can do, Ben is being given the chance to lead and hold the #1 spot. If he holds it, great. If he cannot hold it he did his part for the team of showing the younger guys the ropes.
I doubt he holds the spot for too long, but he earned the chance to try. I wish him success.

I mean who else are you going to put there? Mwikuta, Harris, and Parks aren't exactly what you'd call experienced and they're the only other non-true freshmen OLBs on the roster unless I'm forgetting someone. When you have a position group where you just lost your starter(s) and the bulk of the returning players are underclassmen it's not easy to justify putting them at the top of the depth chart until they prove that they deserve it. Experience rises to the top initially by default. They either keep it from their own merits or because no one else steps up to take it. Hopefully if Davis is our starting OLB at the beginning of the season it's because he earned it and not because the other guys failed to step up and take it.
