Which is why I was kinda wondering out loud, are we going to attack spread offenses? That's it to me. I've heard that Golding actually has an aggressive mode in his background. I'm not sure how much merit that rumor actually has, but if that is more his personality, I think that concept is just what the doctor ordered.
These aren't overly complicated offenses we are facing. I mean, a good freshman QB with talent around them can take these HUNH spread teams to the promised land. Basically they are doing it with speed and simplicity. Hurry up, make one read, and either run it or throw it to your first option. Even with the offensive linemen you simply don’t see the repetitive power-blocking, drive-blocking, and combo blocks that are required by every effective offensive linemen in the NFL and at Alabama a few years ago. LSU's OL last season wasn't supposed to be their strong point because of a lack of talent. What they were asked to do in the simplified spread concepts they ended up winning the best OL award in college football. On pure talent? No way they were even close to the best talent.
Ohio State stopped all the NFL stuff that Urban brought in last year and brought in a DC that stripped the defensive philosophy down to read and react and just let the talent eat. They were #1 in total defense for most of the season.
They were 53rd in total defense the year before. That was a defensive turnaround on the scale of LSU's offensive turnaround.
All this doesn't mean that Golding wasn't dealing with unusual circumstance last season but I still believe the answer to these spreads start with simple aggression that lets the defense read and react without a lot of complicated disguises.

encouraging quotes from that piece
Will Anderson will lead the team in sacks and I am here for it
quote:
“Obviously, when you’re young in the secondary, or at least inexperienced in the secondary, got to be able to create some pass rush,” Golding said. “You can’t do that always by sending five or six, because now you’re asking those young guys to cover really good players. Creating a four-man rush and still getting pressure on the pocket and containing the quarterback is obviously nice to have. So, I think both Chris and Ben have the ability to do that on base and regular downs, and then on third downs, we’re going to get our best guys on the field.”
quote:
“Some of these young guys might be really good edge pass rushers -- DPRs, so to say -- on third down,” Golding said. “We need to be able to find some package to let those guys do that. And no, we’re not going to ask them to learn the whole dime rabbits package and the whole nickel rabbits package because they’re not going to have the ability to do that this early.
“So, let’s ask them what they can do well. Let’s do that early, still continuing to learn the package, ultimately being able to learn it all. But let’s get those guys in spots for them to excel and be able to create pressure on the quarterback because I think that room has some special talent in it this year, especially, and obviously our older veteran guys being more on base down, on nickel down, and they’re still third down and bringing those guys with them.”

Okay, Golding! You got my attention right here!! Love this quote, I always felt if you have a talented kid, let him do what he knows and pick up the rest as he grows as a player.

Gonna guess we had some positives on the team and we are pausing football activities. Send all the students home and create a football bubble. It’s the only way forward. UNC already did this.

Regardless of whatever is coming it really has always been the best plan going forward. If students all were taking virtual classes the success rate of this football season would go up dramatically.

Lars just tweeted that he's talking about whatever "it" is on the Jay Barker Show right now.

Museum curator was arrested yesterday for child porn. It may have something to do with that.

They may try to keep them on campus as long as possible bc refunding room and board is a big blow to the university

I'm listening to Lars talk about "it" on the Jay Barker show, and here's the deal:
He won't say specifically what "it" is, but he says it's related to COVID and the University will make an announcement in the next 24-48 hours or on Monday. Sounds like there was an outbreak at the school and the school may be considering going all online.
They made clear that football is NOT shutting down.

In other words, the tuition checks have now cleared?

If there is a huge outbreak, what would you rather them do? Based on timing, it has nothing to do with checks being cleared
It has way more to do with students not giving a shite about the rona

College students have no one to blame but themselves. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. You can’t live like there’s no virus in the middle of a pandemic and not see consequences. Hope they enjoyed their one week of careless behavior.

They'll probably continue to enjoy it if they are allowed to stay in the dorms. Virtual classes doesn't mean the students get booted off of campus, it just means they won't be taking in-person classes. They'll still be in Tuscaloosa doing what college kids do because, quite frankly, the vast majority of them won't get seriously ill if they do catch the virus.

I posted this in recruiting but I don't want to derail it.........
I'm currently working with the 6/30 financials of multiple schools and dealing with the effects of their Spring 2020 semester shutdowns and I can tell you exactly what is happening in Tuscaloosa (and across the country)..........
They know once kids start classes that they are stuck. They will move things online and the kids will inevitably stick with it, because they are already started and because they've already paid. That money is 100% going to stay with the University, and if they had said "online" in July or early August kids would NOT have all paid. I'm not going to say this was 100% about money, but it absolutely is a factor. I'm sure that most of the upper management truly does think they can provide a high quality product virtually as well, so I'm not trying to imply this was some fraudy scheme.
As for room and board, like Bear said, they will refund that money - as well as meal money. In the spring schools ran a simple "what % of the amount you paid for did you receive" (basically # of days used/# of days generally used) and gave back the unused portion. This will obviously be something like 90-95% for the Fall semester. However, what they will in all liklihood do is offer to "credit it" to the student accounts, which will not require them to refund cash. Kids who plan to stay will accept that, and the University keeps their cash flow in decent shape. I'm guessing they hate doing that, and it will hurt, but they knew they could survive without a semester of room/board. They could not survive (without draconian cuts and cash infusions from debt/govt grants) for a semester at 20% of their normal tuition revenues.

I just conservatively estimated maybe 10000 live on campus. Not sure , but at 13,000 per that is 130 million dollars ... big blow to send them home right now plus local businesses ... not good

Yea - this is not a decision they are going to take lightly. It's a multi-hundred million dollars they are giving up.
Big state universities are set up to turn like a wheel. They don't have huge rainy day funds "in case" they have to shut it all down for 1/2 a year (nor should they, to be frank). This would be a major, major blow.
