The NBA and NBA Player's Union funded the creation of a saliva-based COVID test with Yale that is cheaper and quicker than current options.

Hopefully this is legit and it will help college athletics as well.

Seems to be considered very good news by epidemiologists. And with a good bit of time to get it up and running before basketball starts.

I think there are a decent amount of reasons to be cautiously optimistic about basketball.

It's great news! I've read the specifics. There is no "kit", it's a test Yale developed using materials available in most any lab, so no availability issues, it's cheap, so you can test often, and it's accurate; high 80's to low 90's percent accuracy.

Good. Less of a problem for us.

Arkansas will still be pretty good.

Good point here by an industry source:

‘I think the leagues that have the resources will already have a plan in place (for bubbles). The bigger challenge will be for the smaller leagues.

‘How does the MAAC or NEC create a bubble?’

UNC doesn't seem to be handling this very well. Did they test all the kids before allowing them on campus? Did they lay down the law about mask and social distancing? I'm just curious because so far, I haven't heard of any other large school having this much of a problem with Covid. There have been outbreaks, but usually connected with wrong behavior.

I’m a tad skeptical that the medical people just now came to that conclusion.

Is it also possible they just started the semester a little earlier than most? I honestly don’t know the answer to that.

At Alabama *on campus* the mask wearing has been pretty good so far. A fair amount of the freshmen even wearing them outside. Not sure if the upperclassmen will be as enthusiastic.

Off campus, obviously not so much.

The dorms on any campus are going to be a mess, to some degree.

NCAA Senior Vice President of Basketball Dan Gavitt’s statement on preparation for 2020-21 basketball season

August 17, 2020 3:00pm

As we prepare for the 2020-21 college basketball season, we have exercised patience and discipline in monitoring the effects of COVID-19 and making decisions regarding the season. We have learned a great deal over the course of the summer, and with health and safety being our priority, we have developed and studied contingency plans for alternatives to the scheduled Nov. 10 start date.

In the coming weeks, the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Basketball Oversight Committees will take the lead with me in a collaborative process of finalizing any recommendations for consideration by the NCAA Division I Council for the start of the college basketball season. By mid-September, we will provide direction about whether the season and practice start on time or a short-term delay is necessitated by the ongoing pandemic.

We recognize that we are living and operating in an uncertain time, and it is likely that mid-September will be just the first milestone for many important decisions pertaining to the regular season and the NCAA basketball championships. While circumstances may warrant flexibility resulting in a different and perhaps imperfect season, the ultimate goal is to safely provide student-athletes and teams with a great college basketball experience.
