Pinckney's Six RBIs Carry Alabama Baseball to Blowout Win Over Texas A&M in Game 2 (SI)

The Crimson Tide emphatically took the second game against the Aggies this weekend despite two weather delays.

College Station is about 2 hours Northeast of me. My weather channel is saying it is going to start storming tonight around 10 and will last until Tuesday.

We may not get a chance to play tomorrow if that is accurate.

Should’ve played two today if that’s accurate.

Tomorrow’s game is slated for 3 pm too - spring semester is over so I’m not sure how that would play into ‘get away’ day if there’s a weather delay. I’m sure Bama’s going to want to get the game in.

Can anyone breakdown the scholarship limit at Bama vs other schools like LSU. I am trying to understand this. Is it the reason we cannot get field a championship caliber baseball team year in and year out?

All teams get 11.75 scholarships to divide between players. The least a player can get is a quarter scholarship. Basically nobody gets a full ride. Many players don't get anything. It is the same at all schools.

At schools with Hope scholarships, instate students can get a full tuition scholarship and those who live in state can get it after a year, if I am not mistaken.

NIL can come along and basically cover shortfalls in money if a program can get people to give to that.

I don’t see why baseball cannot have like 20-30 scholarships with the revenue it can bring.

Since you asked…

A soliloquy by Alabama_Fan:

Here is an excellent 40 min documentary on the baseball scholarship topic in general (that unfortunately features our former coach). Uneven: College Baseball's Scholarship Issue

College baseball is limited to 11.7 scholarships shared across up to 32 of the 40 players on the team (up from 27 players on scholarship which was the previous limit). So states with lottery college scholarships can either entice students to stay home which allows the student to potentially have state lottery funding as well as a partial scholarship for baseball or allows the program to offer out of state students a higher fraction of a baseball scholarship. Then some universities (like in Mississippi and Arkansas) have lenient policies when it comes to offering out of state students in state tuition. Bama doesn’t do that. Vandy, because it’s private, doesn’t have to disclose but I suspect close to all 40 players are getting some form of financial support beyond the 11.7 NCAA scholarships.

Some will argue NIL evens the field but if you’re a recruit from Louisiana and you have the option of going to, for example, Ole Miss or Bama. And for argument’s sake, both schools offer you a 25% scholarship and your NIL value is $40,000. Would you rather go to Ole Miss on in state tuition and have some NIL spending money left over or go to Bama and use all your NIL money to pay out of state tuition?

Some will argue auburn is in the same boat but it’s my understanding they have committed significantly more resources to baseball than Bama (I don’t study them so I’m not sure if it’s in the form of endowed scholarships, NIL, or what).

One of the major reasons I’d love to see conferences break away from the NCAA is so they can give more athletes more funding and get away from ridiculous scholarship limits in baseball and softball (and swimming!). Bama’s currently at a bottom of the conference disadvantage in baseball, which makes this collection of talent we have all the more impressive. I know some folks won’t agree with this perspective and I’m OK with that.

Another potentially unpopular perspective I have is I think Byrne is between a rock and a hard place when it comes to bringing in a high dollar baseball coach (which I would love BTW). Softball is under the same scholarship limits as baseball (although they don’t carry as many players so it’s not exactly the same). It’s been recent history since Murphy made as much as the baseball coach yet look at the relative success of and demand for softball vs baseball. Murph and Bo were paid roughly the same this year (I believe Bo made more when he first arrived). Softball leads the nation in attendance and has for years. Softball has made the post season for decades. Baseball, well… let’s just say, doesn’t have the same demand nor recent success. It could be argued that Murph is among the highest paid softball coaches in the conference. Bo was among the lowest in baseball. I still can imagine it’s an awkward situation for GB as neither is a revenue generating sport.

I’m not sure anyone on the board wants baseball success more than I want it. (Full disclosure: I want that for all Bama sports). I’ll be in Hoover cheering for a miracle run. I’m giddy at the faint prospect of hosting a regional. I love (love love) the fight in this team and would love nothing more than to see baseball elevated to the upper echelon in the SEC. It’s not going to be easy. Especially with the funding disparity across the SEC. But I have a dream. Thanks for asking.

Good.

Just checked the weather app and it appears the storms are holding off until tomorrow morning, but get this game in before something changes.

Need this win today.

Hope the boys really like their mommas and have extra motivation to bring one home today.

Win this one and .500 in SEC becomes the most likely scenario with a chance to have a winning conference record with a sweep next weekend!

Still no word on a first pitch time?

ETA: Just check the SEC website. Says the game is scheduled to start at 7 PM.

UPDATE:

First pitch tentatively set for 7 pm. Field conditions will be re-evaluated at approximately 4 pm with the best interest of student-athlete safety in mind.
