The big question usually comes up with is it any way related or discovered at your current job.

Our work wants people to come up with big ideas, but they want to own them

Probably neither without a contract. Otherwise they'll probably steal it.

But it's situational. Tell us about your idea here first. You can trust us to keep quiet.

Has anyone gone through the same thing or family and friends or co-workers?

Before you talk with anyone, including a patent attorney….draw up a detailed diagram, etc. detailing the invention/idea. Sign and date it . Then send it to yourself via certified mail requiring your signature. Then store it away & never open (as in, don’t break the seal) unless you need to prove it was your original idea.
It’s not a replacement for a patent, but it offers an initial layer of protection. You can start the patent process, then talk with others. Just protect the idea with non-disclosure agreements w/ attached diagrams containing signature lines and dates.
Not an attorney…I’ve just dealt with stuff like that before. Hope this tidbit of info helps.

No problem. If I can help in the way of free advice, just let me know.
And If anyone’s unwilling to sign a non-disclosure agreement, walk away.

A majority of my family are in the legal profession but I would go outside the family.

Don’t want any hidden things written in the documents
