Is winning tomorrow night a top three all-time victory, regardless of how it happens?

Lot of weed smells around the hotel…I thought they said they left Holloway at home.

Too soon?

High is 40 degrees tomorrow after being in the 70s today, so feels just like being in Bama in March.

I do want to ask this board.... Where would a Michigan win Friday rank in all time Alabama wins? We have beaten 1 seeds before, and we have won other Sweet 16 (and one more Elite 8) games before.. Personally, I'd probably currently rank our all time wins as the one over #1 UNC, then the Clemson win to make the Final Four, then the Syracuse win to make the Elite 8 decades ago, then the win that same year over #1 seed Stanford.

I’ve been thinking about the same thing for 3 days, and my conclusion is this would be our “best” win in program history (not most important or even “biggest,” as that was to get to our first F4). I can only speak from Gottfried on, but here’s why I think it would be the best win talking the other contenders.

2004 #8 Bama vs. #1 Stanford - I remember going into this game thinking that not only could we win it given our style and 3pt shooting, but that we could take out Syracuse too because they played a 2/3 zone that we would rain 3s against and were a terrible matchup for them. Even when we got down 17 points as our shots weren’t falling, I distinctly remember thinking we were still in the game if we could start hitting 3s due to our style vs theirs. We did, and it played out exactly as I was hoping.

2004 #8 Bama vs #5 Syracuse to make 1st Elite 8 - not sure what the line was going into the game, but I remember thinking we should be favored given the matchup. 2/3 zone against a good 3 point shooting team is usually a disaster…think they even tried to switch to man to man for a couple possessions and looked awful (kind of like when we try to play zone for a possession every once in awhile).

2024 #4 Bama vs #1 UNC to get to 2nd ever Elite 8 - this was a huge win, but we were only a 4.5 point underdog and many of us board members were pumped about the matchup. UNC wasn’t even top 5 in odds to win the NCAAT to start the tourney at +1700 and finished 9th in Kenpom (one of the worst 1 seeds in the last decade). As a comparison, Mich was +450 prior to the tourney and is now the favorite and the line is more than double the UNC line.

2024 #4 Bama vs. #6 Clemson to get to first ever Final Four - while this is Bama’s most important win IMO, and maybe even “Biggest” given it broke the F4 drought, we were the favorite and higher seed in the game. Hard for me to say our best win is over a team we were favored by 3.5 against and seeded 2 spots higher. An upset of the tourney favorite when the line opened in double digits would be a substantially better win all things considered IMO.

Heading into this game, it feels very much like the following NCAAT matchups:

2025 Duke
2024 UConn
2004 UConn

I watched the 2024 UConn game in Phoenix and it was great fun. We gave them the biggest scare and had a 2 point lead with 12 minutes to go. Ultimately, we couldn’t quite hang but that game was competitive for 30 of the 40 minutes before we lost by double digits (think it was 15). We couldn’t really hang with 2025 Duke or 2004 UConn at all. If we pulled this upset, it would be ranked on the Best win of the program in my book…especially if we could follow it up with a win on Sunday. If we made Indianapolis this year, would be very hard to think this win over Mich wouldn’t go down as the best (unless we win in Indianapolis of course).

I've seen Michigan play on TV 3 times this season other than the NCAA tournament. The first 1/2 of the year they looked like a Saban version basketball squad - they were physically mauling everyone as well as dropping 3-point buckets all over the place. They absolutely looked unbeatable. Purdue beat them in the Big 10 tourney by spreading the ball around using great passing, driving and kicking out to an open player. It looked like Purdue wore Michigan out physically - plus MI didn't hit their usual number of 3's. So to beat the big beasts Alabama has to run - run - run, then pass effectively all around the perimeter while shooting at least 40% from behind the line. Then get back on defense - get in their face defensively, like they did with Texas Tech. There is no way Alabama can match up with their size, even if Williamson undergoes a metamorphosis and roughs up their 7' 4" bruiser. I think Bama's backcourt is far superior, and can do damage by moving the ball constantly and wearing Michigan down. That is what Purdue did. It also helps if MI has an off-night shooting from outside.

Purdue also had the benefit of getting Michigan after playing multiple games in a row. We will get them after being fully rested. We almost have to hope rust plays a factor for them if they didn’t take us seriously, but certainly pushing the tempo is something we’ll try to do.

Have to shoot very well and hope for some breaks to go our way (like the NCAA telling the refs they don’t want an all B10 final 4 with no SEC teams in E8…hurts viewership. With Illinois, Purdue, and Iowa already in, maybe we get some favorable calls?? I know, I know…let a man dream, though).

Two other ways to defend a dominant post player. When out sized and out matched, either try to match the physicality or put a more athletic, agile and quicker player on them. But you still have to defend the perimeter well and try to make the inlet pass harder. You want the post player to have to adjust to a weak pass. This throws off their timing and it gives the quicker defender an opportunity to get a hand on it.

Okafor was a 3 star who almost went to Vandy. Calhoun was among the goat that came to development.

Heart says we are going to pull it off. Brain says it will look similar to Arkansas-Arizona last night.

Same.

We have some of the same deficiencies Arkansas has and Michigan has some of the same strengths AZ has. Hoping for the 1 out of 10 event to happen, though!

I think we can play better defense than Arkansas. Trouble is we don’t know which team shows up.
Playing Big10 teams we absolutely need a big and tall frontline. Seems everyone of their good teams has a couple of 7+ footers with skill. If we lose this game Oats better spend his summer scouting European basketball courts looking for Goliaths.
We can’t keep hitting this wall every year.
