A seven-run first inning set up Alabama softball for a series-opening win Thursday night in Gainesville, holding off a late Florida rally to win, 7-4.
Alabama's (31-16, 8-8 SEC) got off to a fast start against Florida (37-10, 9-7 SEC), plating seven runs on four hits and two errors in the top of the first as 12 batters came to the plate in the big inning. The Gators chipped away at the lead but the Crimson Tide avoided the big inning, holding a 7-3 advantage heading to the bottom of the seventh. With two out and a runner at third, a hard-hit single up the middle scored a run for the Gators and a walk in the next at-bat brought the potential tying run to the plate. A high fly ball to left ended the rally and secured the 7-4 win for Alabama.
The seven runs scored in the first inning are the most for the Tide in an inning in SEC play since an eight-run fourth inning vs. Texas A&M on April 3, 2021. Audrey Vandagriff and Riley Valentine each had two hits, with Vandagriff driving in three RBIs on a first-inning double. Jocelyn Briski (12-10) earned the win, pitching 4.1 innings with Catelyn Riley earning the save behind her with 2.2 relief innings.

Pretty interesting that both Alabama baseball and Alabama softball teams have identical conference records at the moment: 8-8.
But, the baseball team is trending way down, and it appears the ladies in softball are trending upward.

Run ruled and gave up 12 runs is an embarrassment of epic proportions.

Alabama, this is odd to say, just doesn't have good enough pitching. If their 2 good arms aren't on lock, it is going to be an adventure because the rest of the arms are midweek starters at best.

Girls took 1-0 lead, gave it up to 2-1 in the B6, then fought back to 3-2 in T7! 3 outs from taking the series!

Bad defense is really hurting us today. Runners on the corner with 1 out.

2B defense just cost the game (and catcher dropped pop up). Missed 3 straight plays…smh

I got home to see the bottom of the 7th and see Bama SB lose another game in the late innings. What a shite show.

Pitching just can’t handle the late game situation no matter what Murph does. Just a major talent deficit.

The 2 wild pitches in the 6th were bad, but the 7th was more on the defense than pitching IMO. No excuse to drop a pop up right behind the plate, not even get a glove on 3 balls all playable or at least should have been kept in the infield, and not even getting an out after gloving a ball right next to 1st base when clearly it wasn’t going to be a double play.

Apparently softball and baseball teams have same infield coach because they would win these games if it weren’t for errors.

Little league players know better.

This is fair. Just felt like Riley was constantly getting behind in counts and forced into obvious “going to throw it over the plate” situations in the 7th. Fouts would do this but she had stuff to force bad swings that these girls simply don’t approach.

Lot of mistakes that lost the game today. For instance, reliable Kali Heivilin had a rough day. She was always a step off and seemed to miss everything that came her way. The wild pitches and throws drive me crazy. It's like the whole team loses control in close games and plays like little leaguers. They don't seem to have enough confidence in themselves to make the critical plays. I was told today that I should just pull for Bama to lose out, miss hosting a regional and miss the playoffs. Apparently, some fans think this is the only way to get rid of Murphy. I don't think he's going anywhere regardless of the outcome of this season, unless he decides to retire. I told them I could NEVER pull against Alabama under any circumstances and no true fan would. Hoping these ladies can put it together and win at least 2 out of 3 of these last two remaining series. Roll Tide Roll!

Murphy is leaving when he wants to leave. If losing out gets him to leave then there you go but I don't think Byrne is pushing him out the door. He's got to much goodwill within the sport for this to be a good move for the AD. It may actually make hiring his replacement needlessly difficult.
