When I started the enrolement was about 14K. When I finished is wasa little under 16K. Instate enrolement capped out in the mid to late 1990's at 18 ~ 20 K and has held pretty steady at that level. It is now easier to get scholarship money if you are from out of stae than in state.
Almost all of the growth since the mid to late 1990"s has been from out of state.
As for easier to get scholarship money from out of state than in state...I have 3 daughters. The older two had a 0.1 higher (4.3 vs 4.2) GPA than my youngest. The older two got much better money from Auburn than from Alabama. Auburn recruited them much harder than Alabama did. They were both in state. They both chose Auburn. My youngest daughter got much better money from Alabama than from Auburn. My wife is an Auburn Alum. The youngest grew up going to see her sisters at Auburn with her mom. She is now a freshman at Auburn. For her the choice had nothing to do with money. She wanted to have the experience her mom and sisters had.
Alabama got what they wanted, just none of it from me.

I don't know. It's pretty easy to get some get scholarship money from UA based on this link: LINK
Looks like at minimum your daughters should have received $4K in scholarships assuming they had at least a 24 on the ACT. Compare that to Auburn's in-state scholarships seen here: LINK
The same stats I showed above for UA doesn't get you any scholarship at AU. Based on those two links UA is multitudes more generous to in-state students than AU for scholarships.

several years ago it was some absurd number like 66 per cent.
It is about 58% OOS. In-state grew about 4% last year. 42k enrolled is a ridiculous # for UA. The physical and academic infrastructure in Tuscaloosa and at the University cannot support that very well.

Great. How long before they go home?

It's been that way for since it broke 30k to be quite honest.

I remember when all this was just open fields.

I know it was 10 years ago but at Alabama, my older daughters got an offer of $6K a year plus $4K per year (Bryant scholly) as in state and Auburn beat it.The year before my oldest, my nephew (at Alabama) from out of state got a full ride with the same GPA but 1 point higher ACT (granted, he was a National Merit Scholar per SAT and the girls were not).
My youngest (out of state) got $20K a year plus the $4K (Bryant) but chose Auburn at $16K per year.
I did not bother looking at the links, I just know what was offered was offered. Their 529 accounts covered the rest plus grad school for all 3.

The national merit scholar path is how you get big bucks from UA. Been that way since the aughts. Definitely will be the focus for our kids in their high school years. Best way to get schools competing for your kid’s enrollment.

Yep, all 3 of my nephews got full ride from 3 different schools (Vandy, Alabama, & Covenant) based on being National Merit Scholars.

I'm not doubting you at all, as UA was way more focused on out-of-state money for a long time but they have re-focused on in-state a lot more recently. I think their efforts are starting to pay off as more and more in-state students are enrolling. UA and AU are practically enrolling the same amount of in-state students every year now.
I hate that you have to deal with so much AU in your family though. They are a strange cult that thinks their college experience is superior than anyone else's that goes to any other University.

I can tell you that student housing options in Tuscaloosa are far superior to what Auburn has. Auburn is currently tearing down some of the old dorms to upgrade. Lots of freshmen are having to stay in off campus locations under Auburn contracts and the off campus sites are nicer than the on campus options.
Auburn is just now doing the rebuild/expansion of housing that Alabama started 10 to 15 years ago.

The school had a heavy California population before Kiffin or Lupoi, the push for the whole OOS growth started in 2003 when UA started the OOS recruiting program.
IIRC the largest states that weren't bordered with Alabama (i.e. Georgia) were California and Texas. Also a lot of Chicago kids specifically. We had a family friend that was a recruiter in Florida and she would host events with probably 10-20% of the graduating class showing up.
The money was a huge factor, plus once you were in Alabama for a year you could shift to in-state tuition if I remember right. I paid more in fraternity dues than my tuition because of the generous aid.

Yep, sorority cost for the girls did/are eating me alive. Now that the youngest is enrolled, I am looking at land to build and move back to Alabama. The youngest gets to keep the scholy money but apply it at in-state rates her second year on..

Alabama went heavy after Texas students under Dr. Whitt because of their top 10 rule in state.

Would you actually choose your college experience to be living in your parents’ basement rather than living your late teens, early twenties around some of the most beautiful women in the world? I had a blast in Tuscaloosa back in the mid-70’s, and I wish I could re-enroll today.

New Alabama president Peter Mohler on "Hey Coach" about record 42,360 enrollment: "I am concerned that if we get significantly larger, we're gonna lose a lot of that culture, a lot of that faculty-to-student ratio, the stories. We want to make sure we're big and big enough to be sustainable and make these big bets, but I want to make sure we don't lose that culture that is always been a part of our great university, and to make sure everyone knows each other on campus and you can have a great relationship with your faculty and staff.
"We are asking those questions -- do we want to start thinking about slowing down our growth so we don't lose a lot of that culture?"

I've never understood this either. Whenever I ask my Auburn friends what makes the Auburn experience so different from literally every other college, the answer is always the same vague, "you just had to be there."
My ex was the same way. She dropped out yet still treated Auburn like it was holy ground. Every few months she'd want to take a day trip there and without fail, it was always the same routine... eat at a shite restaurant, shop for t-shirts in the boutique stores in their downtown strip, take pictures in the little courtyard where that orange building with the clock tower for Instagram and Toomers corner, then head home. That was it. That was the magic.
