Just wanted to give a shout out to Pettway. He did an outstanding job recruiting Butler. I was told a few weeks ago that Butler would probably end up at UVA. I’m not sure exactly what transpired between then and yesterday’s commitment, but it sure looks like Pett came through for us in crunch time yet again.

I think there's some sort of open practice for Tide Pride members tonight. Anyone going?

I have an Auburn buddy who is a big basketball fan (one of the rare ones....lol) who has a connection inside both the Bama and Auburn basketball programs that said he's heard that Bama and even Auburn have nothing to worry about with regards to the FBI/Person/Eubanks situations. TFWIW

om what I've seen so far, Petty might go higher than Sexton.

Sure, he might, but Sexton is at a level right now where his floor is the bottom of the 1st round.

Petty will have to prove it. Sexton already has (in the minds of NBA people).

I think it's more in the minds of fans. And I think it's largely because he had better hype video producers. I don't mean any disrespect to Sexton. Petty just looks like the better player at this point, to me. That could change, and either way, they're both future NBA guys.

2019 5-star DJ Jeffries

He went into a little more detail in speaking about Alabama, as he said, “My family and I like Alabama because family is a big thing to us, so we have built a good relationship with them. We’ve got a good relationship their staff and I think they’ll be a top program in the upcoming years.”

The 2019 class could end up being our best ever. Watford, Wiseman, and Jeffries are all top 20 five-star players and they're all considering Bama. That's just to name a few

It's hard for me to look at these two guys and think that Petty is the better player based on their performance in HS alone. Sure Sexton had some good highlights, but he also averaged over 30 ppg against both HS and EYBL competition. He set the scoring record for the EYBL and was the MVP of the USA team.

Most of what you're probably basing this off of is the Canada games and what the rumors are around the NBA open practice. That's a small sample size in the Canada games and even if Sexton looked like the top 10 pick most peg him as, he's not going to be the standout when he already has that reputation. Petty opened the eyes of a lot of Scouts because he was a guy they didn't expect to look like a lottery pick or even a first rounder.

I like both guys and have even hyped Petty to be better than his ranking, but right now I think Sexton is our best player. He's just proven more than Petty has to this point.

I will say, if Herb Jones stood out like what was reported and really is flirting with 6'10 (in shoes), he may end up being another guy we may have to replace. And in no way would I be upset about that.

If we have more than one drafted....most likely means we had a hell of a season.

I love both guys also, but I disagree with saying Sexton has done more than Petty at this point. Petty was the 2 time Mr Basketball in Alabama while leading his team to 3 State Championships. He was ranked in the top 20 of players in his position as early as his 10th grade year. Sexton is a much shorter proven product. IMO, Sexton will be flashier, but when its crunch time, Petty will be taking the shots.

Random Observations from Tip Off Club/Tide Pride Open Practice and BBQ

The team had a two hour practice and then came and practiced for 45 min in front of the crowd.

- Sexton came in with a ripped practice jersey. Had been ripped down the middle.
- When they played any 5 on 5 drills they were in mixed groups. Clearly not starters versus next 5 ever.
- Did some offense versus air with different ball handlers.
- Armond made an impressive Kyrie-type reverse layup in traffic.
- Reese Looked good from 3. Also, looked more the part to me but could have been fooled by the more mature haircut haha.
-Avery noted that we were last in the league in taking charges last year.
-Riley sat out of practice but everyone else participated.
-When we got to 5 on 5 drills Sexton blew by everybody for a layup in the half court at least 4 times.
-Sexton floated one over hall too after a blow by.
-Giddens has nice touch on his jumper. Made a 10 foot fadeaway look smooth.
-Did one period of special situations. Collin bailed the white team out on a last second step-back 17 footer on the white's possession. Then he ripped it from Braxton on the crimson's possession. (Avery called a foul but it was a Head coach's foul not a legitimate one).
-Herb is going to get minutes. He's going to defend and he looked like he belonged.
-They didn't play much 5 on 5 so it was hard to tell much more than that.

I AM basing it off of what I've seen in Canada and practice. But, I think Petty has better size and is a better shooter. I agree Sexton looked great in all the film I saw of him pre-Bama, so maybe he just wasn't clicking yet this summer. But, I do think his game is going to be more difficult to translate to college than Petty's. As far as the NBA open practice, I didn't hear any surprise about Petty. The talk was about (my long-time sleeper pick) Herb Jones.

But, either way, I'm not trying to start another Jalen vs. Tua situation on the board. I think they're both going to be great players. I just keep seeing all the talk about Sexton being a one-and-done as a foregone conclusion while I, personally, think Petty may be more NBA ready. We'll see. I'm just excited about the possibilities this year. This SHOULD be a very good team before the year is over.
