quote:I was referring to Oats being asked the question, but regardless, the #1 priority a coach AND his team have during this time is to stay 100% focused on the GAME and the things needed to be successful. Those comments have literally NOTHING to do with that priority. I'm not saying that we're now doomed, but I'm saying that ANY distraction that can be avoided, should be....it's not a smart move on JQ's part!
I don’t think we’re such a fragile bunch that our performance is going to be affected because Quinerly is asked a question at a press conference.

In response to my best team ever question, is the consensus top 3?
1) '76
2) '87

I’m not trying to minimize our players commitment to winning, but on the day this story first came out they probably weren’t 100% focused on the game. They were probably like at least 20% focused on Hulu.
Oats I’m sure was watching film like a madman. The players were probably just bored. I’m sure their focus is starting to ramp up a lot as the week goes on.

I guess that would have to be it, with the caveat that it's hard to completely judge this team until the tournament results are in.
But even if we had a bad tournament, we still accomplished more in the regular season than the 2002 team did (who lost in the second round).
The Elite 8 run was my favorite Alabama basketball memory, but that obviously wasn't a great regular season team.
The 91 and 92 teams were really good, but in retrospect the 92 team didn't really end up with a whole lot to show for it (third in the West, lost in the SEC tournament final, lost in the second round of the NCAAs, etc.)

yea that '92 team should've been better
my roommate at UA was a bookie. He left town that weekend and paid me to take the bets. He told me to layoff some of the Ala bets he knew would be coming vs UNC in the 2nd round. I knew we had zero chance and held them all.
He was pretty happy upon return. I got a nice bonus.

He didn't pick the date. It was a national news story that was trending everywhere yesterday. A player from Rutgers basically started the movement on Twitter and a lot of players from all of the country made posts supporting the cause and giving their own experience.
JQ typing one paragraph about a topic that directly impacted him and that he's passionate about does not make him immature. That kid loves basketball and wants to win games as much as anybody. He's not offending anyone, he's just voicing his opinion on the subject. I support him in it, because it's a stupid NCAA rule anyway, but i'm sure there are plenty out there that just want him to "shut up and dribble".

I am feeling good about our bracket. Worst case scenario we have to beat UConn then Texas and we're in the elite 8 where we would probably play a Michigan team playing their worst bball of the year.
Not saying that UConn, Texas, Michigan or whoever we have to play will be easy I just think that it sets up pretty good for us and that it's very doable if we play how we did in the SECT or better.

Yea - the fact that we have 1 easy game is more than most in this tournament. Once we get to the Round of 32 we'll be playing teams we could lose to. That's how the tournament works.
I agree, though. If we play ball like we did in Nashville we have a very legitimate chance at getting to the Final Four, which still feels crazy to say. Doesn't mean we will do it, but it's certainly reasonable to look at our bracket and feel just as good about getting out of it as anybody else in it.

The funniest thing about this whole situation is that Auburn fans switched to being a “basketball school” because their football program cooled off and now we are gonna kick their arse in both lmaooo

92 was a frustrating team and should have done better than they did. I'd argue the 95 team with McDyess was playing better basketball at the end of the season than the 92 team was. Who knows what they could have done in the Sweet 16 had they gotten past a good Oklahoma State team. Pretty sure that Ok State team went on to the Final 4. Bama didn't have that great of a regular season in 95 though.

My memory of 1995 is McDyess went to another level towards the end of the season.
And that's sort of backed up by a few of the game logs. He only averaged 14 and 10 for the regular season, which is good but not insane for a #2 pick in the draft.
In the tournament he went for:
39 and 19 in round 1 vs Penn
22 and 17 in round 2 vs OK State
39 and 19, jeez.

Look at how good our region is
Posted on 3/18/21 at 1:00 pm to mistaken4193
Looks like half the teams are anywhere from decent to really good all around, two are bad, and the rest are flawed. Which seems about right to me. It's a tough region, but y'all have to keep in mind that these teams aren't picked from random. Outside of the occasional bid stealer and winners of terrible conferences pretty much everyone is good, which is why they made the field.

He also had a big game or two in the SEC tournament. I think we lost in the semis of the SEC tournament to Arkansas. May have been the finals, I can't remember. So we got bumped from both tournaments by eventual Final 4 teams that year.
And I was thinking he scored 39 against Oklahoma St for some reason, but now I recall that game being a low scoring slug fest between him and Roy Rogers and Bryant Reeves - Big Country.

My vague memory of that game was that McDyess was in foul trouble, but I googled it and it wasn't that - he hurt his knee.
Had to sit out for 4-5 minutes of the second half and then wasn't as effective after he came back in.

McDyess would have been awesome under Oats IMO

Only other thing I remember about that game was Passink getting burned late in the game and Ok State hitting a 3 that put the game away. I think the final margin was 5 or 6, but we had cut the lead to one, or maybe tied it, then they hit that 3.

I don't have a Tuscaloosa News subscription so I can't even read any of their articles. I was following along with the story yesterday on Twitter. And this is also something that JQ has talked about in the past, so clearly it is important to him.
