I hate to say it but If another school were doing this I have a feeling the sentiment would be different. I don’t know enough about the NCAA rules but based on what I’ve read here, Unless Oates knows something about a transfer out that we don’t know, this is a shitty thing to do.
Purely for discussion sake...
Why do you think it’s shitty?
Playing devil’s advocate...these players want to leave at will, get paid, and treated like employees. Isn’t this how companies are run? When the boss’s arse is on the line, won’t he generally do what’s best for himself/the company?
I personally don’t think college athletes should be treated like employees, and I don’t think Oats is the kind of guy to force someone out. I do think he is brutally honest with players and won’t sugarcoat things if they’re not likely to contribute- a la Davis and Forbes, and give them the opportunity to seek a place where they can.

Davis and Forbes were recruited by the previous staff. There's simply no good faith argument that cutting Wilson loose after he has signed his LOI is anything but incredibly shitty, and if Gurley commits and then KAH or Miles hit the portal that'd be twice in two years that a freshman this staff recruited is pushed out the door. Everyone understands that recruiting can be a really nasty business, but that's still not a great look and it'll be used against us with future recruits.

This is a bad look, that’s a bad look, this makes us look bad, blah blah blah. This isn’t a pre-k classroom, this is the real world. Oats has 13 scholarships to use, and he should give the best 13 basketball players he can those scholarships, regardless of whose feelings get hurt, regardless of whose scholarship gets pulled. Dear God some people are so soft. It’s the same situation in the workplace.
In 2017, if Avery gave the 13th scholarship to Galin Smith, but then Collin Sexton wanted to come here, you drop Galin. It’s the business. No one in the world wouldn’t do the exact same thing, f*ck what people think about it. They don’t like Bama anyway.

So with no basketball to feed on, we resort to cannibalism ??

I'm with you on the LOI guys, because they weren't even given a chance to prove themselves. I'm a little more okay with Freshman being shown the door, especially if you don't see them having any playing time in the near future. In most cases a split is mutually beneficial. Hawkins was never going to see PT here and it would have been cruel to have him riding the bench another 3 years when he can go have himself an actual collegiate career. He was in a similar position to Rojas this off-season. Transfer or sit the pine for the rest of your career.
However, I don't believe Miles or KAH should be shown the door this early. Miles more so based on potential and talent, and KAH more based on messing up the Canada pipeline we have going right now.

You are the last person to call anyone soft. You routinely want to fire everyone because the game isn't going perfectly at the given time. Just saying.

I will hate it if any guy is forced out and didn’t want to actually leave, but I’m also of the mindset that I just want Alabama basketball to do whatever it takes to consistently win and be a top program. Last year from January on was awesome. Let’s make that a yearly occurrence

To be honest, we're in a pretty good predicament if this what we're worried about

I’ve got a different theory that may be total bullshite but maybe not. Where are we deepest? Guard. Where are we most experienced? Guard. We’ve only got 2 true natural ball handlers in Q and JD so I think they are staying unless Q goes pro. Primo has huge upside still and will probably break out this season. Primo stays. Of the returning starters, who does that leave as odd man out? Shack. Maybe he’s homesick, maybe he just sees his minutes shrinking, maybe he feels he’s been recruited over. But for whatever reason, maybe he’s the one leaving. To me, he’s a guy that probably has a reason to look around, whatever it might be. The other possibility is Q doing more than testing the NBA waters.
We didn’t give little Q a scholarship did we? Otherwise it’s too obvious who joins Rojas in the portal.

You think our leading scorer who has started like 50 games the last two years is going to transfer? Seriously?

Shack led the team in scoring and shots taken and probably will next year too, on a team that should be in the top 10, not sure why he would transfer
Shacks dad loves Nate Oats too, he has referred to himself and Nate on twitter as brothers before.
