A road series sweep by Friday has a rice ring to it.

But I do love me some banana ball. Glad the coverage switched to it post Bama game.

SEC stats we are 15 in hitting
Dead last in fielding
6 in pitching. Thank goodness for good pitching from the starters. The BP is a hodgepodge of sorts with only a few with decent ERA's who have pitched enough to be counted. Banks pitched last night for the first time in 2 weeks.

I remember a push back in the 90s I believe for wooden bats when every game seemed to be 24-19 and such. But it was said that there was a shortage of wood. And I don’t think they were referring to Ash. Maybe someone will have a better memory.

You are correct. The push was in the aughts, and was a pushback against 1990's "Gorilla ball" that consisted of homerun derbies. The result was a composite bat that plays much more like wood.

The old aluminium bats were like hitting with a tennis racket. The ball jumped off at dangerous speeds. Also, the metals would warp in unique ways on impact, which could make miss-hit balls travel more like a squared-up ball. Warning track balls today would be clearly out of the park then.

The BBCOR bat is played in college and below due to costs. Wooden bats break, causing a financial strain on already tight baseball budgets. "Amateur" baseball also is more likely to reuse baseballs for cost savings. Pro ball will throw away pearls like pennies. Every dirt-ball pitch warrants a fresh ball from the ump's bag, and they go through tens of thousands of balls a year. College and below don't have those budgets.

If you have 20 minutes to kill this is a fun watch on the evolution of college bats.

Rob Vaughn says Justin Osterhouse is doubtful, and that his injury was something "more than a cramp" in Friday's game:

"I didn't know if he slipped, I didn't know what happened, I thought maybe he was cramping, but that he was just stretching like he always does, and just something in his lower half, I don't know if it's hamstring, hip, I'll get a better read from Stryker after this."

Rob Vaughn's update on Luke Vaughn, who exited after being hit in the helmet with a pitch:

"Takes 95 to the head, you want to be extremely, extremely cautious with that. So he came out, he was in good spirits, feels okay, but again, head stuff isn't stuff to mess around with. Felt like we were fine with Purdy in there. I trust him in there, in those spots, he gives some really good at-bats. So more than anything precautionary, I think we'll know a lot more tonight and tomorrow morning ."

Weird things happen. We lost our starting DH to an oblique strain last weekend on a check swing.

That was an interesting watch. I had forgotten some things in the whole travail of aluminum and composite bats. Other things, I was, frankly, ignorant about.

8-zip
Two DP ground balls to get out of the inning and we throw one into the outfield and only get one out on the second one.
