Next up on the draft preview series we have pitcher Zane Adams. Adams finished his sophomore season with a 5.54 ERA, going 7-4 in 14 starts. He was second on the team in strikeouts with 62 and wins with seven respectively. The Texas native concluded the year as the only starting pitcher to have wins against the two teams playing for the World Series LSU and Coastal Carolina. As a freshman he produced 5.37 ERA in 13 starts to go along with 47 strikeouts and opponents only posting a .266 average against him. This earned him the honor of making Freshman All-SEC.

Adams, like most of the Crimson Tide pitching staff struggled mightily at times especially in conference play although he did do enough to be a potential pick in the upcoming draft. The southpaw features a fastball that sits 90-93 while topping out at 94 on the rare occasion. His secondary stuff is above average with a curveball in the high 70s with late break that generates a lot of swing and misses. Unfortunately for Adams we didn’t see as much of that this year as we expected. His changeup was a staple in his arsenal that complemented his curveball nicely. Its featured at 78-81 MPH with tremendous sink down in the zone, that created a lot of ground balls and a fair number of strikeouts.

All in all I was impressed at times by Adams throughout the season but I see him going between rounds 6-12. I think he has good upside but I think he is better served returning to school for his junior year to polish up on his control and to increase his velocity on his fastball. Next year in all likelihood you are looking at him to be the ace of the rotation with the departure of Quick. It will be a great opportunity for him to improve and have a similar surge up the draft boards to be a first round pick assuming we see an increase in production in 2026. At the same time it would not completely shock me if he ended up signing with a major league club if the slot value is to his liking. It is worth noting before the year started he was considered a day 1 pick but now all of that is off the table. The jury is still out on Adams on whether or not he returns to the Joe for his junior campaign or plays minor league baseball somewhere but I would lean to him coming back to school for another year.

Upchurch and Hines are two to keep an eye on. There is one more pitcher that may go as well

Alabama pitcher Riley Quick was chosen in the first round of the 2025 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Sunday, taken 36th overall by the Minnesota Twins.

With his selection, Quick becomes the sixth first-rounder in Alabama history. Quick now also stands as the second-consecutive first round arm produced by the Crimson Tide, joining Ben Hess, who was chosen 26th overall by the New York Yankees in 2024. The Alabama native is now the third-highest pitcher drafted in program history, Hess and Taylor Tankersley.

Well I guess our signees were not taken in rounds 1-3 yesterday. Can teams still offer whatever money they want no matter the round or do they have slotted amounts for each pick now ? They used to be able to offer a 7th rounder big money if they wanted him regardless of round picked

My understanding is there is a pool. It’s essentially a draft salary cap, so there’s a suggested amount for each pick. So you can go over that suggested amount to make your 1st rounder happy, but now you have a little less the rest of the rounds.

Yes, there is a draft pool. Every draft pick has a slot value and most will sign for right about that value. However, if “Team X” doesn’t sign their second rounder, now they have that money to try to entice other draft picks that they might have taken later.

I think as far as high school guys, you probably need to get past about round 9-10 to feel good about them coming to campus. For the guys already on the roster, MOST will sign if they are drafted at all (guys like Fay, Adams who are draft-eligible sophomores are an exception).
