Whoever draws up our contracts STILL hasn’t learned. I love what Oats is doing so far. But he has yet to coach a game in the SEC and all the risk in the first few years of that contract is on Alabama. Nate has no skin in the game. He could decide tomorrow that we can’t fire him for 3 years because it would be too expensive, prop his feet up and relax. Not likely but still...those contracts are DUMB!! And all as a knee-jerk reaction to a report that Michigan MIGHT be interested. I hope we have to fight those battles in 3 years, and I honestly think we will. But not yet. Make it $4 million a year for the first 3 years then taper it. In 3 years, we’ll be asking to up him or we’ll be ready to let him go and in year 4, it won’t hurt us to do it.
I can’t believe a law school as prestigious as Alabama’s can’t draw up a simple contract for a coach that is balanced for both sides and makes sense.

They didn’t just put the buy out in yesterday in regards to a report . That deal would have been in the works for a while now. I agree it is a big buyout but not bc of UM job opening

Why are some people complaining about a big buyout for year 1? Maybe I’m missing something but he’s not gonna get fired after a year, so it doesn’t matter

Because IF for some remote reason you needed to, you couldn’t afford to. I just don’t see any need for such a ludicrous buyout in years 1 and 2. The coach has to feel pretty secure but it also doesn’t put much of his skin in the game. I don’t anticipate this being an issue, but you never say never and it just doesn’t seem smart.

Ok so im no insider and this is hearsay from a 3rd party outside source I have that is accurate about 75% of the time.
Oats backed off of Trendon and that Watford and his dad had Wade/Penny in a bidding war that Penny got fed up with because he had better options and that if Wade didnt get suspended he would have committed long ago. The Guy also said he was told that Trendons number from LSU is 250k.
Once again this guy has an outside connection so it could be truth or it could be bullshite. I lean more towards bullshite but this is what he told me and he is usually right 75% of the time.
Maybe 1 of you can confirm.

I don’t have any specific details or inside knowledge in this situation too much, but that lines up for the most part with every that’s been speculated. Idk for sure if Watford has backed completely off of Memphis or not tho. That’s the only part of that story I’m not too sure about. The rest seems pretty spot on.

When Watford made the statement that I have only met him (Oats) one time, it certainly makes one think that something isnt right about this situation. But who knows, maybe our coaches just thought they were wasting their time on him.

The rumor has been out there for some time that Trendon was being shopped. A bidding war between Memphis and LSU wouldn’t surprise me and is exactly what the Watford camp was after. If TW is bringing $250K, what is Precious being offered?
Wade and Penny are two of the sleaziest shite bags in coaching. If the NCAA doesn’t step in and hammer both programs for what anyone with a pulse knows is going on, Bama and all others should just say frick it and join in. If the NCAA thinks they can pick and choose, I’d hit them right between the eyes with a humongous lawsuit because there is public record of at least one coach in question on tape admitting to making offers for a player. Either clean it up, or step aside for the free-for-all you encouraged.

It's EXACTLY what I've been saying and getting roasted for on here the whole time. I have never wanted this kid, because to get him would have meant Oats played the game. Bully for CNO for doing it the right way.

For anyone that says Alabama doesn’t care about basketball and there’s no support, I’d like to point out that this off-season basketball thread is approaching 200 pages and even if you combined the 2 football threads that are stickied, it still only reaches 150 pages.

Some would argue its because we have a new coach but even with Avery the basketball threads were always very active.

Yeah the basketball threads have always been pretty active. They died a little at the end of last season bc we were so miserable and just done with Avery, but we still were on here together ranting and wanting him fired
