Briarwood was down 27-10 in the mid 3rd quarter. That was a furious comeback they made. Briarwood vs St. Paul's is going to be great. The 2 private school powers going head to head

Fun fact. Last time the 2 played was in the 2007 state title game. St. Paul's led by a QB named AJ McCarron beat BCS in a thriller.

bumping them to 6A

It's temporary, and it's not really arbitrary. The base formula that put them in 5A was arbitrary, but the move to 6A is because they have decided to enhance the 1.5x formula with a competitive caveat. If you win championships, they bump you up a class temporarily.

I don't necessarily agree with it, but since private schools can basically recruit players, it's probably the right thing to do.

I'm not sure a school should be 2 classes higher than their numbers.

Bo Nix is the real deal. He missed about six weeks with a broken ankle or foot, but he's back 100%. I believe he's thrown 10 TD passes the last two games.

It seems pretty arbitrary to me. So St Paul’s won two more games than Briarwood, so let’s bump them? If they lose in the finals they don’t get bumped? They already have the multiplier for private schools. That’s enough. And I say this as someone who went to public school in Alabama.

Gary, I've known the two Adam's boys who play linebacker since they were babies. Lived in Wetumpka for several years. Pulling hard for them. Got our hands full next week

Briarwood has played in 6A so now it's St. Paul's turn

Briarwood's 2 years in 6A didn't go so well (4-7 and 5-7) so it will be interesting to see how St. Paul's does.

basically they advance a team until they fail

It's not enough if one school recruits more heavily than others. Especially since the multiplier is absolutely arbitrary.

So St Paul’s won two more games than Briarwood

That's not how it works. St. Paul's won state in 2014 and 2015, so they get bumped up. If they are not competitive at 6A, they will move back down in two years.

The bottom line is if you want to disregard private schools' ability to recruit, they either play up or move out. Your only other option is to split them away from competing with public schools like they do in Louisiana, except there just aren't that many privates in most of Alabama.

not saying they do or don't but there's zero evidence behind this

Nobody knows if they do except them. But the AHSAA tries to maintain a competitive balance since private schools have that ability and public schools don't. St. Paul's has been in the final three of the last four years. (And will probably win their third in four this year).

It's just what happens when you mix the privates and publics. I think it's better this way, even if a small number of private schools take a two year hit. The only other alternative is to make them play only private schools, and in Alabama, that's just not realistic.

Sports are split now, too, so privates that might recruit heavily in one sport can play up a class in that one and can play down in others. There's at least one school with a 5A team and 3A in all other sports for next year.

Congrats

I watched on YouTube. It was close for a half but Wetumpka had too many athletes. Y’all’s QB is quick and that fake punt was beautifully executed. Hillcrest won 10 out of the last 11 by running the ball. Wetumpka took that away and made Hillcrest one dimensional.

Good luck against Pinson Valley.

In some 6A re-organization news, Oxford went from the weakest region in Class 6A to the toughest. Next year Oxford, Clay-Chalkville, and Pinson Valley will all be in the same region.
