I thought we matched their toughness last night and that's not something we've done all year.
We sure did - and we did it every single possession. And quite frankly, anything less and we would have lost the game. We didn't give up a single extended run/cold streak.
The fact that Avery had these kids go from that Florida abortion in which we basically were left for dead (by most of us, too) to the SECT efforts and then that type of high level, high intensity, high pressure effort for 40 minutes is truly impressive. That game last night was a physical and mental WAR.
He has shown he can do things with these kids. Just gotta hope they and he keep improving.

Some other lines just as a reference:
WVU -10 vs Murray State
Wichita State -11 vs Marshall
Duke -9.5 vs Rhode Island
AU -9.5 vs Charleston
Michigan State -15 vs Bucknell
Cincinnati-13.5 vs Georgia State
Kansas -4.5 vs Seton Hall
Tennessee -6 vs Loyola
Kentucky -6 vs Buffalo
I should mention that the Vegas power ratings have Nova at #2 and us tied for #39 with Rhode Island, Davidson, and Loyola.
ETA: the ratings were produced before the first game tipped, not sure if it has changed since then or if they stick with the same rating throughout the tournament.

Look out, Auburn: when Arizona goes down it will be Feds 5, Schools Under Investigation 0. USC, UofL, Ok State not invited; Miami, UofA run.

So Nova has nobody taller than 6'9. That's a plus.

This is probably not a popular view, but I really don't mind some of the extra turnovers we had last night if it means we continue to play at a higher pace. I know some of them were just flat out stupid, but we're going to get that if we are having an extra 10-15 possessions a half.
I would much rather go down swinging with 41-45 point halves than 19 point half like we had against UK. To do that, we have to run and we have to risk some ugly turnovers.

Yeah but did you watch their game? They are fricking lethal from the 3
I'm just excited about the opportunity our guys have

The biggest issues for the team, as we all know, is that freshmen is ~70% of our productivity. It's hard to get true freshmen to really buy into a program and to have business-like mindset. Most kids that age are dumb and emotional. There is a reason why Saban doesn't play some freshmen/young players that we ALL think would start. (e.g Thompson over Hootie Jones). You can't build your roster like in football, obviously, but I do think managing the mindsets of young kids is something that Avery is learning on the fly since he hasn't had any experience coaching CBB prior.
However, this doesn't bail Avery out. I think there were many times this season where Avery didn't make the necessary adjustments or employed the right in-game tactics. This is my biggest concern for Avery moving forward. It's the difference between Coach Cal (the best coach in our league) and Avery.
I thought he coached his best game of the season last night. After Blackshear went out, he brought Galin AND Donta in. I bet we see that more next year, as well.
I've also wonder about the locker room leadership of this team. The strongest personalities are Freshmen. I'd argue that it seems like Collin maybe the strongest leader but that's just because of the emotion shown on court. I don't think we've had a locker room presence to help manage these strong personalities. I really hope Donta can become leader next year.

Villanova is very well coached team and is one of the highest, if not the highest, ranked teams in offensive efficiency. We'll have to play much better defense than we did last night to have a chance.

Nova hasn't played a noon game since early Feb. The one other afternoon game they played since (Creighton), they lost.

I'm glad the game is early. There's a better chance the crowd will be dead and that the higher seed will be flat.

You always hear Avery telling folks to shoot it. We truly have nothing to hold back in the next game. It'll be interesting.

So we are pulling for CS-Fullerton here in a second. We want to stay away from Purdue in the Elite 8 game. A rematch with Arkansas will work.

The more I’ve thought about it, the more I agree.
Nova is more accustomed to the big stage and bright lights of a prime time NCAAT atmosphere. I have no doubt we will come into the game 100% ready to make a statement.
Whether we are able to is a different story, but with the early tip and our lackluster basketball reputation, it’s at least conceivable that Villanova doesn’t really view us as a legitimate threat and comes into the game going through the motions a bit.
Another thing that gives us some hope - in the past decade they’ve been to two FF’s (one championship), but in the other years they’ve lost in the second round 4 different times.
Obviously this is a different team, a veteran team, and Jalen Brunson is a phenomenal player, but as good as they are, they aren’t invincible. I think we have the talent to play with them for a full game, but it will boil down to execution as to whether or not we do.
Also, Sexton is probably salivating at the opportunity to play opposite of Brunson. He absolutely has to keep himself in check though. There were portions of the game last night when he got frustrated and out of control. It was mostly in the first half, but at times he was hurting us more than helping us. I think at one time he had 5 points and 5 turnovers.

My mind is right! I feel that 'Nova can be beat and that we have the talent to do it.

Galin Smith has an offensive rating of 178 last night. Donta Hall had an offensive of 201 last night.
I'd point out that it was on 8% & 12% possession% though. Typically that would suggest their teammates put them in advantageous matchups/situations

I am going to say Donta and the post game
While I agree that Donta (Key as a secondary) will probably be the key to winning this game, it will be his defense that will make or break Bama.
Nova is the #2 2FG% offense in the country. The way they've achieved that is their absurd ability to space the floor with shooters. All 5 Villanova starters are ~39+% 3FG shooters and have hit 50+ 3FG.
This will put a ton of pressure on Donta Hall + Braxton Key to not only be able to defend the perimeter shooter but provide rim protection

Sometimes I wonder if you’re a bot that is programmed to statistically swat us down like flies when we find something to be positive about.

The toughness aspect is where these guys grew up last night because tech brings the effort for 40 mins. It should go a long way in the future , and I agree that we need that alpha locker room leader next year. I ve seen Avery grow this past 2 weeks and I agree he's learning what works in the college game

What was the point of even saying this? They took advantage of the in-game situation and played really well.
Hey everybody! Let’s not celebrate that they played well because Gene says it’s not that big of a deal!
