Here are several tidbits from Alabama's 11th spring practice:

- Defensive lineman A'Shawn Robinson (knee, ankle) was wearing a black, no-contact jersey, as well as a knee brace and a walking boot on his right leg/foot. He did not participate in any individual drills and was riding a stationary bike during the second half of the one media viewing period on Friday afternoon.

- Early enrollee safety Deionte Thompson was running routes and catching passes with the wide receivers during the one viewing period. He still wore No. 14, although it was white and not the defense's crimson. Head coach Nick Saban labeled this move as an experiment in his Wednesday press conference.

- Thompson was in the back of one of two wide receiver lines Friday. The line he occupied was headed by Robert Foster, with Derek Kief and Parker Barrineau behind him and in front of Thompson.

- Quarterback Cooper Bateman wore a black, no-contact jersey as was throwing passes at his original position for the first time in several practice sessions. Reporters did not see Bateman run a route or catch a pass in the one media viewing period.

- Reuben Foster lined up as the Mike linebacker, alongside Reggie Ragland, during individual drills Friday.

- What appeared to be the first-team offensive line was the same group the media has seen in recent weeks this spring. Cameron Robinson was at left tackle, Ross Pierschbacher was at left guard, Ryan Kelly was at center, Bradley Bozeman was at right guard and Dominick Jackson was at right tackle.

- Cornerback Cyrus Jones (hip) and outside linebacker Denzel Devall (foot) did not participate in any individual drills during the one media viewing period. Both players again wore black, no-contact jerseys and worked with strength and conditioning coach Scott Cochran on the sideline. Devall wore a boot on his left foot.

*** What's next: Alabama will hold its second spring scrimmage tomorrow afternoon.

Oh dear God, please let Thompson stay at Safety.

I hate these experiments. Glad Bateman back at QB.

I understand the need for them sometimes, but I can't recall a successful transition after "experimenting" in camp.

Thank you. Someone who finally feels the way I feel. I think it completely ruined Burton Scott. Just me though.

I like the experiment of putting Johnny Dwight at FB. Dakota Ball might be successful over there too. The idea of a jumbo fullback clearing the way for our RBs is intriguing.

Coker vs Cornwell seems to be the biggest battle on offense.

Dakota ball played in every game last year at te, plus he dropped 40lbs to play that position, so its likely permanent

Not that relevant, but I wonder who has a stronger arm? Probably two of the strongest in CFB.

I think they were just surprised at how quickly Harrison has caught on and they're trying to give Thompson a chance at WR. I think he'll stay at Safety. He'd be a monster on ST, but maybe he redshirts this year, plays in Dime in 2016, starts next to Ronnie in 2017 if Hootie goes pro after 2016.

Not sure when they switched but,

Michael Williams was a DE
Zeke Knight was a WR
Cyrus Jones was a WR

I wouldn't call those experiments.

Zeke Knight and Jimmy Johns were both offensive players under Shula. ZK a WR and JJ a RB. Both switched to Linebacker when Saban became coach. Unfortunately we never saw either of them play the position. Zeke for health reasons and Jimmy was booted off the team for his blow situation.

Zeke played an entire season at the Jack, 2007. He's arguably been the most complete Jack under Saban, as he could rush the passer and actually defend the pass.

I want to see Rashaan Evans get on the field so bad. it sounds like the only thing that's keeping him from really breaking through is the playbook. he is getting a lot of good reps this spring so hopefully it will help it click for him.
quote:

Now, the only obstacle in Evans’ path to a stellar season is his ability to absorb the team’s playbook, according to rising senior linebacker Reggie Ragland, who has spent a few periods practicing with the outside linebackers.

“The thing is he’s got to keep learning that playbook and just keep growing and maturing as the weeks and days and years go by,” Ragland said after a practice earlier this spring. “If he keeps maturing, like Shawne Merriman says, he’s a freak. He’s a freak of nature, for real."

Sounds to me like the Auburn HS defensive coaches don't teach much beyond see-ball-hit-ball

Yep. Foster and Evans are prototype LBs, but have struggled with the playbook so far.

When you look at pics or videos you know how the RBs take two balls everywhere they go. Have you guys ever seen Kenyan Drake actually hold the balls in the right position when they aren't doing the drills?

He holds it like a WR. Which is why he's had fumble issues.
