College Football Playoff leaders have unanimously approved straight seeding for this upcoming season's College Football Playoff. Per ESPN:

The 12-team College Football Playoff will move to a straight seeding model this fall, rewarding the selection committee's top four teams with the top four seeds and a first-round bye, the CFP announced Thursday.

The 10 FBS commissioners and Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua, who comprise the CFP's management committee, reached the unanimous agreement necessary to make the change during a call on Thursday afternoon.

This past season, the four highest-ranked conference champions earned the top four seeds -- regardless of where they were ranked. Now, independent Notre Dame is eligible to earn a first-round bye if the Irish are ranked in the top four. All four teams that earned a first-round bye in the inaugural 12-team CFP lost their first game.

The five highest-ranked conference champions will still be guaranteed spots in the 12-team field.

"After evaluating the first year of the 12-team Playoff, the CFP management committee felt it was in the best interest of the game to make this adjustment," Rich Clark, executive director of the College Football Playoff, said in a statement. "This change will continue to allow guaranteed access to the Playoff by rewarding teams for winning their conference championship, but it will also allow us to construct a postseason bracket that recognizes the best performance on the field during the entire regular season."

12 teams is 8 teams too many.

This was a good decision. I still think 12 teams is too many. 8 would be better and I’d take a 6 team playoff with the two highest ranked teams getting a bye.

Do some of you think it’s inevitable they move to a 16 team playoff years from now? It may be a decade or two until it’s done but if there’s a way for them to make more $, they’ll do it in a heartbeat.

That would be awful. Talk about kill your regular season. No, I’m not a boomer but I hate that with a 12 team playoff some top teams can have the mindset of we’ll get at least 1, possibly 2 mulligans and still make it if you’re a top school in a power conference. I think a 4-6 team playoff still makes the most sense to me.

Why do people like you keep believing that lie. Why would you want a system where you lose a game or two early your season is over. The playoff is expanding and there ain’t nothing you can do about it you old frick

Good. Now do away with conference champs getting auto bids (which is gaining strength) Arizona st would have won 4 games playing in the SEC.

There should not be a first round bye, all teams should play.

If that was true then why did BK leave Notre Dame to play in much tougher conference and hurt his chance to win a championship at LSU?

Because LSU didn't put restrictions on who he could recruit and he wanted to win. Notre Dame had a great season this year and I'm not disputing that. But seasons like last year are few and far between for ND. The last time ND was a contender, BK was coach and Te'o was thier star player. LSU is a contender every year as long as they can retain Louisiana talent. ND has to go out of state to get talent and athletes have to meet certain criteria that LSU doesn't require.

Still embarrassing that they couldn't have figured this out before seeing a full year of the playoff play out. Not a difficult concept to comprehend.
