This week, the Louisiana Supreme Court ruled that Kelly Orgeron, the wife of former LSU coach Ed Orgeron, deserves $8.13 million from the buyout he received from LSU. Per NOLA.com:

The Louisiana Supreme Court handed down a ruling Friday that said Ed Orgeron's ex-wife, Kelly Orgeron, is entitled to half the money that the coach received from his LSU buyout, awarding her $8.13 million.

The state's high court pointed to language in Ed Orgeron's term sheet with LSU that said it was a legally binding contract when he signed it Jan. 14, 2020, at the time he and his wife were still married. Orgeron filed for divorce 43 days after signing the deal. That contract included provisions for the coach's buyout if he was fired without cause, which happened the next year in 2021.
quote:

“The issue in this case is uncomplicated,” McCallum wrote in an 11-page dissent. “All of the sums Mr. Orgeron received post-community — whether in the form of salary, supplemental salary, incentive compensation or liquidated damages … were received by Mr. Orgeron for work he performed after the termination of the community property regime. It is all his separate property.”

Ed Orgeron signed a contract extension with LSU shortly after winning the College Football National Champion in 2020, which raised his salary to roughly $7 million annually. Orgeron signed the extension the month before he filed for divorce, but the LSU board of supervisors did not approve it until the divorce proceedings were underway.

That contract extension paved the way for Orgeron's $17 million buyout when LSU fired him in 2021.

$17 million. Uncle Sam wants half. That leaves $8.5 million. Miscellaneous spending $2 million. That leaves $6.5 million. Wife is owed $8 million. That leaves -$1.5 million. Judicial interest may be $500k. That leaves -$2 million. Ouch!

I’m happy for her simply because O used what Nick Saban & Les Miles had built over two decades & won a NC & subsequently by his own hands destroyed a top tier program in less than 2 years. We criticize BK now but what he had to do to rebuild LSU football is remarkable. So f’n give her the money.

All can be fixed. Jon Sumrall will leave Tulane after this season. The Wave can pay Coach O $5M per season to beat up on the AAC. Win. Win.

They should not give one cent to someone who had nothing to do with earning it. He would have been as successful if he was sleeping in a super 8 as a Batchelor the year they won. She did not do anything to deserve 8 million dollars of money made from coaching. The idea a spouse gets half of what one party does on the job is just dumb unless they are running a business together.

Another dumb take. In a vacuum what you say sounds good, but to think she wasn't a vital part in the family dynamic is far-sighted.

How shitty it must be to not only get this money took from you but to know, down deep in your heart, that the girl he is with wouldn’t acknowledge his existence if not for said money.

Did he continue to work for LSU after the divorce was filed? If so, I would agree with the dissent. The buyout wasn't for work he performed while married.

Have no idea if this is true but the story around Covington Mandeville is when he was in L.A. with USC she was seeing someone. When he came back she said she would get rid of the dude. She did not. Like I said I have no idea if this is true. But I have family in Covington Mandeville/Beau Chen CC.
