Kendall Rogers of D1 Baseball recently wrote about the "New College Baseball Model" that has been discussed by many coaches over the last couple of months.

The proposal would move the start of the college baseball season to mid-late March and the College World Series into mid-July.
quote:

A College World Series in mid-July. An NCAA tournament beginning in early July. A college baseball season beginning the third weekend of March.

Those are all things that will happen beginning with the 2022 season if a set of recommendations assembled by a five-coach panel of Power Five coaches gets approval from other Division I coaches and passes at the highest levels of the NCAA in the coming months. The panel who put together the proposed “New Baseball Model” includes Michigan head coach Erik Bakich as the headliner and a host of other Power Five head coaches. There also have been Zoom discussions with plenty of other coaches, including Big Ten coaches, Virginia’s Brian O’Connor, Ole Miss’ Mike Bianco, Cal Poly’s Larry Lee, East Carolina’s Cliff Godwin, Oklahoma State’s Josh Holliday, UC Irvine’s Ben Orloff and Sacramento State’s Reggie Christiansen. The group also has included world-renowned orthopedic surgeon, Dr. James Andrews, on some of their calls. Read more.

My issue with this is the draft would now be happening in the middle of the season. It's always been an issue having a draft going on while college players are still playing, but at least it was in the home stretch where there weren't many games left to play and there is a championship on the line. I just wonder about how focused drafted players will be for half a season, knowing they are property of a professional organization. Unless they just don't sign. I don't know, maybe it wouldn't affect them at all. But it seems like it would be a prolonged distraction.

Horrible idea. Omaha in mid July would be miserable.

I’d suck it up if my team was there

Love the idea. It may give D1 baseball more exposure. Finished up March Madness move into college baseball and then a CWS in July when you really have zero sport options.

sure would be asking the players a lot to play 2 months into their summer break.

most, if not all, do that anyway with summer leagues.

Great idea. We’ll have sports in July and helps with the overlapping of baseball and basketball in February and March.

The universities in the Midwest, North and Northeast are at a pronounced disadvantage. The South,Southwest and Western universities huge advantage. Why do you think MLB has spring ball in Florida and Arizona. This helps level the playing field somewhat.

Mixed feelings on this. I've always thought starting baseball in mid-February was a little early but a CWS in mid July would be terrible. It would be nice to only have 6 weeks between baseball and football, though.

So players are going to be asked to play a much longer cycle for those 11.7's?? Plus I wouldn't see it changing LSU's revenue much at all. How about the additional coach programs have been trying to add for years? Not going to mention the other thing that gets most other sports' panties in a wad. I'd like to see college baseball grow and improve, yet other areas beyond what this proposal outlines that need addressing.
