AP Voter Who Had Alabama At #3 Explains Why He Voted That Way To Paul Finebaum
Shanna Lockwood-USA TODAY Sports
All AP Poll voters had Alabama as the #1 team in the country, except one. That one voter was radio host Soren Petro of Kansas City. His rankings looked like this...
quote:

#1 Clemson, #2 Georgia, #3 Alabama
On Monday, he was on the “The Paul Finebaum Show” to explain why he voted that way...
quote:

“It really goes back to before the season of why I didn’t have Alabama No. 1 to start,” Petro explained. “Because of all the losses on the defensive side of the ball, and it’s also question marks at the quarterback spot. We saw one great half of football from Tua in the championship game, but can he do it game in and game out?

“I liked what Georgia had and depth Clemson had on the defensive line and the schedule Clemson had. Clemson, Georgia and Alabama one, two, three coming into the season. Once the season starts, I’m not just one to run and hide from what I originally put out there. …

“Clemson is going to have to stumble and take a fall before I just wipe them off the map. … And Alabama is going to have to beat somebody of consequence. …

“Until one of them stumbles and until one of them goes out and beats a big-time opponent, to me, I’m not going to penalize Clemson for showing up and doing what they’re supposed to do. I’m not going to penalize Georgia for showing up and doing what they’re supposed to do.”

No problem ranking Clemson #1...but his reasoning is dumb.

I don’t agree with this guy. But I also suspect the Finebomb barely watches the games and never references players asside from quarterbacks and headliners. In short, he’s not knowledgeable about the game in my estimation. He’s not a student of the game. He’s basically a bad comedian who came up with an unorthodox, mildly amusing sports themed shtick.

I hate Bama but they are the reigning champs and clearly number 1. Hate to have said that. Excuse me while I wash out my wife with gasoline and get a match.

If they are number 1 then they need to actually play ranked teams. They by far have an easy schedule!

I agree with his logic- I think he’s wrong but at least he has a clue of how he’ll arrive at his conclusion

Vegas would put Bama as a double digit favorite against either of those teams right now.

Sound logic. Why would he not keep his preseason #1 and #2, who both have won all their ganes?

Tua lit the Aggies up, if it weren't for the ACC officials making a bad call at the goalline Clemson loses at College Station. But this guy must not have watched.

By his logic, LSU should be in his top 3... we have beat 2 somebodies of consequence. Hell, we have even shown up and done things we were NOT supposed to do... I've just talked myself into believing LSU should be #1... by his logic.

For the record: I do not believe we should be #1. I do not believe Miami will go down as an impressive win when it is all said and done, but it looks good right now, so I'll geaux with it.

Miami will have a 9-10 win season. Makes our win seem more quality.

Polls don't matter anymore. The only "poll" that matters is the playoff committee's final ranking.

He should have said that he thought that Alabama was a little short on coaching.

This is the problem with preseason rankings. They stand by their original rankings and don't actually watch the games and then adjust. His reason for ranking them 3rd preseason is solid, but not to move them after watching the games is ridiculous. This attitude is what makes LSU's rise to #5 so amazing.

LSU fan's take on this ... should I upvote? He's right you know ... should I downvote? Backhanded insult to LSU's amazing ride to #5 and all. Hmm.

This Alabama team is one of the better college football teams I have seen in a long while. Any questions marks surounding this team should be minimal by now.

So was 2003 Oklahoma and 2005 USC. 2001 MiamiU is the reigning modern King until someone plays a full season with the same results

Clemson and Bama have played a common opponent already. Granted Clemson was on the road and Bama was at home. But Clemson struggled mightily, Bama did not.
